I respect most everyone's ideas or beliefs on here from MyWar -- ICE NUT. It is sad how a good percent of how the world works.

East Asians seem to have the most Neanderthal DNA in their genomes, followed by those of European ancestry. Africans, long thought to have no Neanderthal DNA, were recently found to have genes from the hominins comprising around 0.3 percent of their genome

Anybody that is following the railroad workers story should give this a read. It’s a great piece of explanatory journalism.

What are you some kind of dirty socialist? Why is it the government’s job to take care of anybody? If you want more money then get a better job or stop spending all that money on fishing gear and avocado toast.

It looks like Tapper is playing the part of the labor activist here.

That’s fine I guess. But what I would really like to see from a news source like a CNN is an explanation as to why exactly these paid sick days are such a sticking point. That would be real journalism. And if you take a look at the link I posted above, it is explained in better detail.

It basically comes down to the operating model that the railroads use, which relies on critically understaffed crews. And unexpected absences (as you have with sick time) are extremely difficult to manage when you are critically understaffed to begin with. So in order for railroads to offer paid sick time, they would have to make some pretty substantial changes to their operating model, and they would rather make a bunch of smaller, easier concessions than fundamentally alter their way of doing business.

Maybe CNN has done reporting that explains this, I don’t know. If they have, I haven’t seen it. I can say that I generally haven’t seen much reporting that goes into *why* the railroads are unwilling to give paid sick time, and it’s actually a very important part of the story if you want to understand the bigger picture.

Also … I believe it was 43 senate republicans + joe manchin who voted against paid sick time. The bill would have passed without the filibuster. It had pretty much universal support from democrats in both chambers of congress.

So let’s talk about how it’s all “both sides” and Biden is turning his back on workers.

This is the tip of the iceberg in relation to corporate business models, profit margins, excessively paid upper management and the American worker.  The current model based on consumerism for American families and the incredible shrinking workforce orchestrated by corporate management in order to maximize excessive top end salaries  is unsustainable.  (See GREAT DEPRESSION)  The family unit in the United States is bursting at its seams with stress, work, media inundation and unfortunately addiction.
I believe in the capitalist model but not the greed driven slave driver model.

I saw and read the article before you posted it but thanks it was interesting. Since the primaries in 16 I have spent way too much time reading and watching videos on politics so that is why I posted "It is sad how a good percent of how the world works" I probably spent more time wasting time on the subject than Porktown has spent posting on this site if that is even possible

Re: Patriots 2022/12/02 12:04:08 (permalink)
It's refreshing to be discussing/arguing issues, is it not?  Pete Buttigieg referred to not being able to afford "brinksmanship" with respect to this matter, and, I can understand how the political and economic ramifications of a strike would be damaging to the Biden administration.  BUT....considering that the issue of minimal paid sick leave is so universally supported...could not the force of the matter - its damaging effects on American families and business - be effectively brought to bear on the corporate/investor establishment?  Was that too much of a lift?  Am I just dreaming?

My solution is simple: a one clause amendment to the Family and Medical Leave Act - which, among other things, provides workers the right to an unpaid JOB PROTECTED leave of up to 12 weeks in any one year for serious medical issues.  That clause would be"...at least one week of said leave to be paid."   Covered employee  can't be legally fired for getting sick under FMLA terms.

LDD is right...these business models that don't support human and family needs, and that exacerbate disfunction, aren't sustainable.  Like the Fram oil filter ad said:  pay now or pay later.

Maybe we can chip away at the issue though....this study is interesting.

That’s really the crux of the issue from a political standpoint though, isn’t it? How could the Biden administration force the hand of the railroads? What leverage do they have?

The best option was to get legislation through congress. That’s really the only way to force management to do right by the workers. And it failed because we have a dysfunctional senate and republicans don’t give a shiit about American workers.

The other option is to go nuclear and shut it all down, then wait for the railroads to flinch, which would be an extremely bold and risky move. Biden would be gambling with a linchpin of the US economy and the lives and livelihoods of millions of people. It’s not hard to imagine republicans absolutely hammering him for letting the economy grind to a halt, and it’s not hard to imagine alot of voters agreeing.

I like to think I’m extremely sympathetic to labor when it comes to workers rights but I honestly don’t know what I would do if I was in Biden’s position.

The rottenest word in the English language:  consensus.  I think it means that everyone leaves the table unhappy.  I guess you don't do any single big thing politically, but rather in smaller steps.  This is what I had in mind in bringing up FMLA.  Pass a law if you want something to stick.

[You know a large percentage of homeless people have full jobs

with respect, FG..how many homeless folks do you actually know?
'cause I question that "large percentage" have full time jobs
I'm involved with them (trying to help,  be it shelter, food, drug rehab or convincing them to take their meds that are FREE to them)
and see/know what their problems are.

I actually rub elbows with them and don't know any that have full time jobs

Interesting.  I wonder what the technical definitions of homeless and sheltered homeless are?

If it weren't for families letting kids or other relatives live with them or groups of friends/roommates sharing rent, imagine how many people would be homeless?  The average cost of living for a single person is dependent on where they live, but US average is over $30k.  That means close to $40k salary once Uncle Sam takes his cut.  The MEDIAN income in the US is under $40k...

The average for a family of 4 is near $80k.  I found this out a few years ago putting together a budget.  I was shocked of how much we were spending.  Found out that I was right around average.  You would need to make 6 figures to raise a family of four on a single income.  If living "average".

I just Googled this figure. Google says the median income in the US is $1070 per week. So we're looking at $55,670 per year. This would be the figure that the government bases all their calculations on. What Google wouldn't give me, (or I didn't use the right trigger words), is how many Americans make less, (or much less) than the median. 2018 was my best year @ $41,500. Apparently I must've been a below average citizen.

I looked a bit closer of where I pulled that figure. It was pretty old figure. What you noted is full time median. Which doesn’t include those working part time jobs since all they can find or qualified to work. Regardless, after taxes, that median income figure just covers the average cost of living with not much to save. Someone making minimum wage full time, would have a hard time not being homeless, if they don’t have a free place to live or highly subsidized.

add the $9-$12k earned income credit many folks get every year.
as well EBT, free health care  (in Ohio anyway)  and other bennies .

actually puts them ahead of the families at the bottom of the gov cheese cut-off.

from that report

Findings from the University of Chicago study highlight this discrepancy: the mean annual earnings for people experiencing sheltered homelessness aged 18 – 64 was $8,169 in 2015 (pre-tax income, which excludes benefits). Mean earnings for unsheltered people were even lower at $6,934 in 2015 and have generally stayed lower than their sheltered counterpart during the ten-year frame of study

Those aren't full time workers.
What it represents to me, is what I see from the ground floor on the street.
Many have had jobs, but can't keep them because they're too dysfunctional to work for very long without quitting or getting canned for absenteeism

One I placed two months ago in temp housing fits that typical profile.
at 57 years old, he's had several decent jobs (one paid very well with excellent bennies)
He said he got canned from that job.
I asked it it was because of absenteeism...he told me the truth..yep got canned for missing work

Three more we placed in temp housing this month...young man physically fit, 40 something year old woman and her 20 YO daughter.
ALL physically able to work full time and qualify for PMHA (permanent subsidized housing)
They just can't muster the wherewithal to go along with the programs that are available

The number of families making less than median is half.  Median is the figure in the middle with half above and half below.

There are a ton of different numbers on the internet, like I noted on the ones that I pulled from with older dates...  But location makes up even more of a swing.  The one that I was looking at had all of the states and didn't have a median for the US as a whole, I estimated off of the states.  Which added to my figures being incorrect.

That said the median for USA is a bit deceiving.  Cities like NY, SF, LA, which make up a good portion of the population, have completely different economies than much of the rest of the country that skew that median a good bit.  The median of states are even a bit misleading, since Philadelphia median is a good bit higher than Pittsburgh, which is a good bit higher than the surrounding area, with other more rural communities likely even lower cost of living and lower median incomes.  I would bet in 2018, $41,500 was very close to median in the surrounding areas of Pittsburgh.  That is counting full time workers only too.  Add in those that aren't full time and likely much lower.  At least that is how I would interpret the "household incomes", which usually consists of two adults, being much less than 2 times the median single person income.  I would bet you were probably well on the higher side of average of your local area, including all working age adults.

This is what I saw.  In your original statement you called out Trump, credited Tucker and Hannity with propping up the Trump cult, then equated Maddow and Cooper propping up a left cult.

to anyone objective and unbiased, what he said was accurate

I'm not sure what you're getting at??
I think Pork made that comment, Jerry rebutted
and I agreed with Pork on that particular comment he made

The agenda driven talking heads on the left and the right are just two different sides of the same coin to me.
Both make excuses and condone their own, while throwing rocks at the other side.
and 73.995% of the electorate left 'n right  swallows their manipulative bullony  and simply parrots it

don't know if that's considered bias, unbiased or just plain  honest.
either way, I just call 'em as I see 'em

Anyone want to sit around and trade Trump cards this weekend. Maybe go to a sauna (towels optional) and possibly rub cocoa butter on each other?

I hear these are the best, most beautiful, greatest NFTs to ever hit the market. At $99 a piece, everyone should get online and buy them up, while supplies last. Jus say'IN.

Pork,
Step back from the edge, It sounds as you've went all in with the cult

They say to always jump in heads first, right!

I don’t follow international politics, but this has to be the most bizarre thing that I have ever heard in politics. It being announced as a major announcement makes it even better. I figured, whoever would be in the mind to consider supporting, likely would be into being lathered up by a random old dude.

Ice Nut, joking around about getting extra close with other dudes is uncomfortable humor. Describing that graphic of an image of a little girl, probably has you on a watchlist now…
