strting jig fishing, question on size & color?
I'm no stranger to steelhead fishing but its bin mainly spoons and bait. But i got schooled one night at the the mouth of elk creek by some mini foo fisherman. I know the basic rig for fishing them I just have a question on what weight and what color are hot. If you bin around enough your know that some of them old timers are pretty tight lipped?

1/32nd and 1/64th mostly. Any color will work, I stay away from orange, pink, and chartruese. Everyone throws that junk at them be it jigs or egg flies. I think they get tired of seeing it.

Look fantastic! Hopefully you have better luck with "pretty" stuff than I do.

Lookin good. I just started tying my own yesterday as well. I've heard black, and white work very well. I made some that look like Steeler colors too. I was also told to use some tinsel, or flash in them. I'm going to test out just about every different color and color combination that I can until I get a couple of them that work well.

Looks good, I tie my own too. Black bucktail or maribou with an orange head 1/32 or 1/64 and flash seem to do pretty well. As far as the guy schooling you thing. I have had it done to me just the opposite. Sometimes your the windshield and sometimes your the bug

Don't be scared to use your new skills on larger jigs for other species as well. One of my favorite flies is a Clouser/Deceiver hybrid, which has more "alive" characteristics than just about any lure that I have ever used. There's not a law against tying it onto a jig head... I'm sure if you made smaller versions, there would be a few steelies out there that would take a close look with their mouths. Just about any time I fish, the first hour or two is with something that I have made.
