Bunch of Boat Questions

I am in process of buying a boat for the first time. (16 foot alum. bass boat with merc 35)  I am 21 and see that I have to take the boating test. I was about to attempt it today and saw that it was pretty tough for me. I was wondering if anyone has any tips for this test.

Also, does this license allow me to operate a boat in Ohio, this is where I will be doing most of my fishing.  I am buying the boat with my brother-in-law and he lives in Ohio. I boat will be registered in Ohio.

Thanks for everything guys.

I was going to take the test online also but found that it was hard for me to pass the practice test so I bit the bullet and went to a class. The test was easier and the class was very helpful. After you pass the test the card that they issue you is good for all states. I know it sucks having to sit in a class but I think that you will find it easier because if you have any questions someone can answer them for you.

Go through and read ALL the material and write it down as you go through.  Follow along with each chapter and take the review tests for each chapter.  Alot of the test is common sense.  Chapter 3 I found to be the toughest with all the markers, signals and sound indicators you had to know.  It is essential information that you should retain in order to ensure your safety and others' safety out on the water.  If you follow along and take all the chapter review tests and go back and study the stuff you missed, then take the practice test a few times, you should ultimately be fine.  Good Luck.

If you take it online, you can open the study book on different page and look all the answers up, although you may not learn as much.  If you are new to boating then you should probably read the book.   Chapter 3 is pretty difficult, especially if you boat only on Lake Erie, because you rarley see any of the markers.

The course is anywhere from 50 to 75.00, one time. You never take it again. What I'm getting to is take the course, if possible use the coast guard aux. I don't care how much experience you have there is always something that you have forgotten. I've been boating for the better part of my 45 yrs of life and part of that has been sailing and co-captaining for 25+ yrs. We all learn something out of it. I know there's a test out for 25.00, yes thats less expensive than the 50 but give yourself a great refresher.

Like everyone has said the online one is easy since you can cheat.

It really is a pretty challenging test.  Much more difficult then the "land" drivers license test.  Alot of the stuff is rarely if ever used by the standard fishermen, but itll never hurt to learn I guess.

The big question you need to find out is if it is good over in Ohio.  I found out that the PA cert. is no good in Maryland.  It was a good thing I checked before I loaded up the boat to go duck hunting.
