I was talking with dad, he usually puts the salt out starting in Jan.  He hasn't used any trophy rock this year just all brown TM blocks and then smash them up and 1 will cover 4 stumps for a few months.

I know some guys are going to get pi$$ed with this question, but, if you do , in fact, remove the salt lick from the stumps 30 days prior, what stops the deer from using the stump as a salt lick during the season?  Seems like it would still be doing it's intended job: being a salt lick.

If a warden takes a piece of the stump or handfull of dirt from a ground lick, has it analized. and it comes back positive for minerals you are hung. I dig about 4' of dirt from all around mine in Sept and replace it with fresh dirt just to be safe. a stump would almost be guaranteed to test positive for several months after removing the salt block. On another site I have heard of wardens doing just what I stated.

I did the same as you S-10.

I never used a stump for a stand. I usually used a cement block that I could take with me when I was done. I then dug a large area around where the block was placed, and used that dirt for trapping. I would them scatter leaves over the area.

It was neat to come back a few days later to find the area totally torn up from the deer trying to find the last little remnants of salt.

More than a million trees a year die to print environmentalist publications.

Hi Kev--- my experience has been that after early August these licks really aren't that effective for hunting over even if you wanted too. I never could understand the PGC's having a major problem with them. You will get much more action over an apple tree or dropping Oak than a mineral lick when season rolls around. Sure would be fun in March through June though.

We are breaking up tm blocks from about june on and just putting small amounts on the stumps, and the salt will be gone from them at least 30 days prior, but these bucks are about to make a major shift and those areas are not good any way.  They do still chew the stumps and such but by the time arrows are flying this isn't where I want to hunt.  We just use them to supplement some minerals through the winter and summer.  I will have a stand on a hillside that is maybe 450 yards away from one of them, but there are no direct trails.  Although I am sure if a warden wanted to push the issue it could be a problem without digging it out.  They arrested a guy for hunting a bear over bait who was over 800 yards away from the grease pole at his camp and said that the trail led to there eventually.

Beech nuts were dropping heavy in Patton Pa last weekend.

Musky, what are you puttin on the stumps??

Is that a regular salt lick or is it something else??

Id like to set up a little camera deal around here and was wondering what you were using to get them in to photo range.

Some shots from this week.

Not sure whats wrong with this little guys hair.  Don't know if the discoloration is mud or just the way his hair is.

I think that because there is salt on the stump, they stay away from the camera.  I have never noticed the flash spooking the bears.  I do have some bucks that have never been back after being "flashed" and then there are those that are there almost every night.   I am gradually switching to IR to get rid of the problem.

Got pics of a pretty nice one two weeks ago.  Not much tine length but lots of points and descent mass.

I also got a couple of a doe that didn't seem to like the camera much.

That's what I started to think when I saw a couple more whose hair looked similar.  This doe does not like the camera for some reason.  she has a little on with her so that may be the reason.  She has come right up to it a few different times but this was the best one.

We checked cameras today got alot of pictures of doe, small bucks and 3 really nice buck. Also check the old mans camera today to find that we had a bear not to help to be flashed. It was just a cheap wildview flash camera. He broke the lense when he swatted it it now takes white pictures in the day but still works great at night. We put a wildview IR there now.

Got our Stealth Cam up finally last week.... hope to get some pics up later this week....( Got a heavy 8 around here). Earlier in this thread ppl were talkin about a poor buck to doe ratio.... with more bucks than does.... I hunt 2B in Allegheny and the number of does is RIDICULOUS!!!! We got at least a 7:1 doe to buck ratio based on what I've seen from the camera this summer and dove hunting this fall....
