I've never kept track but guessing it be a good 4 dozen. I'll confirm tomorrow
Ps. We just ate a dozen bought yesterday from my wife and its AWESOME !! No need for butter

It has been raining off and on hard at times since 1200. Corn is starting to tassel and summer squash are starting. Blueberries by next week. My newest strawberries are looking good for next year. I will harvest my garlic next few weeks and see how it turned out. Potato bugs are as bad as usual. I went fishing last week to onieda last week, but got skunked as usual

Good to hear from you Clint. Hoping things are well.
Crappie, believe me I don't get out much myself but do keep in touch and support local folks.
We just finished making 15 braid bunches of garlic that is secured for sale to our community friends that requested them.
3 bulbs per braid. It worked well for everyone. I'll offer some single bulbs as well for those who want.
My daughter's homemade, homegrown sauce is also in high demand.
It seems the garden is working out.
These are dried garlic braids I did 3 weeks ago. My wife's look much better at the braids

HT I'm trying to get some rain to ya. Still some left in the system that passed through my neighborhood.

🌧☔🤞🏼

Thanks HT yea day by day for me. Lots of med changes, but overall I think am doing ok. I would guess 1.5 inches from this system for us. Now if we could just keep 1 soaker week coming. Woodchuck problem in lower garden and everything is gone except the onions and taters. Got 1 chuck with the .223 but the other is more stealthy. Good thing that garden is mostly pumpkin and gourds for winter chicken food, but still makes me mad.

Clint nice to hear you are getting better.

Ground hog problem sucks though. .223 makes for quick work on the little rascals. Few years back I bought a 'varmit' gun chambered in 5.56 but shoot .223 to slap woodchucks upside the head. Been nearly two years since I started a new life and ain't shot a 'chuck' since. Reminds me, I need to get my 5.56, .17 HMR, and 22 mag to a gun store.

HT... I see my neighborhood frontal system fizzled overnight. Did you get any rain at all?

My wife’s cherry tomatoes has an abundant first harvest. She is down to about 5 left. How long will it take the plant to re-blossom?

I will revamp my figure for rainfall. 3 plus inches according to the buckets outside. Dar that all depends on the type of tomato. There are 2 types determinant and indeterminate . The later will continue growing and flowering the former has a set number of blooms. Which is 1 to 3 per leaf . Indeterminate are usually viney. That does not mean you are done you may have some non opened blooms.

The tag said they were Bing Cherry tomatoes. No idea if they are determinate or indeterminate.

I hope they blossom again because they were great.

Picked some green peppers and semi-hot zizzler banana peppers last night, cleaned them out, stuffed them with some sweet italian sausage then put them in the min-roaster with some of my homemade stewed tomatoes.  yummmmmmm.....put a little mozzarella and parmesan cheese over them when they were done.......first couple of the zizzlers I picked were mild but this batch had a good, flavorful heat.  Got your attention, but faded fast.  Even my wife was eating them....They will make good dipping peppers for canning when I get enough for that.

So, basically, they are done?

If the plant is at mature height they are probably done or close to it . They will not keep growing and set new buds They have a "set amount" and thats it. You may get a few mire from late buds but nothing close to the first harvest

Re: The garden thread 2020/07/13 20:36:53 (permalink)
Looking nice Clint. I also love my 36 mile 1 way to work. My wife sold 100 of our garlic bulbs already. We picked 212 seed and saleable out of the 275ish I planted.
I already talked to a local garlic farmer and pre bought 8lbs of seed garlic ready dried in 3 weeks. I will also have seed garlic from mine which are huge and way better then expected. Of course I'll have everyday use also. A lb of garlic seed should yield 40 plants. Do the math. A 50 or $100.00 investment equals a 3 plus fold return. There will be no garlic festivals this year so things might be hit and miss depending on internet sales. Right now internet sales are hopping because people are getting more into trying to self sustain.
We finally got a date for the cow to be butchered. 9/8. Pigs got moved up to 8/4 which is fine, they are plenty ready at about 160 now.
Next chick batch arrives 7/28
Super busy here but we are going to make some time to do a drive in live band concert in 2 weeks. Not ready for the club scene but sure ready to dance to live music, even if it's in the bed of my truck.

Re: The garden thread 2020/07/13 21:40:26 (permalink)
So the way I look at my garlic is like this from small to seed.
The smallest I'd grind to powder or single use. Next size I've seen sold but I'd only sell 1 of that size in a braid of 3. Following, is the sale size which gives a nice amount for a frequent user and remaining cloves will store well properly.
Largest is my personal use, mainly seed for this fall. I would plant my sale size but I prefer to plant or buy my seed size. And the pictures don't due justice.
I'm finding garlic is super simple to grow and the rewards are great, as is herbs and tomatoes.

PS: Clint, we make 80 plus quarts homemade sauce for personal use.
We are also looking at offering jars for sale.

What's the going price for a braid or 3 sale size so I don't under sell myself? I may up my production if I do ok. Your right easy and pretty low maintenance

Re: The garden thread 2020/07/13 22:45:13 (permalink)
I pay $12.00 a lb which is 5 or 6 seed bulbs
Remember though, each seed lb is 40- 50 plants. At any supermarket, you'd pay $1.00- 1.75 for junk imported garlic.
A local grower would sell at in house about $1.75. Per ( my second size). If the local sold a farmers market, they be anywhere from $1.75 to $3.00 each.
Usually at a festival, it starts at $2.50 each.

To answer your question. I'm a braid of 3 for $5.00 or $2.00 single. I'd probably do 3 for 5 anyway but some think they only just want 1 bulb and end up buying 3 single after anyway.
So just figure if you invest $12.00 and get $80.00 back, I'd do that all day, any day.

Sound good and that's what I was planning. Also a bit of reminiscing here, a five spot is now spent like a buck was spent when i was a kid. Dollars are like quarters and change although necessary has no real value to folks anymore other than exact ,and well, change. Vending and parking now take cards and are over a buck anyway LOL.

Everything looks great Clint. Great job!! I'll plant garlic this fall for the first time. Nothing like what you guys do, but enough for home use. I have to agree on the store bought stuff. It isn't any kind of quality. The wife uses garlic every Sunday for The Sauce. Im sure I'll be asking for some pointers when it comes time. Before Columbus Day, correct?

As far as everything else goes, I have tons and tons of green tomatoes, cant wait till we get canning. Nothing beats home jarred as opposed to the store bought. Already been picking peppers, cukes and zukes for couple weeks now. My only complaint is that cheapo fabric suxs. Eh, get what you pay for...

HT,
Do you grow your garlic in raised beds? I usually get mine from a guy up the road but may try to grow my own this fall.

My tomatoes are going crazy this year most are 5' plus and have gotten so heavy I had to stake the cages.

Pens, yes I usually plant the week of or just after Columbus. I'm at hunting camp Columbus weekend so I shoot for having everything planted by the following weekend. Make sure your soil is loose and any supplement nutrients are tilled in . Plant 4-6" spacing and space rows about 6" apart. Top with straw and good to go.
We also have tons of green tomatoes. I planted 88 plants. About 40 are Roma to add thickness to sauce and the rest area better boy so we get quantity out of the sauce. All ingredients, peppers both jalapeno and bell, garlic, basil and oregano come from the garden. Only thing we buy is onions although might have to buy some peppers this year as mine are growing very slowly.
Last year we ended up with 89 quarts. This year's target is 100 quarts and we will mix some into pints because a pint size works better for pizza sauce.

Good luck and watch that garden grow.
Ps. Haven't gotten any rain here since the little we had Friday- Saturday morning.
DRY !!
