WORK AT THE GENNY GORGE ???

Last year some work was being done on the Seth Green side of the access to the gorge. Was wondering if it's been completed and access down the road is open ???  Thanks........Dave

i dont think so. im not completely sure, but the locals were doing as we did and parking in the upper lot, walking down the hill, and walking along the riverbank upstream to the dam/falls area, so i'd say no, you can't. we were hammering them on crankbaits and spoons up there man. just make sure to replace the trebles with singles...dont want a nasty fine. like i said we caught 14 and i want to say we lost just as many. also picked up a nice 12pound coho. guy beside us said it was one of the biggest coho's he'd seen. couple guys near the falls were killin' the steelies as well..

brown trt, thank you. That's what I was afraid of. Several years ago I fought a pig up and down over those rocks with a twisted line around my bail. Was a sight to see playing that fish running all over those rocks with no drag to use. Got him in only to have milt thrown all over me. Oh, the humanity !!  Thanks also for the heads up on trebles (wasn't aware) since I mostly fish skein under a float with a salmon/skein rig. I promised to show one of my friends the circus (as if the Oak and Burt aren't enough)   Dave

haha.thats awesome. yeah, the guy at the bait shop in town said trebles were illegal from the bridge up to the falls on "sinking" lures. floating lures(such as a floating crankbait) like i was using is ok. just as long as no weight is added. so spoons need a single hook and floating cranks can have trebles but if you put sinkers on the line, then you have to put single hooks on it too. at least this is what we were told, but i dont know why he would tell us wrong since we were buying stuff from him. that day the guy fishing skein caught 1 to our 14. they wanted big and flashy. it was awesome. its not that much of a circus right now either. we fished it all day friday and there were 3-5 guys beside us. thats it. everyone was real spread out and having a good time. saw one guy snagging, but he was also drunk so i didnt say anything. was afraid i'd have to call someone to come pick him up...but he was a terrible snagger and didnt hook but 1 fish, and it got off..haha...but its a good time right now...have a good one!....

Hey Zach, not asking to be spoonfed or anything but when you say cranks, what type ? My box is loaded with little rippers, deep rippers, long a bombers, and bout a million stingers, etc. and  even some alpena diamonds. Didn't think I'd have much use for them after putting the boat away this week. We'll probably fish skein tho since that's what we're used to (and good at) but it's nice to have options. And good to hear about the crowds. We're leaving weds. nite but probably won't fish the gorge till Fri. the 24th. Sooooo, that drunk is still there???? Prob the same one as 3 years ago. Best to steer clear of those kind......   Dave

haha..yeah it was a bomber BO5-A black pearl, and red/black were the colors....thats what we ended up using the entire time..my buddy was getting thme on the mid sized little cleo's too...but i mostly stuck with the cranks...the guy fishing skein did alright but like i said, he only caught a couple..we  had probably 30 hookups landing 14 of them..but then again, its fishing and it changes from day to day.....but i was just letting you know so you could have them in your arsenal...but really, i think anything big and flashy would get them as well as anyhting you mentioned there..... at least that day..reaction strikes is where its at...we didnt snag a single one either..i figured we'd snag at least one reeling them through the fish but every one we landed was inside the mouth..one i caught i actually had to get the pliers out because he inhaled the crank!...good times..

no problem man...anything to help a guy catch some fish...in the morning he was using trebles...and i was using weight on my crank...cause we didn't know we weren't allowed to use them that way...but after we found out, i took off the weight(didn't seem to make  a difference anyway) and he put on a big single(didn't seem to matter anyway)...

Not trying to cause any problems but on page 31 of the 2008 NYS Fishing Regulations Guide it states that upstream from the Driving Park Bridge to the lower falls of the Genesee River even floating lures are restricted to 1 hook point with a single hook.  Hope this helps prevent any unnecessary tickets.

    gadabout,
thanks for pointing that out cause i forgot to put it in there. yeah, when we got our license from wal-mart at like 3am when we arrived in town they were out of regs so we just had to go on word of mouth. then later on i picked one up and saw that. its in the box on the far right of the page. thanks again!

brown trt - Gadabout I'm gonna play it safe & take all the hooks off  LOL. Thanks for the updates. Hate to say it but those reg books are a knot to read. I'm sure I've seen the regs before but I seem to get caught in a fog after thumbing through. Should've in 03 - got a citation of the wrong kind for fishing 20 minutes before stated sunup. Think the man could have let us slide but hey, we wouldn't have it to laugh about now if he had. we did the "crime" and we paid the fine.  Dave

yeah taking the hooks off would be your safest bet...also, i'll agree on those regs. coming from out of state it's always hard to learn all the rules in 1 hour before daylight so we can start fishing legal...most of what i've figured out about the regs i've got from other fishermen because it's so hard to figure everything out and make everything match up from page to page...oh well...

Will be fishing the 23rd, 24th,25th, and maybe the 26th. Between the Genny, Oak,Sandy,Marsh,Catt, Canadaway,  and others we should be able to keep busy. Will try to remember to post after we return (without burning spots of course). Dave

Pappy, just got back. The gorge is right in the city of rochester. about 20 miles from the oak. Just google Seth Green Dr. on mapquest and you're there. The road is being worked on like BT said and you have to walk down the path and up the river bank to the dam. Little tricky (went down couple times got some bruises). Oh, and the Kings are there. We did good.   Dave

Those kings can get over the falls and up to the dam? Fish that powerful must fight like crazy!

never fished below the dam too far so I don't know what falls you're talking about, but the kings and steelies are up there. fished a little ways below the dam - between the bridge & dam for steel couple years ago & did well.   Dave

Dave I don't think that is manmade at Seth Green. Its got the powerhouse, which is being worked on, but that's an 80 foot natural waterfall. Anything that gets over it and up to the Court Street dam is an EXTREMELY strong fish.

Lee, below the powerhouse is what I'm talking about. Think we may be looking at things differently. I park behind the Seth Green housing and walk down the road (used to be able to walk all the way to the iron stairs till they started working on it) cut down the walking path and up the bank to the dam & fish right below the dam (fighting litter & trash all the way) Never saw so much debris on a river bank - discarded line, tons of it, hooks, you name it. Took what I could with me. Never realized the falls were natural & never got to the other side to see what's there. I'd agree, it would have to be some fish to get over that !!   Dave

Dave I am just playin. The crap on the banks and in the river are why its called ,among other things, the shopping cart river. Broke my big toe so I haven't been able to fish it this year with the road being closed. Its not an easy walk on those rocks with good wheels under you.  Color has looked to be off even when it hasn't rained in a while.

Lee, don't think I'll be makin the trip to the Genny again until the road is open. Still have bruises on my hip when my cleats wouldn't dig into solid rock (imagine that!). Luckily a tree branch across the chest stopped me from taking a swim...  The walk up the bank is for younguns, not soon to be retired oldies like me .  By the way, do you know a guy by the name of Andy that fished the Genny regularly (friend of my brothers - a CP'er) ?  Dave

I know AN Andy. Same one I don't know. If he is related to Kyle, the tackle collector, I have fished with or near him many times and had some nice chats on the bank.

Next time you see him tell him Mike (from Pittsburgh area) and his brother Dave & also Mario says hi.....my brother keeps saying he's gonna call him...lazy I guess.  Dave
