I had to start caging my tomatoes. Got 36 caged and ran out of usable cages. 20 left I will just stake.
A few blossoms already

Hope everyone's garden is thriving.
We are already into drought conditions. Streams are low, grass is brown and watering everyday.
The chickens are 7 weeks old and very good sized. The plan was to process them in 2 weeks. I just hope they survive this weeks heat wave of 90 degrees.

9th driest May on record ( 200 years).
Water restrictions in our town and fire watches.
This is the earliest drought conditions I can remember.
Not good as there's nothing significant in forecast for 7 days except possibly cooler temperatures by Saturday.

I'm spraying the chickens twice a day so they don't boil. Hopefully they can make the next 2 days before processing.

Ya scorcher here as well. No rain in the forecast for a couple weeks. I've been running the sprinklers every evening. Everything looks great besides that. Good luck with the birds.

Just finished up tomato plant maintenance. Pruned and staked em. Pepper plants are looking choice and the vine stuff is climbing nicely. Man if we had a good 2 dayer soaker, that stuff would look like a jungle already. 🤞 🌧

Pen , I'm happy to hear things are doing OK. Just gotta get through 1 more day of scorcher, for now.
Chickens here look like they will make it thanks for afternoon hose showers and cool nights. We're ready to get things done on Saturday.
Just finished the 2hr watering duty on garden Have to wait until the sun isn't beating down.
Also tied a second string on most tomatoes.
Heck yeah, I'd take 2 days of showers..
Most our farmers are drawing water from creeks and streams.
I'm on the fence about my garlic turnout. It was a mild winter and it sprouted all winter. The stalks are thick and tall ( with scapes now ) but just picked 1 and the bulbs are a little undersized that I'd thought. Still a B grade and we got a few weeks left.
Peppers ain't doing squat. Not sure why I have trouble. Maybe need more fertilizer ?
Lettuce is weak, spinach so so , beans weak ,radishes maybe ready next week. Cabbage and Brussels doing great but they're the long haul.
Didn't bother or get time for cukes and zucchini. Local farm stands will do.
Fruit trees:
Zero peach blooms.
Apples and pears good
Blueberries good.

We didn't do pigs as my farmer retired from raising pigs and we'll take this year off.
All our livestock and game harvests seem to work out perfectly to almost the year of harvest.
We'll be short on pork in 2024.
Be well and stay cool

Update.
Chicken processing went extremely well.
Cooler temperatures, a slight breeze and all stations ready at the go.
While we've been living in smoke filled skies, the overcast and intermittent rain for about 5 days has helped tremendously.
Daily pickings of lettuce, spinach, radishes, scapes and a garlic bulb twice.
Tomatoes are rocking as is cabbage and Brussels.
Beans still so so and peppers, blah.
Lots of pears and apples on the trees. Got it down to a bi weekly spraying with neem. Seems to be working.
Currently there is no livestock on the homestead and will be so for the rest of 2023. Our freezers are stocked into 2024.

Here is 1 garlic bulb I just picked as I classified as b grade. I'm hoping for a 50% a/b harvest.
Enjoy the growing season.

Re: The garden thread 2023/06/09 17:17:45 (permalink)
So 5 days in a row we've had perception. Not a lot but just enough to keep the garden from having to water.
Good stuff. Tomatoes are already producing fruit. Probably clean out most of the spinach, radishes and lettuce within a week and replant with more green beans.
Garlic will definitely be harvested by July 4th weekend. Plan is to replant something in their beds.
I'm pretty booked up the entire month of June with fishing and claiming.
Hopefully get a late summer/ fall garden going again in July

Pulled my softneck a little bit ago. Very good yield, lots of 1s and 2s on a scale of 5 being a small head. I still have another 120 hardneck to get to this evenging. How long do I wait until I braid that softneck? This is my first year for it. I've only planted the hard these last 4 years.

Picked 2 maters already and have 2 peppers about ready.  Plants starting to take off.  Cukes and zukes were in late so they are behind.  Pulled spinach yesterday that bolted...lettuce probably won't be far behind.  Herbs look like a jungle...love picking the fresh basil for caprese and the cilantro for salsa, gaucamole or to spruce up the fajitas and tacos.

Nice going folks on the gardening.
To pens question, I only grow hardneck but I'd assume to braid asap before the stalks dry. I don't get that fancy in braiding.
My lettuce and spinach have been cleared out. Both did well.
Tomatoes are a jungle with a ton of fruits. Been pulling a few ripe ones since Saturday.
Couldn't wait any longer on the garlic because I don't want them to start splitting.
Just got 1/2 of my batch laid out to dry and hopefully get the rest out tonight.
98% is prime seed quality. This will be the last go around on replanting these 8th generation ( of me ) german reds and white. I'll pass a bunch along for others to plant.
I'm going more towards roja and purple stripes in my fall planting.
Lots to do and way to hot out to make progress.
Stay cool.

It's been a minute for this thread. I know we're all busy. I'm done with the pickles 32 Quarts and 12 pints ( 2 flavors). I just got a dozen quarts of tomatoes up, and there are crazy amounts out there to be picked. My peppers were all duds, but the neighbors brought us a couple of baskets. We made stuffed peppers, and you can never go wrong with that tomato pepper cuke salad. Hopefully everyone is having a great growing season. I'd say we still have a good 2 months left🤞.

It’s been a so-so year here. The good is the couple of gallons of blueberries off of 4 small bushes, 39 jars of green beans with at least one more good picking, Had a small row of carrots and got 5 pints out of them, lettuce, beets, onions and garlic did well also. The not so good is the cucumber, watermelon and pumpkins are pretty much toast, tomatoes are not as good as usual but may rally yet. Jury is still out on the peppers, corn and potatoes.

Hope everyone has a successful season

My garden really took off this year, even a little to much. Tomatoes got way out of control due to lack of pruning but sakes alive, they are producing like crazy now. As of tonight we have 30 quarts canned and the motherload is just starting.
Beans, yellow and green were and still fantastic yield. We canned 16 pints of 3 bean salad.
Onions did well and peppers took off in July producing great both bell and hot.
Cukes went wild and we shut them down after 16 pints of pickles.
Dehydrator runs daily with all herbs.
Garlic did fantastic although the drying process with the humidity even with fans was tough.
I'm retiring and giving away all my German reds and white seed Garlic. Going strictly roja and purple stripe forward. .
Brussels and cabbage are doing great also.
I planted zucchini late and it's looking like about 3 weeks to harvest
Probably run another round of greens soon and call it a good season.
With our meats, fish and vegetables from the homestead, we're well into 2024 without starving

Tomatoes, Tomatoes and more tomatoes.
We processed these yesterday giving us another 13 quarts. Currently at 43 quarts canned. I just picked another 4 bags last evening which we'll process on Monday.
The motherload is here and it's heavy.
I'll be shutting them down at around 60 quarts and giving everything away to the church and pantry. Going to pull all out at end of August and preparing those beds for garlic planting in October.
Busy stuff on the homestead.

It was difficult drying season for garlic but their ready for processing and storage. Only a few will be replanting by me as I have a different variety to start a new. Most will be passed to friends to start their garlic gardens. Attachments are not available: Download requirements not met

Currently at 58 quarts, 12 pints of sauce after last night's canning. I processed another 13 quarts last night that the wife simmered down today and I will can tonight. Picked another 4 colanders tonight along with lots of basil, oregano, peppers and 4 zucchini.
I'm going to officially shut down 1 of my tomato beds this weekend and till it up for fall garlic bed. I always rotate my crops.
We've been hammering the pickled beans and B&b pickles. I have more cukes that I started late that should be ready mid September. Not sure if I plant beans now they will be ready to harvest before frost. Probably hit up my farmer for more beans to can.
Love the garden and hate to see it coming to an end but fall is onto another type of harvest. I'll start hitting the panfish pretty hard soon and prepare for the game of the woods.
So sorry but I just can't get excited anymore about the Ontario tributary fishing.
