I whack em and gill em with the scissors. Those fillets come out very pristine after they bleed out. Thinking about taking the girls out today. Kinda windy and a little chilly right now. We'll see. Let yinz know if we go.

yes with some of the stupid rules the fish commish comes up with , they really need to fix the lighting rule on nonpowered craft, someone is going to get killed you cant see them at night, and there is just so many of them out there anymore, and they have no common sense

Why is it not a rule that ALL craft need lights at night? It's only common sense.

Small crafts must have lights too.

7A...... 7C

I read "any" boat "anchored" must display an all around white light positioned 1 meter above the craft.

While underway (includes drifting)
Manually powered craft and sail boats less than 7 meters only need carry a handheld white light "ready" to be displayed in time, to avoid a collision.

When I used my kayak at night, I built my own white light that attached behind me at about 4’ above the water surface. Other boats definitely saw me, seeing how they approached around me. I have no idea how you could get away with a handheld light while paddling.

You installed a light because you have common sense.

My favorite part is, the law prohibiting the use of spot/docking lights while underway.

Granted, a fixed light on the bow of a boat doesn't do much good pointing toward the sky at night but there are self leveling style lights that maintain a beam horizontal to the water, no matter the angle of the bow.

ummm a bow angle within reason I should say. Given the doorknobs who have no idea of properly loading a boat and their boat moves through the water at a 75 degree angle. 😋

Yeah, I don't really understand the spot light being illegal.  It is annoying fishing a spot and someone spot lighting you though.  You see there are navigation lights in that area, no need to spot it in people's eyes.  I am just fine with a head lamp for docking and navigating around brush while fishing.  I use on my GPS while under power at night.  That and relying on other boats being lit.  I get a little annoyed with people in my boat that try to use their head lamps or spot light while we are moving.  It drowns out other boats navigation lights.  Which might be why it is illegal?

Pork I agree with (intensionally) spotting other boats. Should be illegal but who am I kidding. That requires enforcement personnel being on the PA waters.

The reason for not allowing such lights while underway, is the "docking light" on the front of your boat, blocks other boats from seeing "your" navigation lights.

That is straight from the horses mouth, as he handed me my warning.

heh hehh, dam my luck, I was trying out my new GoBee remote bow light when a nice waterway patrolman from Ohio was working Pymy at 10:30 PM one night a few years back. oops.😣

Never got stopped on Shenango after dark and I did find it being an advantage, while zooming to and fro with the big horse.

Good luck when ya can get out.

I'm gearing up, for some surf fishin in a few months. Thank you very very much.

Stay safe & be well.

No doubt on the intentional.  Although still kind of sacks when it isn't intentional and catches you in the eye.  Usually you see them spotting first and know to look away when it appears to be heading your way.  Every so often you get the surprise spotting, not knowing they have one and turn it one while you are looking and wondering "what is this dill hole doing", then blow...  Blinded for the next 2-3 minutes.

Where are you heading for the surf?  Covid has had my surf fishing locked up this year.  Still bummed about missing FL and had multiple work trips cancelled to NY and NJ shores.  By the time they are ready to meet, the spring runs will be gone.  Many of the beaches were shut anyway.  I am doing SC in August.  Hopefully these protests don't have Covid making a much sooner than predicted second wave and end up canceling that trip too...  Too far off on the calendar to really be getting psyched about and how bad it felt getting the FL trip cancelled after hyping myself up, I am going to take this one a bit easier.  Got to think fresh water until then and focus hype there.  Stupid weatherman has not been making it easy though (tonight being case and point).  Not sure why he can't have the storms while I am working and clear when I am off?  The weekend cold fronts are nice to get stuff done around the house and not sweat out of every pore, but it seems to give even the dumb fish lock jaw.  Not really happy there is another this weekend after busting my tail last weekend.  Like everyone, there is always another task to get done around the house, so likely what this weekend will bring too.

Pork it really sucks you had to miss out on your surf fishing. It's no secrete, your love for casting from the sands.

Hopefully, next year you will benefit from the lack of fishing pressure, this year.

Our preliminary plans look to be a trip down the east coast through Florida and back around the Gulf shores to 'bama.

Like you, we're trying not to get overly excited.

I know the feeling about the weather forecast. Today was a promised fishing trip and boat ride for the daughter of my wife's nephew. We couldn't make her birthday party so it was a promise to fish and let her drive the boat.

Thunder is rumbling as I speak but even though I know she understands, I fear disappointment abounds. Good thing is, she knows there's always tomorrow and good things do happen. I'll make darned sure they do.

Did the fog get heavy enough to ruin the fishin on Arthur last night? It was lookin pretty misty as we headed home. Lots of folk still fishing, some pullin planer boards but I don't know if they was catchin. More boats going into South Shores then was leavin.

Startinout good for you. Heck just getting on the water that time of day would be nice.

I didn't fish, just snooping around the 528 and 422 launch ramps.

Went out Friday. Beautiful night with water temp in low 70's. Lake high and water was cloudy. Set up in Trout Cove then moved to the back of the island by the marina.

Catfish, catfish, catfish! All nice size too. Kept two for the fryer. Caught a few bass on cranks early in the night including a hawg of a smallie.

Wipers? Alewives popping everywhere, striper slamming alewives popping everywhere, striper laughing at me while they slammed alewives popping everywhere. End result: No striper.

I need a new hobby.

Someone must have reported catching where you were. We passed by you all around 12:30 to call it a night. There had to be 10 boats with you guys. I got a 25” and 21” wiper a nice channel cat and a yellow cat. Couldn’t buy a crappie bite in the evening though. I love when the water is higher for night fishing. Wish we would have stayed out longer. They just seemed to be turning on when we left. But getting home any later would have had me a complete zombie.

There were a ton of boats right around the island. We were set up away from everybody else along the treeline closer to the marina. I hate fishing on top of other people. I may have screwed myself from the sounds of it if you say the were catching.

No idea if they were catching.  We just drove by and figured that some Facebook group or other mentioned the island having fish.  The other island on the shoals gets even worse.  I have passed by there before and could swear that there are 20 boats tied together.  Looks like a Christmas tree with all of the red and green lights.

Not going to say that I go where no one goes, but usually have a good 50 yards between boats.  But every 3-4 times out, there is that guy that will pull within 20 feet.

There's a guy livin' in Gods' Country, in proximity to Lake Arthur, Pymatuning, Shenango, and Wilhelm, and a host of smaller lakes. Some of the best fishin' we could ask for. Former fellow OTR Trucker, fellow fisherman and neighbor, and all around good guy. And now he's gone and sold his home and his boat. What? Wait! HIS BOAT!!!!! Oh, the humanity. I think he has become an "RV Specialist" and surrendered to the Deep South.

Yep I did... I sold the boat. Time to pack it in. Wife and I been spending time visiting our favorite spots we've come to enjoy over our 46 years together. Some like Arthur, Tamarack, Wilhelm, Shenango will likely be seen, for the last time.

Time to move on and see what's to see and maybe fish by the sea where too I shall not catch, them stupid fish.

But fret not, for through the miracles of the internet... it'll be like I never left. 😜

Thanks neighbor. 🍻

I've watched a lot of fishin' shows and though the elusive walleye is my preferred target fish, if I had the jing and a weeks vacation to spend on the Gulf, I'd like to hook up with a few of those monster Redfish. Seem like really good fighters, and everybody raves about a "blackened redfish dinner". Awesome fish! Wishin' you and yours good fortune, BT.

mitch cost of food and housing and even a fishing license isn't really expensive along the panhandle into "bama.

Unfortunately, the dadburn transportation will knock the heck out of your budget if you fly into Pensacola.

Having somebody ya can share driving with, would be the way to go. Two people should be able to drive it in one day. Of course, there's the coast to coast coffee and ya can drive down and back, by yourself... in the same day😳.

13 hours, 850ish miles from Grove City to Floribama. Buy a combination saltwater license and fish both states.

May looks to be the beginning to good times and tightlines in both states.

Thank you for the flowers driver. 🍻

I mean its not the Gulf of Mexico, but you can catch some big ol' Redfish in NC. The Neuse River is famous for giant reds, but where we go for vacation near Wilmington, we got into some nice reds on the Cape Fear River. They are a blast to fight.

They can be caught up past NJ too.  Not in regularity, but I caught one about 10 years ago in Lavallette, NJ.  Much more common the further south you go.  A good bit in the VA Tidewater area.  World record was caught in Avon, NC - Hatteras Island.  If you are looking for bull reds from shore, I am not sure if there is a better place than the Buxton Point in May, a few miles south of Avon.  It is a crowded conga line and the locals will throw you in with the sharks if you are using braid and try to join their line.  Pound for pound, they would whoop any freshwater fish's rear.  Not sure how they compare to permit, cobia or amberjacks in the salt.  They all have pretty good reputations of pound for pound power.  I've caught yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi and a sailfish before.  All were ridiculous fighters, but the off shore gear strapped in a fighting chair, is much different than rod in hand from shore or inshore boat.  I did fight a nice mahi mahi on a lighter rod on one trip.  Kind of a bummer taking 15 minutes to get the thing in, while my buddies using the heavier gear were decking fish after fish.  But for anyone that has ever done the mahi mahi thing, many captains try to keep a fighting fish close to the boat.  It drives the others into a feeding frenzy.  That was his way of doing it and sort of fun, for the first 5 minutes...

But yes, I would trade the local fishing scene for what you can find in the South in a heart beat.  With the bonus of no winter!!!  Although, 6 months of temps near 90 would definitely be something to get used to.  So, basically for 6 months out of the year, fishing and most other things, are reserved for early mornings and late evenings.
