I fished Muddy Crick yesterday after fighting my boat for a few hours prior to the maiden launch of the year.  Which is a huge reason why the maiden voyage only happened in April.  Got a few hours of fishing in, but not much catching.  Did get 3 crappie and 2 perch.  Which was about 1/10 of the catching of my last trip out, but still something.  They are there and they will bite, if the the switch is on (at least seems to be the case with spring panfish for me).  I spent an hour trying to see if I could get some wipers moving, but no action.  Then settled into the panfish.  It just didn't go on for me.  2-3 hours seems to make a huge difference.  Last time out, barely a tap for the first hour, then switch went off.  Not much difference in presentation or anything.  Non-stop action for about 3 hours.  Then switch went off and could barely buy a bite after.  Yesterday, no switch.  But working hard and getting a few fish was still rewarding.  Considering the pain in the rear the boating portion was for me.

Good news is, after 2 pulls, my motor that was giving me heck all last year, fired right up.  Ran like it was brand new...  My bow trolling motor that salvaged last year is on strike now for overwork from last year!  It stopped on me late last year and I was hoping it might just come back to life...  But no such luck.  I tore it apart to see if any loose connections or whatever might be obvious.  I am pretty sure it is the control board.  The turning works, but propeller won't go, just gives a clicking sound at the board.  I bypassed the board and the motor itself runs.  Can't find an old control board online.  Anyone know where to get a 203-4005 board?  Attempting to fix a board is well beyond my caveman electronics ability.

I'll take a shot here and ask is fishing strictly for cats there better in one area or the other? I was told near the breast or the 528 boat launch...shore fishing exclusively.

With the lack of posts on this thread, I suspect the lake will be empty tomorrow?
I need to wash the skunking off from last week.  Embarrassing to get skunked in May!  Double embarrassing having my son with me, who thought that I was a good fisherman prior to our trip...  I am not sure if I can put myself up to the challenge of a Saturday with such nice weather and cabincovid having the place packed.

Please tell me those local kayak outfits have either went out of business or still not permitted to do rentals?  They might be the worst when it comes to lack of launch etiquette.

Made my first trip of the year yesterday, didn't catch the world on fire but did manage a walleye, couple stripers and catfish and lost a few unknowns that were of decent size. Despite the launch area being a zoo, the area of the lake I fished wasn't that bad with pressure.

My buddy and I fished Arthur yesterday from 6:30 am till about 1 pm.
We caught 10-12 Crappy, and  a nice sized Pike.
We also saw a few "Qualified Captains".

This is where DCNR Rangers need to earn their paychecks, and do some education at the ramps with kayakers. PFBC WCO’s can do some helpful education as well.

There was a WCO boat out. Why would you patrol the launches for horse’s rears when you can put the pedal to the metal to stop a guy for standing while driving?

Seriously, we watched while the WCO looked right past a sailboat with half of the people in the water swimming in the middle of the lake, to do a U turn, go from trolling speed to 40 mph on plane to stop a guy that was standing while driving. We were close enough to hear the conversation. Dude ruled and blamed it on his girlfriend being in his line of sight! Ha ha. He got a warning, but if safer to see the 200 kayaks on the lake to stand, why not? Not like doing 40 mph on a wake filled unrestricted lake, yeah, maybe standing could be dangerous. The guy was maybe doing 15-20 and keeping distance from boats, standing was the safer route. And his stupid broad was in his way... She should have been laying down, getting his next rig ready, maybe tickling his jimmy between spots. I really hope that was someone on this site!

I think he pulled me over just to get a good look at my chik. After he got his eyes back in his head, he dam well better only issue a warning. Surprised as hell he didn't come back. As he was leaving I told him he should take pictures next time.... they last longer.

Me and my girlfriend hit Arthur on Saturday. Put in at Mcdanels and headed straight for Dutch Hollow. That finger seems to be great for getting away from the crowds but not much else... I didn’t mark anything on my electronics, it’s a mostly featureless bottom... we were looking for some panfish to put in the cooler but we pretty much struck out. I probably just need to get used to dealing with the hordes of people on the main lake if I’m going to bother fishing Arthur at all.

Gorgeous day to be out tho. Saw a bunch of cormorants on the island. I’ve never seen them at Arthur before. Anybody know if they spend the summer here or were they likely migrants?

I have nearly every DVD from Al Lindners' Angling Edge. One of the things he was discussing with a biologist about in one segment was the cormorant being a threat to fish populations in Minnesota's lakes. They are fish gobbling vultures. Might be ok for shad or alewife over population, but what about the other species that spawn in the shallows? Bad thing is, like the turkey buzzard, they are protected. That can't be good.

Never try to argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Interesting. Apparently they were affected by DDT but they rebounded in recent decades just like osprey and bald eagles. In addition to affecting the fish population, it seems that large colonies can be quite a nuisance because they sh1t everywhere (like Canadian geese).

I didn’t see too many of them actively feeding. There was a flock of maybe 15 or 20 of the crazy looking dinosaur things just hanging out in the trees on the island. I’m guessing they haven’t been regular summer inhabitants in previous years because people would have been talking about it. Might even be a good thing if they thin out the alewives. The lake might also be too murky for them to hunt if they are visual hunters.

I've seen a number of them in North Park Lake in Allegheny County the last couple of years. That's the first time I've ever seen them. Just watching while I fish, they seem pretty aggressive.  I don't see them later in the year. Not sure
if they move around or they are just harder to see after spring

I lived in SC for a while, they allowed cormorant hunting on Lake Moultrie and Marian.  Back in 2014 they killed 11,000 of them.  They are tough on fish populations.

Hit Arthur this morning at 7:30am or so, Muddy Creek side.  I've never seen so many people in my life.  It was like the worst parts of going to a sporting event, plus boats.  Water is still a bit cold but we caught a couple fish.  Everyone who thought Arthur was overfished before this year you had no idea.

Also, if you are one of the 16 jerkoffs roaring your bASSboat down the fingers at top speed past dozens of guys trying to fish... you suck.  Dishonorable mention to the sheer number of "20HP" evinrude/johnson engines out today.  The guy with the 80HP yamaha would have made less wake than you and your flat bottomed POS.

The weather was about as nice as you can ask for on Arthur though.

yeah could not believe the amount of people on the lake for the past couple of months, its a zoo everyday, just people everywhere, kayaks coming by you 5 at a time 30 ft away while your anchored , boats every 100 ft along the bank, really good we got no ice fishing in this last season, because the fish are getting hit hard. and my god people learn how to launch or load a boat in less than 30 min

This is nuts. And response here edited, please read it all.

I spent the day at North Park today. First time since moving from the south side to the south hills. Takes about as long as getting to Artie, so confirms why this was first time since.

But to get to my point...

Regardless of where all of us regular anglers go, Schiltz is getting crowded wherever we go.

Mid week is the new weekend. Weekend is like going to be the Kennywood to fish. Minus the potatoepatch fries.

The fish are biting like they always have on Artie. If you either A) You know what you are doing. B) have a kid that knows what they are doing like Crappiefisher and piggieback off of his skillz. (Lucky bassturd) C) Be at the right place at the right time when they are biting (like me a few times). D) Don’t catch anything (like me most other days).

Regardless. This is insane for pressure on the lake. Coolers might not be filled, but many are leaving with a few. Mine has many times, like it always has.

I hate telling/pleading/suggesting to others while times are tight, but honestly look at it the math. This might get ugly for years...

Guys fishing for food. The state with years of spending Our fish $ elsewhere. State going into debt like never before. Who honestly thinks things are going to come out favorably?

I for one am going to do a bit more C&R. I am in no way a conservationist I always love a fish fry. For those like me that like a fry, one or two (or more) less fries this year, might help for years.

Reminds me of the good ole days.

Family and friends getting together for a day on the water. Says to me, just how disrupted family life has become over the years. Interesting, we still have our 'puters & electronic games but yet we see so many enjoying the outdoors once again.

So long story short, are electronics the real reason for such a drop in fishing & hunting activities we've witnessed in the past 20+ years?

Granted, back in the day, the doorknobs zooming around were few and far between, as compared to what we see today but I will say, where permitted, sail boats made up the difference.

As for over fishing.... mmmm, there is that, over population stunted growth thingy so perhaps, in the long run, maybe could be, a good thingy???

Anyways, here's to all y'all having a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.

🎣Good times and tight lines.🎣

I'm still dumbfounded on why they wouldn't adopt the panfish enhanment rules? Its at Pymie and Shenago. It has taken years for the Crappies to make a strong comeback at Moraine, this "perfect storm" could be a huge setback to that progress. We did really well early in the season, so my boat hasn't seen water for about 4 or 5 weeks now. I'm not going until its time to head to the big lake. Walleye fishing should be easier than it was last year, if you can believe that!!

With some counties going green next week and other mostly yellow, maybe people will get back to work sooner than later. That would go a long way in easing pressure everywhere. I just hope its not too late for Moraine, and all lakes for that matter, to get back to some form of normal.
