Doe anybody still do this?

Rabbit and Pheasant hunting?  I'm not talking about hardcore guys with trained dogs, I mean just a couple of guys (or even only one) wearing canvas and bulldozing through ditches and culverts jumpshooting them?  Hell, I dont even see "small game" coats or pants for sale anymore.  I did that a lot when I was young, but with the loss of game and habitat and the rise of archery hunting, I got away from it.  Anyone still do that?

    Nope.

I have been thinking of taking my 7 year old daughter squirrel hunting in the next couple weeks. She is going to lose interest fast I'm thinking but I want her to experience what I did when I when my dad took me hunting. If she sits still enough for 20 minutes or so, I think I'll be able to get one and see the smile on her face.

Dane, I do it every year, by myself. I hunt rabbits until I can't give anymore away(I don't eat them). Lots of rabbits, no hunters willing to walk. LAZY!  I invite guys all the time, when I say I hunt WITHOUT a dog they all say NO WAY. All the cuts and scratches I get while hunting heal with time. The memories last forever!!!

    DanesDad,
I still do it every chance I get. I hunt with a buddy and we take turns being "the beagle". I've got a canvass coat and brush pants. I trudge through every briar patch and ditch I can find. That's how i hunted as a kid with my dad, that's how i hunt today. I kill less game then the guys with the dogs probably, pretty rewarding to flush my own game though. And yes.....the canvass is getting VERY hard to find, well worth the search though!

I don't always snag fish, but when I do...

I guess i fit into hard core bird hunter. Although, i didnt pay anyone to train my dog.

Yeah, I remember I used to have scratches all over my hands, wrists, and lower arms.  I used to look like I tried to put a cat in a washing machine.  But, I loved that stuff.

Yeah, I'd have to find some before I tried "pushing the bush" again.  Well, that and a place to hunt.

We do it all the time here in SWPA. Since I didn't make it to Erie yet, that is all I have been doing. I love squirrel hunting the most but pheasant and grouse is always a great time.

I have the same problem with the long archery season I just don't have time to get out kickin brush and tearing up my Carharts with multi flora rose bushes! I will take my son kicking brush when he gets older for sure. (He's only 8 months old) My daughters don't want to hunt and I'm sure they wouldn't want to get all scratched up anyhow walking through the brush. I hunted for small game without dogs from the age of 12 until I was around 21 and enjoyed every step I took, every pile I kicked and every bush that wiggled under my foot when I stepped on a bunny! I never really had any luck with pheasants until I bought them and had my dog flush them for me. I used to hunt the second season and that kind of faded away with ice fishing and the shows i do with my Company through the winter.

My friend was getting into it. He used a lot of advice from the internet, plus talking to taxidermist, watching the taxidermist shows on TV. He did good. Good luck!

i love small game hunting, i got a beagle, molly, shes great, never wants to stop!  Never had a bird dog, but molly will chase pheasants, so i guess i dont need one, not a whle lotta grouses around.  Biggest problem is the rabbits hole up fast, and dont seem to be out much during daylight hours(at least where I hunt) thanksgiving morning tradition!

I never hunted or ate squirrels, but I'm seriously considering it.  A lot of my deer stands are polluted with them.  In fact, a lot of my deer stands are populated ONLY by squirrels.

Another reason the rabbits either hole up quick or spend a lot of the day in holes is that they are chased by more than just people. There are a lot more fox, owls, cats, hawks and coyotes than there ever was 30/40 years ago. They fight for their lives daily. I see a lot of ferrel cats and they are as bad if not worse than any natural predator.

a buddy of mine when i was just starting hunting, his grandmother, made spagetti and used the rabbit and squirrel meat in place of the meat balls. From what i remember it was good. Seems like an easy recipe to do, just season the meat a little and toss it in with your favorite spagetti. When I get some (havent in a while) I usually just season and fry em with butter and onion.
