float line

i was wonderin if i have to much float line on my reel? every time i've hooked up my reel won't reel in and i have to strip line off to be able to fight fish. how long of a float do you need when fishing the erie tribs? about 30 feet more or less any replies woukd help immensly. will see some of you guys in two weeks.
