Proposed Game Comm. Changes

Looks like our good governor is doing his best to take over the running of the game commission. Before you know it he'll be leasing Comm. properties to private clubs and the average "joe" will be excluded from his property purchased by his license fees over the past 113 years. Not to mention the****of the natural resourses for the "GOOD" of the state. Sounds a bit like communism to me. Won't be long before the entire system(Fish & Game Comm's) will be under the complete control of state, for the state, at the expense of sportsmen and other outdoor lovers.

Notebook: Game Commission overhaul?Sunday, March 30, 2008By John Hayes, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Pennsylvania Game Commission's board of directors could be reorganized if a new House bill becomes law.
Last week State Rep. Mike Hanna (D-Clinton/Centre) introduced legislation that would prohibit former Game Commission employees or deputy conservation officers from serving on the commission's board. The bill also stipulates that eight state residents with knowledge of wildlife conservation and restoration would be appointed to the board by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate, and they would be required to consider the possible social, economic and recreational impact of their wildlife management decisions.
"Many outdoorsmen and sportsmen and women are increasingly disillusioned about the board's decisions on hunting regulations and the management of the State Game Lands," said Hanna in a prepared statement. "It's obvious the current board is out of touch with the general public. We need a different perspective on wildlife management and other issues from the people who have a direct stake in the outcome."
The state legislature created the Game Commission in 1895, making it solely responsible for the management of wildlife resources for the benefit of all Pennsylvanians. The bill is under consideration by the House Game and Fisheries Committee.

Sounds exactly like what the USP , and the "there's no deer left" crowd have been wanting for the past few years.

    Wally,

It was a state rep. that introduced this NOT the governor.

As I read this, the only thing that it will REALLY change, is that former PGC employees are no longer eligible for appointment to the commission. The wording in regards to the duties/requirements of appointees, "they would be required to consider the possible social, economic and recreational impact of their wildlife management decisions." is a bit different, but not significantly from what they have always been. If anything, it's exactly what USP wants. Do what's best for the huinter, not necessarily what's best for the herd.

USP don't know what they want..

First, it's the PGC to be indpendent

then, reduce the commissioner terms to four years.

    Then scientific based management,

then, no state, no, no, no , no , no, no state, manages by science.

    huh?

      My goodness, I'm getting dizzy.

    Spoonchucker..

I believe it's  a part of the bill to reduce the term limit of the commissioners from 8 years to 4...

This is just another step by one of the antis to make sure people with knowledge of wildlife and habitat and hunting issues do not get on the board... and can be changed as the tide turns...

The governor can then help appoint folks that will answer to him rather than be independent thinkers... and hunters will take a back seat to non-hunters...

I can see the gamelands turning to camping areas, hiking trails, state parks, horseback trials, and atv trail now....

What are you guys talking about? The commissioners are already appointed by the govenor and are already confirmed by the state Senate. Five of the current commissioners are Rendells appointees. Do you think that the govenor would currently appoint anyone who doesn't already follow his line of thinking? As  Spoon said they already are supposed to consider, and do claim to consider, social, ecnomic, and recreation aspects in their decisions. I'll agree with doc that Rendells goal is to merge the PFBC, PGC, and DCNR but don't see this bill as doing much to further that goal.
