Got into the Hybrids this morning, boy are they fun! Keep forgetting how good a fight they are. My arm is very sore from all the casting & holding rod. What works best for muscle/joint strains? Between bicep & forearm might put me on DL for awhile.

Those tournaments are another good reason to never fish that end of the lake.  Though they've started running them at Bear Run also.

They all started at McDaniel's.  About 20 of them went by us.  2-3 followed well behind, going my speed...  I didn't realize a 16'-17' boat with console, two guys and gear, could go that fast with a 20HP?  Most of what I have read on this board, have said they can't get their Tracker console's on plane with a 20HP.  I'd imagine only 10 minute shoot from McDaniel's to 528 Bridge if you can get to 20MPH.  It would take me 1/2 hour.  Don't get me wrong, I can see a 16' aluminum tiller boat without any floor boards getting that sort of pace.

You are joking.  McDaniel's?!?!  So if you happened to be fishing the island at start or check in... you are just eating mad waves.  I can't imagine they slow down for anyone, but hopefully some of them do.  The engine thing is its own thing.  My 20, which is really an 18 I think, is stickered 9.9 because some bass_hound didn't like the rules on whichever lake he was fishing.  Nobody cares about the rules.

Believe me. They had no problem waking every boat around yesterday. Even in Dutch where we wer trying to hide, this Tracker came flying by. I wanted to say something but why bother? It was nice to hear that motor bog when dude hit that 2 foot of water all the way in the back.

Also. My 20 Yamaha on a 16' Fury , by myself, will get 22mph on flat day. So I can see some of those bass boats hitting well above that.

Basically just a bigger version of my old one but optimized for Arthur. 1648 Luma, 20hp Suzuki, badass trolling motor and electronics. Fish finder has that new-fangled spot lock that enables me to make bait catching a one stop shop instead of thrashing the water all night with my cast net.
Have to make cast netting quick--I don't want Bighead zinging a muskie lure at my cranium!

Wishing all my fellow anglers a good sesson. I have a good feeling about this one.

A young girl caught the 45" & a 42" with shiners, they were the nicest ones I have seen around here ever. The biggest I've caught from Arthur is a 39.5".

After dark tonight the bite was almost dead but daylight was on the gooder side with multi species caught. Good surface action after dark also.

Headin' to Pymy on Thursday for a bit and hope to make it out a couple times.

Good luck with the boat & your fishing adventures sir.

I have a Helix 5 Chirp GPS G2, its a good little unit. But no downscan

But the Lowrance Hook2 5 comes with Chirp Sonar and Down scan for $300.

Can't imagine why you would post asking for gear advice in the LAKE ARTHUR thread.  Unless you wanted to buy one at the lake... which you can't.

Speaking of Lake Arthur... temps still in the mid 50s.  And since it is sleeting on me and 36 in Zelie this morning, doesn't look like we're hitting 60 any time soon.  SIGH.

Starting a new thread is not that hard and will get you a ton more responses. The search function is a gold mine of good info too.
From doing a similar search 2-3 years ago, I found the following helpful when buying and accurate after buying.
Get the largest size unit that you can afford, that has a good rated sonar and GPS combo. The DI or SI is more of a luxury and rarely use mine. Also, make sure the maps of the lakes that you fish the most are available.
Generally speaking, again going off of what I have read, the name brand units are good. Lowrance is a bit more complex to use, but once you figure out, can do more. Humminbird is easier to use, but limited for some that are used to their units doing certain things. I am very happy with my HB 859HD. Although, I wish that there was a temp sensor built in. Likely adding this season. More to post on here, more than anything... I fish when I am able to fish and not really when the temps are optimal. I like fishing then, but often my calendar doesn’t agree.

Porktown... Zelie was that either of you guys fishing just north of the 422 bridge this morning (now Easter Eve) 'bout 11:30 AMish??

Sure hope nobody was on the water in that general area 'bout 7:30 PMish.

Good grief, I was west bound and down 'bout the South Shore exit when suddenly the area is covered in heavy white stuff!!! 'granny' lane is wet but the 'hammer' lane is covered in slush with the shoulder and nearby embankment laidened in white stuff.

I wanted to stop for pics but conditions weren't favorable at the time. Don't know if it was hail or snow.

I hear you DNJ, but at that time, the temp display on my dashboard was reading 46 degrees.

We departed Ford City during a thunderstorm and hit brief heavy rain just east of Worthington but conditions improved to where we were seeing the trailing edge of the system and brighter sky's in the west.

We filled our gas tank, under cloudy sky's, at the Pilot ($2.92 reg) before connecting with I-79 while noting the temps now in the mid 60s.

Happy Easter🐰

Re: Lake Arthur 2019 2019/04/22 14:18:21 (permalink)
I wasn't out on Arthur then.  That same storm system reached us down in Florida on Friday.  Pretty strong straight line storm with 60+mph winds.  Saturday, the winds stuck around a bit and kept us from getting off shore the only day that I did any serious fishing (New Smyrna area).  We hit up the Inter-coastal Waterway and got into some mangrove snappers, sheepshead, jack crevalle, seabass, catfish and a snook (my brother caught it).  A few days prior, we tried our luck at Fort Desoto on the other side of the state.  But same issue with the winds making the Gulf look more brown than blue.  It messed up what was supposed to be Spanish mackerel migration time.  I hit the east side of the island in the bay to avoid the winds, but nothing biting.  Saw a bunch of fish cruise by, including a good 30+lb ray chasing something.  I fished a pond down there too, had a few bites, but no takers on some flukes.  Nice to be in the sun, but lacked the amount of fishing that I have come to expect during a vacation.

Porktown that is super, you're fishing the "big lake" and in Florida no less. Sucks about the weather and catching though.

I see on "Weather Nation", more crummy weather heading to the Sunshine State.

🍺Here's to better catching🍺

BUT WAIT...... Isn't this "Spring Break" weather?? 👍😎

Wasn't me.  I was in Sin City and it wasn't sleeting anywhere near the place.  My first visit, and I quite enjoyed myself.  Didn't hit big, so no new boat.  SIGH.

Flew back into this rainy BS a few hours ago.  Yay PGH.  :(

Pork - no fishing, no Florida.  You're doing it wrong.

Trust me, I know.  You can replace "Florida" with "vacation", for what we usually do.  We had a free place to stay in Orlando.  Ended up costing us more than a week at the beach, after the ridiculous park fees (for one day).  The wife convinced me that "you have to do this for the kids".  The kids told me after, they would rather go to the beach.  Orlando is just too far to go to the beach for a day.  With traffic, both Gulf and Atlantic side are around 2 hours.  Like going to Erie from Pittsburgh to go fishing.  The drive there isn't bad, getting home all exhausted is rough.  If doing 4 hour round trip, I want to stay the night.  The hour drive home from Arthur is pushing it for me.

I did hit the local community fountain pond too.  Not sure if allowed to fish there, but no signs saying not to (other ponds on the property said no fishing).  Had a few hits on some Zoom Flukes and some Bobby Garland shads, but no hook ups.  Only fished for an hour or so.  First few days, I didn't even know the pond was there.  Then other stuff going on.

We all had fun, but just not what I expect from vacation.  A week off of work and maybe 10 hours of fishing total...  Most beach vacations, I usually have 10 hours in by the end of the second day...  Usually fish for 4-5 hours before most are out of their PJs.  Then an hour here and there through the day.  Always try to catch the evening bite too.

The new Beaglecraft is prepped and ready. The maiden voyage is this weekend. If you see somebody vaguely resembling a sasquatch in an Alumacraft jon be sure to say hi.

Will probably fish Saturday night. Hoping to get into a wiper or some catfish. I assume its still a little early for hot and heavy wiper action?

I'll be out this weekend also.  Haven't picked a day yet.  I know I WON'T be up at 4-6am, so those wipers are safe from me.  If you see the big aluminum blue out there give me a honk.
