Anybody laker fishing yet?

Don't have the finishing touches on the "new to us boat" yet but was wondering if anyone was chasing lakers.  Thought maybe that will be the first thing we do to test everything out on her.  Just replaced the engine, put a new rocker switch board in, new Lowrance elite 9ti, and Garmin Reactor 40 for the kicker should be here any day.

What kind of boat did you buy? I've seen 3 different charter boats Facebook pages update last day or two with photos of some nice Lakers being caught.

I picked up a 1993 Dixie 821 Bluefin that needed an engine replaced.  Got to start with basically a bare platform and set it up the way I wanted.  Only thing that it does and doesn't have is a doghouse for the engine (I'd prefer a complete open floor) and it has a soft top.  Probably build a hard top for it this winter.  I'd love to get up there and jig for some lakers.  That would be a blast.

I know up on the Finger Lakes, jigging for Lakers is very popular. I am not sure if guys on Erie jig when the fish are fairly close to shore. Seems like guys go right out front of Northeast Marina and troll for them. But, I don't see why jigging wouldn't work.

You will start running out of time in the next few weeks....if we get a big warm push. 2 weeks ago was slow, but it has picked up. The lake has been tough for us to get on due to weather, but we have got a steady push of them when we can get out. Most in the mid-range size, 8 to 14 pounds. We have seen water temp at 47, but mostly in the 44-45 range (surface). There are also a few surprises around for this time of year.

They were on fire yesterday, but we missed a ton of hits. We had little to show for the day.

Hot lure has been spin-doctor and fly for us, but we get a little spoon bite. When you find them they are hot, but we have had to chase them around a bit. We run a couple of spoons up high to see if we can locate some pellet-heads, not no luck on that yet.

We get on the mountain top and start in the 45 range, and zig-zag back and forth out to deeper water.

This weekend looks like a bust. Good luck trying to jig for them, they don't seem to be isolated in one place. Ours have been very random, and don't seem to get a second on the next pass. We have been wandering aimlessly in and out of deep water.

To be honest, it is Lake O time if you want a mixed salad. It is worth the extra drive time to head from Olcott and Point Breeze. However, some of these North and Northeast winds have been trouble for pushing fish west.

My experience anyway, take it or leave it.

Thanks,  Probably going miss out this year.  Looks like a couple weeks until we're ready to go.  Still waiting on the Garmin Reactor 40 to be shipped.  They only released 33 last friday.  Hoping one is going to end up at the supplier I bought from.

I think you might be able to fish for them again come late fall

Still plenty of Lakers around if you want to catch some. Surface temp was 43-45° this past Saturday. Landed 11 fish in 60-80 FOW fishing a 1-2 line spread. We usually catch them off North East until surface temps are 55°+, which is around Memorial Day.

Ok.  Thanks.  Still trying to get the boat going.  Got a guy that sent us some bad parts so we finally decided to just go a different route and take the loss of almost $200.  BTW.  Don't buy from Industrial engine in Canton Oh.
