Deer Down

OK, who scored?  I'm actually making this post before I go out, so I assume nobody will see it until later in the day.  So, what was the story?  (pics are a plus, but not necessary).   If you came close, or anything else interesting happened, tell that too.

Rained here too.  I didn't expect that, but I had't actually checked the weather this morning.  Sat from 5:30 until about ten.  Didn't see anything.  I got up and walked out to an apple tree to see if it had any fruit and a button buck bedding in a nearby (like 20 yards away) field stood up from his bed and was answering natures call, when he saw me.  After a lot of stomping and snorting, he and an equally small doe bounded off.  Came home, took a nap, and went back out about 2:30.  Didn't see anything but idiots on quads.  All in all, kind of a slow day.

This morning I saw two nice bucks at daybreak, followed by 12 more i saw this morning. Only 4 of them were within shooting range but they were 2 moms and 2 little ones, and I was still waiting for Mr. Buck. My hunting buddy missed a real nice 9 pt 25 yds broadside said he his a branch..This evening my summit stand was being very, very uncooperative. Needless to say i sat on the ground between two logs. 5:30 came rolling around and 4 does were coming straight down the mountain toward me. They stopped for a few seconds staring in my direction about 60 yds but kept coming. Once again a 2 moms and 2 little ones come trotting right at me. The one little one honestly came right on the other side of the log to my side and didn't even look at me. At that time I drew back on her momma and who was 20 yds broadside and dropped her cold. This was the second deer I've shot with rage broadheads and I know why they're 40 bucks. The entry and exit were ridiculous. Plain and simple. Now I got one off my chest i can hopefully get a bruiser.

The variable wind killed me this morning. When I got into my stand, the wind was blowing right where I needed it to be. About 6:30am it starting blowing back and forth in all directions. Had a group of 3 does wind me at first light.....then another group of 3 does bust me around 7:30. Around 7:45 a 2.5 year old 7pt. I drew on him as he was coming in, and when he stopped at 20yds, I decided to let him walk. Saw a little 5pt after that. Quit about 9:30.

Went back out around 4:45pm. Had a doe run by me first thing. Couldnt get her stopped or I would have shot her. Later on a little 4 pt walked into the field I was hunting. Just before dark a 7pt (that I have on a trail cam pic) and a very nice 3.5 yo 8pt walked into the field. They sparred a little, then worked their way toward me. When the 8pt turned broadside at 25 yards, I started to draw. He must have caught the movement out of the corner of his eye, because he was gone in a flash. I totally blew it.

Regardless, it was a pretty good day.......

Saw two doe's... something spooked them. I was gonna drop the lead one, her whole head was grey. Boy she was weary.

Side note i did this and actually got permission, some of you may want to try the same.

Went to my boss and asked him if i could work an extra hour 4 days of the week then take the afternoon off. So basically i work 4- 9 hr days and then one day of my choosing, i leave at noon to go hunt. Only for archery season though. Plus i have off the last two days of the last week.

    summary
    -------------------
    4 - 9hr days
1 - 4hr day (leave at noon)(i get to choose the day each week and if the weather changes, i can change my mind)

I was shocked to get up and see what the weather had in store for me at 5am....rain that was never in the forecast.  Good thing I had washed my underclothes and let them hang under the deck to get soaked.  I made a mad scramble and threw them in the dryer for 20min because they were the only clothes I had prepared.  I went in with damp long-johns on; my scent-lok outerwear was all that was dry.

I arrived in stand at 6 already cold and damp.  I sat until 10 and did not see a deer.  The wind was swirling all over the place and the rain was falling pretty good most of the morning.  On a positive note I saw a group of gobblers that insisted on hanging around for most of the morning, it kept me entertained.

For the evening I made a spur of the moment decision to hang a stand in the corner of a heavily used brushy field.  We didn't even get the stand hung and get out of the woods until 2pm, we also jumped some does that were bedded right on the edge of the field.  Even after that I decided to come back and hunt it in the evening.  I was on stand at 4pm and within 5 minutes a nice buck was headed my way.  He eventually made it out of the thick stuff and was at 30yards and I saw he was the biggest 4 point I had ever seen.  He was about 15" wide on the inside and had 6" tines.  Another year on him and he will be a dandy.  At 6 pm a group of 6 doe came across me at about 45 yards and headed up to the thicket on top of the hill.  Within about 45min they headed back down on a b-line to my stand and the biggest of the group presented a shot at about 30 yards.  I let it fly and the arrow made its mark.  About 75 yards later she was recovered.  I never got an official weight on her but, it according to the chart with chest measurements it was in the 120-130lb range.  Now I have 5 weeks and 5 days left to find big poppa!!!  Good luck to everyone for the remainder of the season.

One more thing, this was the first deer I shot with the Rage 2-blades.  All I can say is WOW!!  You can't see it in the pic because of the terrible quality but, it left about a 4" wide gash upon entry.  There was no blood trailing this deer, it looked as if this deer had a hose pumping blood coming out of it!!

Went out this morning til about 9:30am. Saw 3 does travelling together. All three took off when they came across my footprints where I walked in. I've never had a deer bust me from my tracks, until today. I also saw a nice mature 10pt, which didn't come close.

A little scrubber 3 or 4 pt at 50 yards at 8:00am then a doe and 2 fawns at 8:50 am.  That was it.  Rain suit kept me dry thankfully.  Drizzle to moderate rain until 8:45am in northern Allegheny Co.  Didn't hunt the evening due to honey do's.  Gonna hit it tonight after work but it will be too warm, I think.

This morning hunt was one of least favorite hunts to date. To make a long story short I missed a very big 8, 35 yards hit a jaggar bush I never knew was there. I've been kickin myself in the****all morning since then. I saw a total of 7 bucks, two spikes, one six, 3 little 8's like 13, 14" inside, and the big boy. Saw at least 12 does between those. He didn't run off like he was spooked that bad he just kind of trotted away "like what was that". Hopefully he'll come back down this evening or some other morning this week he'll come up..

Well first off let me say I stupid in getting in my stand an hour before daylight. Where I as hunting it was below 30 degrees, so by the time the sun started to come up I was frozen. I didn however see two real nice bucks about 9 am. They were both heading straight toward me when all of the sudden off in the distance I heard a grunt. I thought what in gods name would be grunting at this time of the year. Well here it was my brother. These two deer walked just outside of shooting range past him and he thought what the heck. Well I didn't believe what I was seeing, but it worked. They both stopped and after a couple of more grunts they made a b-line right to him. He was able to get them right under his stand and made a very well placed shot on a really great 8 pointer.  As soon as he sends me the pics I'll get some on here. As it turns out those were the only 2 deer I saw all day. It was just great to be out in the woods again. Good luck to all.
