Fishing Erie Tribs 3/15 and 3/16

Is anybody going up this weekend?  I am going to be fishing this Saturday and Sunday (3/15 and 3/16).

Since this is only my second trip I am new to how the conditions will play out the next few days.  Since Erie got that foot of snow this past weekend I am wondering if that has a good chance of messing the conditions this weekend.  I see that Thursday is calling for some showers and then rain/snow on Friday, so I am unsure as to how it will effect the streams for Saturday and Sunday.  I couldn't imagine that it would be able to melt all 12 inches and blow out the creeks.  Let me know!

it is really like any other situation.  There is no way to tell how things will be until Thursday and Friday roll around and we see how much snow/rain and how warm the daytime and night time temps are.

The creeks will be flowing though, so if you can adjust techniques - you can always hook up.

I was there today and did very well, but there is  A LOT of snow in Erie to be melted in the next few days with the warm-up coming they are calling for.  Your best bet is to just wait and see.  Call one of the local bat shops like BAC or Poor Richard's later in the week to get your best indication.  Good Luck.

Agreed that we won't know until Thursday or so as the conditions shape up for the weekend.  I wanted to start this early as the discussions can continue throughout the week.  Thanks for all of your input thus far.

ask kokanee killer, hes stated hes already caught fish in nov 2008. Just kidding he missdated.

All depends on wether the Weather man is right or wrong. those streams can change in 4 hours or less.

I think with the slight warm up the next few days it should blow out some of the ice and we will have good flow/color for the weekend.

I would'nt want to guess at the trib conditions with all the snow on the ground here. They could change hour to hour with a small degree of temp difference. What I can tell you for sure is that there are plenty of active fish left in upper Elk. We fished there today (wed.) and caught plenty, lost more. Lots of fun!

Agreed.  It looks like there will be some showers tomorrow that will hopefully melt some snow and blow more ice out and color the water a little for Saturday and Sunday.  Hopefully not too much color though.

Does anybody know how the East side streams are doing as far as ice goes?

Don't know about the East side, but I can give you a quick report on Elk.  I fished the Legion area yesterday and the day before.  There was some ice around the edges, but nothing to be concerned about.  The water level was good and there was a bit of cloudiness to the water.  There were some large sheets of ice that did float by, so keep an eye upstream for ice.

Personally, I did not have much luck hooking up, one landed yesterday with two foul hook ups, and one on Tuesday, but some of the guys I talked to said they did well.  They were using bait and I was using flies.  One thing I did notice, nothing new for this time of the year, is you really need to be "right on" the fish.  They are a bit sluggish in the cold water and don't seem to be too interested in chasing streamers right now.

I talked with a fellow who said he fished the lower sections of Elk yesterday down near Uncle John's and he said the stream was pretty open and he caught quite a few.

One thing to keep in mind is the weather.  The temperature is supposed to get into the high 30's and low 40's today and mid to high 40's tomorrow with some rain.  If we get a good melt, which is likely with the higher temps and some rain, the streams should go up.  Don't hold me to the weatherman's predicitions, but just be ready just in case the flows are up and the streams are cloudy.

Good bait choices would be skein, egg sacs and night crawlers.  Minnies and jigs tipped with maggots should do the trick as well.  For flies, larger glo bugs (#12, #14) in chartruse, red or darker pinks and orange along with black, dark brown and olive woolly buggers, skein buggers and streamers ought to work....  If you have anything in blue, give it a try.

    Good luck.

this morning was my best all year so far. lots of feisty fish in upper elk.witnessed some breeding today.i was confused why there were so many adult fish in a shallow riffle on our way down the creek.but on the way back to the truck we saw some fish doing it. yeah with all that snow on the ground its tough to say what will happen.i know we noticed plenty of changes in the flow in the time we were there.any rain and it could be flood city. just keep ur fingers crossed, ur eyes on the weather and talk to poor richards they will always try to steer you in the right direction.
