What happened to negative temperatures yesterday.
50 degrees and sunny today. Having a hard time controlling the heat with doors wide open. Staying warm is one thing but roasting is another on December 23rd
Hope my ice don't melt locally by Saturday.

I heat with my Grandma's pot bellied cast iron stove, I can control heat a lot with how or what I feed it, but other technique is use of a couple of fans to direct airflow into the center of the house or away from it as needed. But neither are perfect so some days are sweat clothes and some days are t-shirts, lol.....

But I wouldn't trade Dexter (model Dexter no.6, Indiana foundry, circa 1915) for anything!

I'm a very mellow laid back person. I love every single one but having 25 people in my house gets kinda crazy.
Time to retreat to the man cave and sip moonshine.
Merry Christmas to all and all a good night.

No snow nor none in sight for at least a good awhile.

I understand the adks now have a good 2-4" white stuff.
As far as snow goes from a sled dragger, perfect.
Things finally took a turn for better last night. Its gonna be short but sweet.
People have been putting themselves and others in danger on precarious conditions.
Hopefully it will not give a false sense of security but enough to keep people safe.

I'm heading to the SR, honestly. Just waiting for those 4 foot snow drifts, lol

No rain please Jack

He's lucky to still have fur

With 60 this weekend they upped the river. With the temps humidity and rain the tug will empty fast. There is 3 to4 inches on the ground and no ice around here

I was thinking about visiting P-town next week.  All I have to do is think about fishing and it rains, or snows or the river blows out.  Maybe I should consider a trip to Australia!

Re:Weather thread 2020/01/27 10:15:07 (permalink)
Was out letting the Pointers run for their morning constitutional on Saturday morning when I heard Canada geese overhead. This isn’t very unusual because they travel close by; use the neighbor’s pond; and there is a federal wetland within a mile. Some are locals, others migraters.

What was odd on Saturday was as the dozen or so (that seems to be about the maximum that flock together around here) climbed to the top of the ridge to the north, they ran right smack into a huge flock of other geese — probably over 100 in number that just popped over the ridge at the same altitude.

The huge flock seemed to really confused by this and started to break into small balls of birds (not unlike bait balls of baitfish), until the V of Canada geese turned another direction, then they reformed, but in a mass and not a V.

It was difficult to tell at the distance and altitude (and with all the honking the Canada were doing), but I think they might have been snow geese (I’m no waterfowl guy, but know enough to be dangerous). If they were indeed snows, that is way early, as they don’t typically pass through my area until mid March.

Maybe an early spring is on its way. I guess only the rodent knows for sure and he isn’t saying anything for about a week.

We have less than a foot of snow on the ground here and its melting fast. I worry a bit about water for the summer. In retrospect I CV would of gotten away without plowing the driveway once this year as most snowfalls were less than a foot and followed by warm weather. Do I mind this weather , not really. Who knows what will come in mid February and early March, but it's down hill from here.

At this point I'm with y'all. Winter has spared me of any snow removal besides December.
Its basically been spring mud season around my house. Great for working outdoors but put a crimp in my hardwater things.
Seems like it might chill a little but we are certainly over the hump .
My water tables been good locally. Wet fall helped a bunch.
Yup , time to think spring and no rain dances

Weather is grim down here. Mostly all rain past few days Manhattan south to lake George. Snow ranges from 10" to 22" there north.
My local lakes for ice are toasted, schroon lake is almost knee deep in snow.
Hopefully mud season doesn't last until July or we get a drought in May.
Big plans starting in April so I'm pretty much ready for this " winter " season to end.

Bummer when you come home to 50 degrees in the house and can only stuff 3 chunks wood in the stove.
Spring cleaning soon..
Stay safe from those ice storms folks

I hope the Adirondacks  don't get record snows in March to pay for what we've missed.  Last year  the stretch of the Hudson I fish was unwadable and a pain to kayak  because they unleashed huge amounts of water from Sacandaga .  I can't believe there's been no laker pictures on here!  Did you go at all  for them, HT,? I usually head somewhere different to fish every winter. I thought about Cape Cod overwintering schoolies, the Swift River in Mass, or the  w. Branch of the Delaware, but grey skies for days drain the life out of me.  Oh well, I dropped  25  lbs. so I can make into and out of the Arizona Big Ditch again.  April 4th we drop over the rim for a 50 miler.  Lee's Ferry and Northern NM for fishing  .  Just have to hope for an average end to this winter.

Fichy that's great you trimmed some fat. This winter I seem to be gaining more. Mostly attribute to the homemade foods we are eating because we seem to be eating more, lol.
No laker pictures because this weather really put me in a fishing funk.
I've fished more in December on local panfish waters in December before the northern laker places froze. Then it became a total washout round here and I got in a lazy funk about driving up there joining the circus on schroon because it was the game in town . Local temperatures in the 40's don't help my desire either so I been cutting free firewood to look ahead.
I went once so far and didn't ice any char.
Now that lake George is drawing the crowds and deeper snow is keeping some home, I'm going to try again.

Just dropped off another load, yup, it's mud season 2020.

I don’t declare winter officially over until I see the red-winged blackbirds in the neighborhood. But spring is neigh. The killdeer returned yesterday. While they do tend to be here for a few snow dustings, it usually isn’t anything too serious because they are ground nesters.

I definitely hear you on spring is near. Unfortunately mud season never really left my place until yesterday.
Its been a polar coaster winter for sure, with more highs than lows.
I fished my local panfish spot 4 times in December. I was able to access it twice since. Once in January and just last weekend.
Temperatures are dropping and its gonna get tighter for this weekend with lows in the singles until Saturday.
This weekend will be awesome with the highs in 40's and hitting 50 on Sunday.

I started some indoors seeds so I'm ready for those redwings to arrive
