I use one of these in 2lbs.  I coated in Plasti Dip.

Attached to about a foot of chain on a rope.  I used some lighter wire O-rings to make each connection (temporary key rings, you can easily make your own).  A good tug will unlatch the O-ring if it gets stuck on the bottom.

If using in current, make sure you can detach your anchor from your kayak easily.

For our heavier boat we use a 15 lb Danforth anchor with about 10 ft of heavy chain.  Anchor type and set up varies depending on type/weight of your vessel and your normal or expected bottom composition where you anchor.
I like Porktown's suggestion about the breakaway set up.

I am thinking of putting a pulley set up. Whatched a YouTube video on it. Also watched one about a pole for shallow water.

The anchor trolley is essential and super easy to install.

I’ve alternated between a 3lb folding anchor and some drag chains on a yak gear anchor trolley. I think I like the drag chains better; they are more versatile.

Those pole systems look great but the motorized ones are $$ and the DIY versions are more work and time than I can put into it right now. It’s easy enough to throw an anchor in shallow water with light current.

I also like to keep things pretty simple and light in the kayak. I fish out of a $300 cheapo from Dunhams. A couple drag chains on an anchor trolley are perfect for the shallow rivers, creeks and flat water lakes I fish from a kayak. But if you are fishing different water then your needs might be different.

I run my anchor line through my front carry handle as a “pulley”. I’m sure a pulley is much better, but I haven’t had an issue the way I do mine. I use a tarp clip to hold the line in place. Speaking of cheap…

I have always used one of these on all my kayaks:  https://www.yakattack.us/LeverLoc_Anchor_Trolley_p/ams-1003.htm

I used this to manage my line (remember you want to use 3' of line for every 1' of water depth):

For an anchor, I use a 5 pound neoprene dumbbell.  It's cheap because I would lose about three of them a year from getting hung up (I fish brush piles a lot).  Quick release system is a must.  Whether that is a "system" or just a knife attached to your PFD.

As for the above links, there are cheaper alternatives and Youtube is full of ideas, but these have never failed me.

Actually upon further review, that’s the anchor trolley I use too. I incorrectly posted “yak gear” above. But yea, it works well.

My buddy is a member of the Tupperware navy and he uses an 8-pound downrigger ball as an anchor for river fishing. Says it holds well and never gets wedged and stuck.

The poster formally known as Duncsdad

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.
