How fast are the leaves falling?

Just wondering, how many leaves are floating down the creeks
and how long it takes for them to clear?

They are starting, but with this low pressure moving in, the wind we should see should take care of most of them. Leaf season is here, but it won't last long with the strong winds. It should be okay by next weekend.

The frost was not that bad closer to the lake and without some good rains it could keep the leaves here for a couple weeks. I noticed a differance from North East all the way to Meadville. At home there were still some trees just starting to change color, some had lost all there leaves. In Meadville, mostly all have changed and have less leaves then home.

    32 fps^2 less wind resistance.

On a less sarcastic note, however, how does everyone deal with fishing around the leaves?

My friend and I counted 731,952 leaves floating down Elk creek. The breakdown is as follows-
    152,112 yellow
    222,547 green
    357,293 red
In the stretch that we counted, the flow was avearging 200 ft per minute(rather slow) but my buddy is not a fast counter. The pool was 400 feet long so it took about 2 minutes for the leaves to clear the pool. Taking also into account that some leaves were falling, we installed video to be reviewed in order to get an accurate account of the gravitational effect on the total count. It was hard because sometimes just when we would think one was going to hit the water, the wind would blow it onto the bank and we would have to subtract from the total count. Now, when I tell you my buddy is a slow counter...wait till you see him subtract....All in all it was a pretty good study but both of us have blisters on our fingers from counting on them, especially me because I did the green and the yellow...again cause he's a slow counter. Hope this helps... Oh yeah the reason we counted leaves is because there are so many it was very difficult to fish.

You numbers guys crack me up. You know, it's not always about how many you see fall, but the total experience. I'd be glad to see the number of leaves stocked cut in half, if we could just get a little more variety, other than the same old, oak, oak, oak, maple, oak, oak, maple.  I think some redwoods would do excellent in our waters, we should start a petition to have them stocked.

Dont forget to take count in the orangish yellows and greenish yellows. Did you also calculate the types of leaves.I hear maples you can fish in and oaks you cant.

"Leave" it alone stillhead...it was'nt like we were shaking the trees. None of those leaves were foul dropped, not one. Always a critic out there. You act like we were chanting "yea, yea the witch is dead"... Do you have any idea how many orange plastic pumpkin bags we can stuff?? Its not like there are going to waste. Get off my case.

It figures you take them just to make pumpkin sacks.  We need more fall/count/release leafermen, they are to valuable to be caught only once. Leaf hog!!

    LOL!

I just can't help but love a smartazzzz

Ya'll need some extra leaf counters tomorrow

"Windy. Showers in the morning becoming widely scattered in the afternoon. High near 50F. Winds NW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of rain 50%".

Winds NW at ***20 to 30*** mph

I was going to fish tomorrow, but I guess I'm just not enough of a "diehard'  steelheader anymore...

Brookie, in case you can't read between lines, there will probably LOTS of leaves in all the criks tomorrow.
Depends on the flow is as to how fast/how long  it takes for most of them to wash out.

E=MC2 tells us that they can not fall faster than the speed of light, so I would say they are falling slower than that...

This one is for you numbers guys, The real answer to the question, how fast are the leaves falling?
     While standing stream side:
#1 count the number of leaves you see fall in 5 minutes looking strait ahead of you

#2 multiply that number by 4 because the number you count fall you see in a 90 degree range

#3 Divide that number by how many trees you can count  in 360 degrees around you

#4 multiply that number by the number of branches each tree has you counted in step 3

#5 calculate an aveage wind speed for 3 days

#6 finally divide that number by the formula of pi ( 3.14 ) and you should come up with how many days left till the last leaf will fall.

I sure hope this helps all of you. Please give me some results of your findings by Friday im interrested to know what you all come up with.

Anadromous it not that I am a slow counter.  It is that I had to make sure the leaves that I were keeping track of were of legal size and completly formed.  And if you would have explained to me which color catagory the orange and brown leaves belonged to it would have went alot smother. In case you are concerned I did release the juvenile leaves and only bagged the mature male adult leaf.

deetz, if a branch falls with a group of leaves on it will it still work into your formula?      Is leaf counting better in a east wind or a west wind?

Just laugh and enjoy being out fishing man. Personally, I try to cast right on them, kinda a little game to pass the time the boom..fish on.

Of course if your in a crowded area, just start eating them. I've picked up many-a-leaf, and eaten them right there on the stream, It clears out a hole QUICK!

we sell echo and husqvarna leaf blowers. they work wonders for clearing off yards and creek leaves!! you can get them with a back pack harness so it's easy to carry them around with you.
find a good steelhead lair that you have a hard time casting too because of the leaves? start up the new leaf blower and you got open water!!
someone standing in your side pocket casting over your line? take out the leaf blower and send his hat a 1/4 mile down stream along with his fishing lisc.
    many uses in deed!!
