I've got no idea as to what exactly they could be.  I checked on the Ducks Unlimited website and they don't have a pic that matches those two ducks.  What they could be is a hybrid of some sort because they kind of look like a mallard/pintail cross.  Not really sure about these though...

Was thinking the same thing. The front one definitely looks like a mallard-pintail.

My vote would be for a hybrid.  We have quite a few in our area that are a mix of domestic ducks and wild ducks.  Some are rather interesting looking...

In some photos I posted a while back on one of Flyman's threads of some mallards, I think there were a few hybrids in the mix -- one was right up front in one of the pics and looked to be a mallard/pintail cross or a mallard/black duck cross.  I haven't seen many though...

Bughawk is right.  That is an official "mutt" duck.  Obviously the duck to the right is a mallard mutt and the other looks like a possible bufflehead/mallard mutt.  Some ugly genetics there.

I was thinking the one on the left looked more like a blue bill/mallard cross...

Left one looks like a mallard/bluebill cross for sure, not sure about the drake, some kinda of mallard hybrid.

See the faint white streak behind the eye on the left one.  'Bills don't have anything white on their head.  Buffies/Butterballs of both sexes have that white behind the eye.

Yeah but that white streak behind the eye is VERY faint, it it's part of the duck at all.  It could just be the way the picture was taken and it may be a glare from the sun.  I'd think I could be safe to say it isn't a buffy mix and now that I keep looking at it, it could more likely be a bluebill/pintail hybrid.  Notice the white chest/neck that pintails have is prominent in both of the ducks shown in the photo above.  Besides, buffleheads are very small in size compared to a mallard or pintail -- even bluebills make buffy's look tiny... kinda would be like a schnauzer mating with a doberman -- sizes just don't match up.

I just want to say there are several pairs of these ducks on the river now. I saw around 6 pairs of these yesterday while fishing. They show up every spring along with Mallards. They usually keep their distance from people and are wild ducks. Here is another photo. Also these ducks all look the same as far as markings. This is a hen and drake pair. I'll try to get more photos.

Yup, sure look like half breeds. Could be crossed with tame ducks that's why there is open season on tame birds year round.

I gotta admit -- I love bow hunting and everything, but I LOVE waterfowling!  You just can't beat a good group of friends in a blind together with a good dog, telling stories watching the sun come up over your decoys.  After I went waterfowling once, I was hooked... I mean hooked deep down in the throat.  If you want to give it a try, hit me up next season if you're looking to hunt in Erie.
