A fun time with my boys.....

The wife and I decided to take my two boys over to Trout Run yesterday!
My oldest (he's 2 1/2) loved watching the steelhead jump the falls!

And my youngest (he's 1 1/2) was so excited I couldn't hold him in my arms. Man, watching the spark in their eyes made me realize how much of a great thing we have. These fish have been managed for years and the state has done an awesome job.

Too many times all I read or hear about is how bad PA is doing, and how better it could be. I dissagree! PA has done an incredible job with our fishery and I am very greatful for what they have given us!

To be able to fish on a beautiful Pennsylvania stream and see hundreds upon hundreds of GIANT fish is something special. I can't wait to see the looks on my kids' face when they hook into their first steelhead!

After we watched and cheered some fish on, we grabbed a bag out of the truck and walked the water's edge. We picked up trash (the little bit that was out there) and had a great time in the process!

So, if you saw a 32 year old guy walking around with his two kids singing the song from the Wonder Pets, you can bet that was me!

I was the guy with the huge smile, and a look of pride on his face! It was a great day with my wife and kids!!

    Very cool.

I like to see people bring the kids out.  And thank you for picking up after the ones that just don't care.

Yeah mike, even though I was about 16 the first time I went up.

    I couldn't believe the fish!

Our fishery is really something special, and I couldn't imagine a better place to live other than closer to erie!

Reading the thread title, I was expecting something entirely different.  In addition to what kind of excitement the steelhead can draw out from kids, it also amazes me what kind of kids it can draw out from grown-ups.

everyone always asked me what sport i want my son to do great in. since i love soccer and football but i told them i dont care what he chooses to do just as long as he wants to always go fishing with me.

i guess in a way that even if he doesnt play any sports and would like to fish and hunt with me id be so happy. Im not gonna force it on him tho because my luck ill force him so much he wont like it or rebel later in life like some kids do.

Although at that age, getting them into actually fishing may be hard, but that's the perfect age to get them exploring the outdoors. Let him/her flip rocks and find bugs. Pick up sticks, leaves, and even start a collection is a great start! They are so much fun!

I LOVE being a father and would give up everything in a heartbeat for these boys!

    Mike,
I've got a 2 year old daughter with another "undetermined" on the way.  Can't wait till I can experience that same pleasure of introducing them to daddy's biggest passion. (Outside of family)  Thanks for sharing and being involved with your children.

Mike, just remember the kids rule "rocks are for throwing" and "sticks are for throwing" and "anything else they can get their hands on is for throwing"  "There's a time to fish and a time to throw" At that age, that time is usually 10 minutes after they haven't caught a fish.  Don't stop them. Rock throwing is fun !!!! That is of course in the proper venue. To be young again and have that sense of wonderment. I went through that age with our kids and wish I could again. If my daughter lived closer she'd never see her kids !!!!!!!!!!!   Dave

Great thing you do Mike! Teach the young ones to fish and you will not have to worry about them getting into much trouble.

Oh, way to go mikeg... I read your post and grabbed my boys, took off for Erie, and headed straight to Trout Run. But, by the time I got there, all the trash was gone and there were dads, wives and sons everywhere.

Way to start them young! My boy is 15 now. Been steelheading on a flyrod for 5 years. It is a great thing to teach a kid. I think kids pick it up pretty quick. Better on the stream than the street.

LOL, I thought I was the only one whom also sings the Wonder Pets theme song

It is amazing how kids will quickly take to the outdoors, they just need someone to show them!

My daughter is the same age as Mike's oldest son. They were actually born only days apart. (No Mike, Blake can't ask Amelia out yet, how many times must I tell you that?)

I took my daughter fishing this summer, at 2 1/2 she already loved it and asks all the time to go again. Now, we actually didn't fish more than a half hour, but who cares? She loved being out and asked to go again, that's ALL I care about.

Wonder Pets, Wonder Pets, were on our way, to help a friend and save the day. We're not too big and not too tough but when we work together we got the right stuff.......GO WONDER PETS....... YEA.........
