Very nicely said!
Just getting out and enjoying the day is worth a trip.
Some will say this isn,t for me but if you are like me , I enjoy
the walk and talking to other guys. I,ll watch a person catching and enjoyed the show.
I,ve been on that spotlight. Been skunked alot but also brought many to hand.
It is what you want. Do you like crappie as chauncy does? (the king)
What do you expect? A feeding frenzy? Not going to happen.
The day is what it is all about.

couldn't agree with john more.  when you get on the back side of 50, have good health and a tank of gas, nothing is better than a day fishing, no matter where.  i have had as many spiritual moments on the water as i have had in church.  and have met many special people who have impacted my life.  steelhead fishing is one of these special arenas.

Anyone understand or feel the same as me???

Are you still on HADD meds from your childhood????? S

Sounds like you just ain't got the fishing bug bad enough if a steelhead don't do it for you.  I'd suggest going Tarpon fishing in Boca, but never mind.

Cold, great story. I bet it felt good to catch that guy by yourself in the middle of what Pennsylvania really defines. Really cool to have something like that happen.

I had the same thing happen to me on the 4th of July. Hot as hell and the trout fishing was bad, no surprise. Small nymphs + weight. The only decent trout I had on what around 8 and the prettiest site; the reflection of the surrounding on the lakes surface like a map, small trout rises, and by myself. excellent. Trout was hooked for about a minute and he got off but not without burning an image into my mind of the beautiful red stripe that he showed off. That's all I remeber.. an Amber to flashy red color of greatness. lol.

I am not saying I hate steelhead fishing but I guess I just got use to catching bass and perch so often without haveing to walk a stream and search for a fish to take my offerings. MAybe I am just lazy but I may have said it in the wrong way. Again, I enjoy steelhead fishing but I think I over extimated the fight they werre going to give me. Maybe it is just these 22" bi-ceps of mine! LOL

screamin, I'm still, like you, not sold on the whole deal, but even I must say that you must have hooked into a real toad, or a jack.  One of my 2 jacks fought less than trout half its size.  The mature male I landed, however wouldnt be called a poor fight by ANYONE.  Then again, having him on the end of a 5 wt. helped.  As a bass fisher as well, I'd compare it to hooking up to a FAT 20" smallie with an attitude.  The fighting style is totally different, but when it comes to fighting, Bruce Lee and Muhammad Ali were both pretty okay at it.

Like I've said several times, its nothing wrong with the fish themselves, its just the atmosphere.

like you, i do not prefer to fish in crowds of people.  it's been said several times already, but give it a couple weeks or so in erie.  comparing it to the joke it may seem like now, it is like a different world up there when the weather cools down a tad and more and more fish move in.

thinking erie in actual steelhead season is like the first day of trout, is extremely inaccurate.

Wow, thats an awesome picture.  If I can avoid crowds by fishing instead of skiing this winter...I might become a steelheader after all.  Of course, this would ruin my master plan of tying all winter so I had a huge stock by the thaw.

Hello All!

This is my second year catching steelhead. Maybe I should rephrase...second year but this is the first year I actually caught some steelies. So far, I have caught 7 and had about 10 hookups. I enjoy it but I don't get as excited as some of the folks here and while fishing. I recall many people on here saying that I would be addicted and want to go everyday. But the thing is, I do not see why as catching a steelie is fun but I thought it would be "funnier" and fight a lot more. I am not sure if I was getting my hopes up but honestly it is not all that great. Here is how I picture it...sit or standing there for 8 or so hours and only land 2 to 3 fish in that long of a period! MAybe if I was landing like 20 or so steelhead it would be much more enjoyable. Not to discuss anyone but I would honestly rather be bass or perch fishing. At least I catch a lot of fish and bass give a great fight. I hope this post does not offend anyone but honestly I enjoy steelheading but it would be much greater if it was like catching fish I just mentioned. It is honestly not all that fun just sitting there and spinning or drifting for hours and catching 2 - 3 fish. MAybe I am just in denial but honestly the fighting of a steelhead is not all that great. It would be the same thing if I sat there all day for hours on end and caught 2 -3 bass. Anyone understand or feel the same as me???

GEE, YOU MUSTA HOOKED THOSE FISH IN THE MOUTH. IF YOU WANT A REAL FIGHT HOOK THEM IN THE****LIKE A LOT OF THE THRILL SEEKERS DO WHEN THE BITE IS SLOW. THEN, CAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE YOUR HOOK, YOU CAN TIE UP THE HOLE PLAYING THE FISH, THEN WADE OUT INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE RUN TO NET IT.    GLEN

If steelhead fishing is so bad why do we see so many people up there fishing for them. It may be your idea that it is bad,but you really should just get on your own and find a pod of fish. If your only catching 2 check your drift is it natural. Another thing that takes count is what is the water like , low and clear or that peerfect green color. Different water flows and water color can make the difference. If you really want to catch them wait a day or 2 after a rain go up and get the drift.

Everytime we ride up and the weather's nice we always say, "just doesn't feel right" The last several pics tell the story. Makes me warm all over !!!!! Sometimes when the snow is falling and it's cold as a witch's you know what, I just want to scream I LOVE IT TOO MUCH !!!! And did just that on a January morning @ 5 AM @ the Best Western in Sterr back in o2 or 03. Screamed at the top of my lungs I F***ing love it in the parking lot and snuck back inside after seeing all the lights in the rooms go on. Didn't want to get thumped for interrupting someones beauty sleep. Tried to explain it to co-workers and they just don't get it. You have to feel it up close and personal to appreciate it. A light snow, no wind, day breaking, crunch of snow under foot, quiet (oh, the silence) and the sound of water flowing - must be heaven cause hell ain't this cold........Dave

Fishing is what you make it. You can just stand there all day just tossin' your line in, watching it drift, and tossin' it again, or you can make it an active pursuit. Study the water, study the fish, figure out what they want through trial and error. Right now it's kinda tough to do that with the big crowds but once the weather turns and you weed out all the fair weather fishermen you will have a much more enjoyable experience.

I don't give a crap if anybody listens to me or not.

The silence is awesome!

The only thing better than the silence is when it's broken by a screaming drag!
And nobody around to witness that first head shake, or jump!

I love the winter steelheading descriptions anadromous!  PERFECT.

Personally, I like fishing for fresh run steelhead in water temperatures that optimize their ability to fight.  Pound for pound, under those conditions using appropriate tackle, I think a steelhead's fight compares favorably to just about any fish that swims.

And though you have to work for it, I think those conditions can still be found without another angler in sight.
