Susky Smallmouth action 5/28/08

Got out on the river today with a guy from work... caught 8 between to 2 of us. Water was stained and still a little cool. Things are heating up though..

Nice fish Tim.  That doesn't look like the west branch in clearfield to me?  I take it you were on the main stem????

    Toe,
The population is still significantly depressed. The I could type two pages in regards to the issue but suffice to say the population that is present is very healthy.  We just need the weather to hold (no floods/no droughts) and let this years young of the year succeed.  The problem is that smallmouths have a very slow growth rate.  A 16 inch Susquehanna river smallmouth is, on averager, 12 years old.  SO even if the next few years produce record recruitment classes it's going to YEARS until the population is back to what it was in the early later 90's and early 2000's.
A little more enforcement on bucket fisherman and a reduction in tournament activity would help also but that's a who different story

Anyways, nice fish Tim.  Love then smallies.

Yeah... def. on the main branch. I'm lucky if I catch a 12" smallmouth back home on the west branch.

All the fish we caught looked healthy and were returned after a quick picture. One or two had some small leaches on them that were removed. Other than that they all looked pretty good.
