I did tell someone the age, spread, and points of the buck.

I don't see where age, points or spread can have anything to do with this.  Even the biggest of bucks can make small rubs like this.  They don't necessarily rub only the bigger trees.   And with that, how can you age a deer out unless you see it's jawbone.  It would have to be pure speculation right?

Pulling the jawbone is also speculation especially between 2.5 and 3.5 year olds.  Technically, the only true way is to send the teeth away for DNA analysis and that can get the birth of the deer down to the month and year.

..and perhaps I did send it away ??  Throwing in an extra $20, gets the job done very quickly.

Besides, this is for fun with no one losing a thing.  Lighten up Francis.

Due to the number of participants versus the number of possible answers, probably best for me to give it to the closest guy, or we could be here all day.    It was a 1.5 year old spike, with a 5 inch spread.   You da man drake.

I was a a bit surprised when I walked over to see that.  He hit it for about 5 minutes and smelled it for another 5.  The tree slanted over, he pushed to the ground a couple times.  The deer went for tree to tree rubbing.  He didn't rub them all at once.  It was a small deer.  I text my buddy and had him tip the can a few times.  The spike looked, ears perked up a few times, but he didn't head that way.

If I was to come upon this rub, I wouldn't have thought it was a spike.  The height of the rub gives it away that it's a young deer.  I should have taken pics ground level to give you guys a better idea of the height, but it wasn't in my plan at the time to play a guessing game with it.  I probably would have guessed a wider buck, with more points, although points don't really matter.

i thought due to the closest one in the picture going almost to the ground that would be a drop tine. That would be the only way a big deer would rub that would to be all at one time. They like resistance.

I also assumed the others were rubbed by browtines.

Spike hunter.

I figured a pretty narrow spread becuase the sapling to the right does not have any scratches that I can see.

Nice Stripes quote.  Not trying to rain on your parade.

You didn't say you harvested this animal in your original post, only got video and watched him.  So I can see where you know the approximate spread (not exact) and could have counted the number of points, but the age would just be a guess on your part would it not?   but yet you want people to guess an age within 1/2 a year to win something.

I must be missing something but I'll watch this play out.  Go for it.

EDIT:  Judging by how low to the ground this is, it is not a very old deer.

The spread and age are guessimations CF.  But, it's not likely you're going to catch me getting a deer's age from my area wrong from 1.5 - 4.5, especially if I have a chance to observe it.  Deer are very easy to age on foot, if your familiar with the herd, ace structure, and their ecosystem.

I did not ask anyone to guess the age within a 1/2 year.  I said all deer at this time of year are a 1/2 year and something so make your guesses including a 1/2 year such as 2.5.. etc.

I don't want the coal, just give me the $ equivalent.   All kidding aside, I started a couple guys bowhunting this year, and will give the true talker to one of them. I have a couple already. There's no better grunt call on the market. I called last years buck, and this years buck in with one. If you want to try and make it out steelheading in the next month or 2, just give me the true talker then.

I figured 1.5 years because the rub looked so close to the ground. I picked spike because the trees didn't look very tore up.

I could get you a "can" if you'd like.

I'm likely heading to Erie next Friday/Saturday if you're interested.  May end up in another state however.

telling the difference between a 2.5 and 3.5 year old deer by the jaw is fairly simple by looking at the dentine line on 1st molar.  Beyond that is difficult because of variation in diet
