Finally fished the old spot, first time since last November. Set a couple minnow traps in the yard and caught around 60 Shiners/Fatheads. Was nice to see some still in there since I have ignored it for the most part the last couple years.

Started at 4:45 hoping to get some Perch before dark. First 5 casts = 5 LM. I didn't want to waste the minnows on Bass so switched to a white curly tail and jig. Caught 9 Perch on those and no Bass
At 5:30 got the first Catfish on a float & Shiner. Wasn't paying attention and dang thing took a good 200 yards of line out  That was enough ov that and just fished for Crappie after. No Crappie caught before 5:40, when they came out of the vegetation.

It was like pea soup (fog) from 7:00--8:30. A cool breeze came in for a couple minutes at 8:58 then back to dead calm again. Got most of the Crappie on a slow twitching retrieve and made for better hook sets since they were a good ways out there.

Asked my youngest son if he wanted me to keep some Catfish and he said "yeah" Ended up keeping the two smallest for him at 25" and 28" the other 3 where just too big. Used a old yellow whippy Eagle Claw rod from the 1970's so that was some good memories.

Caught at least 15 L/M (pita) , 5 Cats, 3 Gills, kept 6 Perch, 39 Crappie, 2 Cats and a bonus 28" Eye all on the old Eagle Claw except the first Cat.

Last cast caught a 18" L/M at 9:12 and called it quits.

Pork, The Cats should be around for another week from shore and same with the Crappie.

Just started pouring up here at 10:50

Not as good as I posted above. Kept 30 Crappie not 39. Kept 39 total fish and first Crappie was caught at 6:40 not 5:40. I am terrible at posting / writing skills.

The lake did rise a little over the past few weeks.

Hear are the 2 smaller Cats and Eye from last night.

Fake news!

That sink itself looks like a nice haul. Bonus eyes are the best. Pretty much the only way that I catch them. I have maybe 5 eyes from actually targeting them on Arthur…. That is 20+ years too. Granted 20+ of those years, I had no clue of what I am doing targeting them…

Tim, since you don't keep any Byrds target Eyes at night when they come in season in the spring into early July. Just use darker lures and jointed, plus top water prop baits like the Dying Flutter. Your catch rate will go way up. Can't believe we never got into fishing for them at Arthur. During the day drag a Crawler with a dropshot. Timmy would get into them a good bit during the day but we never never target them in those areas.

Thanks Chris.  My nighttime fishing days have been limited the past few years.  I just can't seem to find the late night energy that I once had.  I'm in bed by 10 most nights...  I will definitely give that a try next year if I make it out at night.  I will give the daytime thing a shot.  I got one on a sonar last year in the winter.  Going to give that a shot again this year hopefully, if we can keep up the warm stretch into December.

Re: anyone fishing 2022/11/08 09:48:37 (permalink)
I went out on Friday and that bad of a day that I am finally posting now...  I have been in denial for a few days!  I think these "nice days" in the fall are the ones to avoid fishing.  Nice days in fall, usually come with a S or SW wind.  Which makes any northern cove or arm of the lake a nonstop wind tunnel.  I tried fishing for walleye for 2-3 hours.  Like most times that I focus on walleye, it was a complete waste of time...  I then moved into some wind tunnels to proceed to not catch the smaller cousin of the walleye.  I did get a nice catfish that turned into nuggets.  And one skinny largemouth that was probably 18".  Guessing it pooped out the lead weights from a summer tournament?  I thought it was finally a perch that I was targeting, but no luck.  When I hooked it, I instantly knew it wasn't the typical wet sock fight of a perch, but not enough pull to think cat or pike.  I think a return to seasonal weather should help???

This nice weather is my fault. If I put my boat to bed for winter it's guaren-dam-teed that we will have an extended Indian summer.

Kevin, that was my initial intention to fish that place but with no breeze took advantage to wade the next roadbed down stream. Have only caught 3 Eyes since the 1970's in the area you were thinking while wading. Have seen them swim right past me this time of year on occasion though.

Just cut part ov the grass where I had the leaves cleared at camp so trying for worms tonight, going to soak a section in a few minutes and see if I can get a few. If no good might set some Chub traps between Tim's place and camp. Saw a pile in there yesterday. If not plastics will do. Wanna wade a area at Pymy on Thursday if I make the time.

Don't even know if it is Soybean or Corn this year. Long walk back to find out.

Another failure at worm hunting last night. Only saw a single small slimy slow Slug for my efforts

Took Thursday off and drove up to Dunkirk NY, I fished Canadaway Creek from noon till dusk. Caught a monster brown trout and two decent steelhead. Woke up late this morning, made it to 20 mile around 8 am. Couldn't buy a bite using the same presentation, I called it a day at ten.

Great looking brown. Might want to put something under your reel when taking photos on sand.

I’ve ruined a few fishing at the beach before. Only need a grain or two to get in there and smooth turns to grind in no time.

I've hit Erie a few times and so far no Browns. Got a 10.8 pound male steelhead the other day.I miss fishing the creeks in western NY. I need to get a NY liscense.

FYI: Canadaway Creek and Chautauqua have a bunch of native/yearling trout in the streams. They usually hang to the rear of the holes, those little devils are aggressive and will clean you out of egg sacks quickly.

Work has me in NJ. Likely a week or two too early for the striper run. Got 3 dogfish and 1 skate…. Good to get on the beach for a bit, but not what I was hoping for.

Fished the other end yesterday for about 3 hours. 43.6°. Got a few small ones and 1 keeper. I'd say 3 more degrees until all the deep water haunts get good.

Spent three hours on Pool 4 Saturday. Only got one good fish, a small mouth trollin' a ScatterRap. Marked two schools of good fish in the middle of the river, suspended in 24' to 30' over 51 feet deep in the channel, but couldn't get the right presentation to trigger any hits. Surface temp of the river is 39.3 degrees. The dock at Freeport is out, makin' it a bit harder to get the boat back on the trailer. There was ice in Buffalo Creek goin' out but the river is clear.

Pymie was 40°. Fished all of our way points. Did decent. Not a slaughter but brought some fish home. More throw backs than last few seasons. Also each spot was only good for a handful a piece. Talked to a guy at the ramp who got a limit of eyes. Not sure where he was or at what depths. We jigged for a little with no luck. I'm gonna probably stay close and fish out Moraine until it's over. After these next few days, temps should be down to where we like em.
