Whitefish

Was talking to a fella from work and he has a friend that went to Canada and caught some whitefish. I believe there are whitefish in lake Erie has any one ever caught them before? How do you find them? Also I hear that their mouths are really small and hard to hook. Was just wondering if anyone has any info on them. Thanks.

I fowl hooked one in the tail while fishing for smallmouth during the spawn. It was over 20 inches and it took me like 15 minutes to reel it in. The easiset way to get one is to go to barcelona, ny and get a smoked one. They taste so good.

My daughter-in-law hooked one at the "wall" on Walnut about three years ago, but it was pretty beat up so we didn't keep it.  Only one I hae ever seen.  Aren't they pretty much deep water fish?

Mostly, but not when they spawn.

Used to fish them in New York Adirondak lakes. Set out bouy - deep water (50'+) - chum with cooked rice - fish with small hooks baited with whole kernel corn, small worms, etc. - also you could at that time snag them with small trebles! Caught one trolling once with a silver spoon!!

Heres a 10lber that I got from Lake Simco Ontario a few winters back in 85 feet of H2O. I heard of guys catching them on soft water, but its hard, they stay deep and feed on the bottom. The do have paper mouths and a lot of them are lost if you try to horse them. I've only caught them through the ice, but man are they tastey.

Are they the same as mountain whitefish???? Caught them on dry flies in Montana. Sucks when you think you got a 20" trout and then along comes Mr. Whitey....

I commercial fished for them in Georgian Bay of Lake Huron. They are my favorate eating fish! I tried to catch them through the ice in Simco however I wasn't sucessful. I have never heard of anyone trying to hook and line them in G.Bay as they are so deep. They come in to spawn late fall just before ice up and it can be brutal on the lake at that time.

There are suposed to be some in Erie however not many. They are a member of the Trout family, see the fleshy fin between the Dorsal and Tail on its back. Smoked, Baked,Broiled,or Boiled they are the best.
