A bit about the weather. I know its been crazy. Streams are low, ground pretty hard. Last night around 3am we got our first thunderstorm. It was hard with lightning and heavy boomers . Woke my sister up crying and scared, she slept with us. Not so much fun even in a king bed.
It's much needed rain. The thunder rolled in a little while ago again with some light rain. Evey little bit helps. I can surely do without lighting or wind.

So my garden is ok. Its glad to hear of everyone else's reports of theirs and harvesting. Things are only getting better. Everyday imo..
I sealed a few scape packages for the freezer and we have many more. We cooked some tonight on our spaghetti.
Curing my final 5 lbs of bacon from last season's 80 lbs. I typically cure 40 lbs and 40 uncured. With our annual ( besides rona 19) we do our father's day family adventure to the ausable. 10 lbs bacon, , 4 dozen eggs, 10 lbs burger and 4 chickens.
Yes folks, its garden , farm, harvest time. Enjoy . . I'll be taking from the land and waters for the next 3 weeks

So our total harvest of meat chickens so far is 56 birds in the freezer. I agreed to my son half of our years harvest. At this point he's allotted 20 .
We just ordered another 25 to arrive August 12th. That should bring a harvest 2nd week of October which would be perfect before I get into full blown hunting mode for 2 months.
It's a vicious cycle of never ending rewards.
Hopefully ( pretty much counting my eggs in the basket before they arrive) I'll be sharing some fish pictures from the adirondacks starting Friday.

I took a break at lunch today and my daughter and I went up to the baseball field behind her old elementary school and picked a quick half gallon of mulberries.  One bush/tree 1/2 ripe, one 1/4 ripe and the other, small one, about 1/3 ripe.  Two of them are more trees, than bushes, over 30' tall....laid an old blanket on the ground under the branches and just shook.....eazy peazy....kids have dek hockey tonight so I'll throw a cobbler in the oven tomorrow afternoon....
If you have any mulberries nearby, at least here in western PA, them seem to be starting to ripen.
I'll scout out the woods behind the dek rink tonight.  I picked several gallons of blackberries and black raspberries back there last summer but, it was later in the year...

Strawberries coming in strong- now If I can just keep the neighbors darned crippled chicken outa them  lol.
She is loose all the time, kinda limps around  and follows me around the yard like a puppy.
Every Am when I look outside she is waiting on the porch for me to come out.
He has to leave her loose because of her handicap -all the other chickens peck the heck outa her in the pens.
Guess some berries arent too high a price for a friend like that----

Confirmation on chicken killer. Neighbor saw a coyote with a bird today. Guessing it was a leftover from last kill as mine are all there. He got a shot at it and wounded it.

We must have a lot of coyotes around here also. I never see any bunnies or ground hogs. Hope your neighbor got a good enough shot on em, Clint.

Seems like none of my hill stuff has flowered yet. I might have a couple on my pickles but that's it. No zukes, squash, cukes ect ect. Should I be panicked? The plants are really big. Huge, green leaves and very large stems. Any thoughts?

Too much nitrogen can do that. Have you fertilized or used manure.? If not wait it out they will come

Sheep manure. Oh well, atleast my tomatoes are going berserk. What should I add next year, since this year is probably a check in the loss column for those plants?

I did some reading lastnight about what can be done for too much nitrogen. Seems like I'm late for any remedy this season. Kinda makes me mad, but as they say .... live and learn. Adding mulch around plants helps to leach the access out. Also over watering can be useful. I'm gonna wait and see, maybe they will flower and fruit.

Check the PH, chances are the manure lowered the PH (too acidic) and needs to adjusted.  Baking soda is good for raising the PH.  Epsom salt might help too.
Fresh manure, unless mixed, is too strong.  Make a compost with the fresh manure, leaves and grass clippings along with household waste (egg shells, vegetable and fruit skin, coffee grinds, etc).

Re: The garden thread 2021/06/20 11:04:59 (permalink)
We bag a lot of chicken manure (use sand in coops, so sifted manure is pretty clean) and give it to some of our gardener friends with the advice to dump it in an unused corner and let it sit for a season before use to let it "cool down".  All manure is not created equally so do a google check of the basic characteristics of whatever critter waste you have access to in order to get a handle on how you can expect it to behave and what you may do to mitigate any problems and get the most benefit from it.

Whew. Turned off the news and played in the garden of Wilmington.
Caught lots trout, all browns and mostly stocked with a few backwater chunky butters. Took 5 pictures all weekend from Friday 6am until Sunday 7pm. Your looking at them now
Pretty sweet to get away.
Here's a perspective of my tomatoe boxes planted week apart. The one has chicken poop and straw as bottom layer before soil.
I just put a topcoat of compost ( fish, blood etc) on the runt box.
Garlic is cranking and ready in about 3 weeks.

My family went and picked a ton of strawberries for free at farm Monday. Soooooo many, like you.
They been making jam, jelly and we froze a bunch.
I'm sure you animals will enjoy them before they rot on the vine.
But I hear about the so much to do, so little time.
Stay healthy

So I am tired of not being able to participate much since my injury/surgery so I got my hubby to help me fashion a sling for my leg/cast on the ranger. Amazing what you can come up with when you have a little goat wire, old ratchet straps, and duct tape. Worked great though. Was able to take the Ranger with a pull behind rough cut mower deck over to the farm and take care of a few acres of barn pasture. Had lots of moral support since my 2 old dogs were along to teach the new pup how to be a good "farm dog".

Yep, easy perma boat driver....I'll work the back of the boat with your hubby....and I'll pitch in for gas, clean the eyes and clean up the boat at the end of the day!  All in a days work....(did first mate for 3 years when I was in HS and college for my summer job).  Just sayin'....
Oh, and if it is safety you are worried about, wrap that puppy with some closed cell foam, tape it up and at least your leg will float if god forbid you need to abandon ship....

The garden and farming is difficult work, having bum wheel sucks.
I hope it's getting better every day.
While I miss my animals and vegetables, this week is about chilling.
Life is as good as it gets.
Shindig at my house Sunday.

Thanks guys, hope to be getting on the water once the cast is off and I am into the removable boot. Have just been super cautious till that next xray says the bone is tight around all of the hardware the doc put in.
Hoping to have a lot of fishing opportunities after that. If someone wants to 'farm' some eyes out of Erie later in the summer I hope we can make that happen!

HT, glad you are enjoying the down time! You certainly deserve the break. Good luck on the sea harvesting!

My clamming partner has been awesome. Sleeping together in the tent while rest of crew is in RV.
He's been getting right up to hit the 7am low tide and we're done by 10AM.
A good 300 in cooler. Heading to lobster boats in a few and gonna be good eats tonight. Hootenanny on Sunday.

I'm on charlestown/ westerly Rhode island area. Ocean temperature probably high 60's . Bay clamming area is bathwater until tide comes in.
Thing about here, beaches are sandy and areas are very clean. No seaweed or trash.
Staying at Burlingame state park.
Park is awesome but knowing the sites is key. Many are good, some are fantastic and there's definitely duds. 786 sites

For us , this is kinda farming. I've pulled a rake through more sand in 4 days than I do in 4 years in the garden.
All about the harvests of fresh foods .
This morning's 2 hr haul went well.
Cooler is getting pretty full.

This morning was the last day of harvest. My little buddy did fantastic in 1hr tour.
In 4 days we easily harvested over 500.
The rest of week is just chilling and relaxing.
