Seven Mile

Just wondering.

Iv'e fished 7 mile before without a whole lot of success, Is this stream stocked or does it just recieve strays?  There's really no good holding water here and I was just wondering if they spend the money to stock it.

It gets stocked but a lot of the fish hold in the lower three holes and get fished out. There used to be fish above route 5 but that is posted now. I don't know what it's like above the posted ground.

    S-10,

I'm pretty sure that 7 mile, does not get stocked by the PF&BC. It may get some from the local clubs.

    Loomis,

I just got your voicemail tonight, no sweat about the eggs bro.  We'll have to hit up some trout around here sometime soon.

Back to your question... As far as I know, it WAS stocked, not sure about the past three years though.  IMO it's not even worth it to stock that stream anymore, there are literaly about 3 areas where fish can hold.

I've had some REALLY good days there up until about 3 or 4 seasons ago.  Seems like the past few years there has been less and less holding water each year, less fish also.  Anymore that stream isnt even worth the walk.

What I never understood is why Seven Mile was stocked with fish, but Eight Mile wasnt?  There is 10 times the amount of holding water on eight mile, and as far as I know its public property up untill rt 5.  Plenty of parking aswell... beats me

Spoon-- You may be right but if the locals do it they use the state truck to carry them. Three years ago i was fishing back to rte 5 when smolts started swimming past me by the dozens. When i got to the bridge the state truck was just leaving. There wern't thousands but there were many hundreds of the little things.

This was the next question I was getting to..

I saw in the steelhead guide today on the throne that seven mile as of 2002 got a stock of 10,000 fish a season...as far as now I dunno, but the real question is why isn't 8 mile stocked?? The stream has such a better context and parking is all over....Just an idea for maybe another east adventure.

    S-10,

You may be right also. I don't recall seeing it on the stocking list, but us old folks don't catch everything.

    See :  http://www.fish.state.pa.us/images/fisheries/afm/2007/1_lec2006report.pdf   (pp 22 and 23.)

In 2006, the PFBC stocked 19,200 steelhead smolts in Sevenmile Creek and the  Wesleyville Conservation Club stocked 1,660 steelhead smolts in Sevenmile Creek

2007 report still being assembled but FYI:
In 2007 , the PFBC stocked 18,720 smolts in Sevenmile Creek,  and WCC stocked 920 smolts in Sevenmile Creek.

For some reason, 7 mile has gotten very few fish this year. The big hole has filled in, and hasn't seen many fish. I haven't seen any fish past the picnic grounds at all, unlike previous years. I did OK at the first falls
in October, but got tired of walking down, and seeing no fish. I haven't been there since November, so maybe it's changed. There is so little
area to fish there, you might as well keep going if more than one car is parked there.

It does get some stocking, by the WCC I believe. I know in previous years I've had to use larger streamers in the spring to keep them off.

It's a shame what happened to the creek in 2004. The heavy rains wiped out the good holes and washed almost the whole creek to bare slate.
Maybe in 15 or 20 years, it'll be back to where it was.  2003-2004
was the last really good year there. Same with 4 mile.

Have you ever been to 8 mile?  It's barely a trickle except during heavy runoff. It makes Cascade Creek look like a river.

LOL...actually if cascade had a better flow for the majority of the run, it would be filled, theres a lot of holes in there...but its usually low and clear and the slightest rain or snow meltoff turns it into roaring chocolate milk...

Pete-- The more I think about it your right about 4 and 7 mile. 2004 was about when the fishing dropped off on both streams for me. They used to be my favorites but now I just check them out of habit and usually move on. It really sucked when the long hole at the bottom of 4 mile filled in. I was there yesterday for a short time and it is just a shadow of what it used to be a few years ago. I also used to do good at the bottom of 8 mile but that changed for the worse about the same time.
