    3Way,

    Here is how I learned.

Scott used to be a regular on the board until he became turned off like most of the other knowlegable guys. CR500 was his screen name.

I can't imagine it being cheaper to make your own. Its not like tying flies savings atleast..

It's not cheaper unless you already have a lathe.

I am able to get up to 12 floats out of one piece of balsa for $3. The paint I get at Wal-Mart is $2.50. The varnish was about $10 for a large container. The bamboo skews are $1 at the Dollar Store.

I've only used 2 jars of paint, am still using the varnish and skewers, and have finished about 150 floats. I just spent $25 today at Gander for 14 floats.....so if you have the lathe, it can be alot cheap.

Your time is the biggest investment you will need as it takes a long time to complete the whole process.

I've found when it comes to making your own gear, it's not so much of the savings, but rather something to have fun with and be creative! I have a friend that has been doing this for years and does some pretty cool artwork on them, too!

He makes those "popping corks" the guys use on the coast for fishing live bait! It's something to do to keep you away from the nagging 'ole lady!

For my fishing reports, product reviews, stories, and other nonsense...
