spinning reel question

in my arsenal of spinning reels, i came across a new shimano sedona rear drag.  i cannot remember when or why i bought it.  my other reels are front drag.  anyone use rear drags?  is there any benefits?  really don't see that many on the water.

Rap, I'll resist the urge to blame it on a politician, lol. Actually, I prefer a rear drag on my spinning reels. You can adjust the drag without getting close to the line, and they usually have "click" adjustments that make it easier to make small adjustments while you're fighting a fish. Just a personal preference thing, not sure that there's a real advantage either way.

thanks bull.  may have to strap it on a rod and give it a try.  not as pretty as some of my other reels, but it sounds solid. (just like obama.........whoops ).........

I have a sedona 2500, sahara 4000, and a stella 1000.  They get smoother as you go up in price, but all are good solid reels in their price range.

    Thanks

rick, i have symetres and saharas and like them as much as my quantums, but i was surprised to read that sedonas are shimanos best selling reels.

One other advantage is that you can usually change spools faster and easier as well. So you can flip flop on your line choice, just like..... oh never mind, lol.

best selling means best received product for the price, not necessarily the best reel or the cheapest price.

I think that is the reel that the package in most of their packaged setups.  That helps with sales figures.

definately.  they sell for about 50 bucks, which puts them into a lot more hands.  i remember when there were not many choices in spinning reels beyond mitchell and heddon.  shimano has more lines now than all combined in the 60s.

    Rich,

A rear drag reel tends to have smaller diameter drag discs/washers. This can sacrifice durability/reliability, and have seemed to have greater start-up friction IMO. For SOME reason though, front drag reels seem to loosen, or tighten up on their own for me, so I prefer rear drags. Might be me, or something inherent in the systems, I don't know. I have also found front drags more sucseptible to attracting dirt/grit while fishing.

I do know that reels with a reputation for their superior drags, tend to be front drag systems.

That said, the Sedona is a great reel. Enjoy it.

My front drag reels seem to preform poorly in bad wether,(cold & rain) not so much just cold....
I do like my rear drag reels when i fish for carp at pay lakes , it allows me to make ajustments according to the size of the fish i am fighting.....

in bad weather use a rear drag the water seeps out the lower and has a less chance of freezing up front drags use larger disc and are better for larger fish i still use a rear drag ,and no bigger than 8to 10 lb on it unless going for salmon on the same reel

wow, all the years that i bought spinning reels, i stayed away from rear drags thinking front drags were superior.  although i am down to about a dozen reels, only one has a rear drag.  wish i would have talked to you guys earlier.

I've only owned rear drag spinning reels. They work especially well when throwing spoons for steelhead off the mouths, you can keep the drag set hard to set the hook when they hit then adjust when they run without getting your hand near the line as you would if it were a front drag reel...

Personal preference depending on what type of fish you target. I prefer front drag reels just because I had bad experiences losing fish from the rear drags being too sensitive on the amount of clicks you need to have it set just right.

Could have been they were a cheaper reel, though.

I had a few rear drag models in the past, but never cared for them.  My front drags always seemed to operate smoother.

The larger diameter of front drag discs, allow the friction to be spread over a greater surface area under less pressure. Thus operating smoother.

I agree, you don't have to reach up around to fix the drag, its a nice feature.
