Another Burbot Thread
As is the case every Winter, there always has to be at least one thread asking about Burbot fishing haha. So, here it is.
Has anyone been out for them yet this season, or heard any reports? I’m heading up next month with some others in hopes that at least one or two of us can land one, just curious how the bite has been so far.

Who would even fish for a fish called Burbot ? the name sounds bad as they look.........lol

Who would even fish for a fish called Burbot ? the name sounds bad as they look.........lol
Is Eelpout or Lawyer preferable to you? Haha. I’ve heard nothing but good reviews about their meat, supposed to be similar to lobster in taste and consistency. And they’re certainly better looking than Waldos!

Never fished for 'em myself, and don't have any plans to do it, but a week or two ago, the Erie Times weekly fishing report said they were being caught in the normal places.

Never fished for 'em myself, and don't have any plans to do it, but a week or two ago, the Erie Times weekly fishing report said they were being caught in the normal places.

Speaking of Eels ....have you ever caught any American eels while fishing over the years in the Great Lakes ? We caught 7 one night while Salmon fishing at Point Breeze, Lake Ontario. We were anchored in the harbor egg sac fishing at night for migrating salmon. Those big silver grey colored eels were sucking up our egg sacs all night ! Talk about slimy and slippery .....they were protected then but they say they are also good eating. They supposedly migrate from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico area !

I’ve never caught one, but I’ve seen several people catch them out of the three rivers over the past several years. The ones found around Pittsburgh actually spawn in the Sargasso Sea around Bermuda in the Atlantic, and then the young ones run up the Mississippi and its tributaries (Ohio, Allegheny) to feed and grow for 10-25 years until it’s time to drop back to the salt and spawn way offshore. I think they have one of the longest migration routes of any animal.

Never heard of eels in the 3 rivers. That is pretty crazy. I was fishing in the sound behind Ocean City about 25 years ago. Caught a bunch of them. Slimy as heck. Probably 24”-30”. I have used the 12” ones for bait before. Big stripers supposedly like them. I didn’t get anything, except slimy hands using them.

Probably will not fish the Burbot this year. In Canada they are called Ling. My son and I would make an annual holiday trip fishing for them. We fished the pier on south side. It is my understanding the North Side pier can not be fished after sundown, perhaps I am wrong. They taste OK and are somewhat unique. They look like giant tadpoles and maybe they turn into giant frogs. :-)

Well, 10 of us put in 9 hours on the south pier tonight. Total of 12-15 lines in. Not even a Perch lol. I’ll still do it again next year. Not stopping until I get one Burb out of Erie.
