looking for a bow for 11 yr old daughter

Anyone have a used but still working youth bow for sale?  Im on a budget I can't break the bank!  My 11 year old daughter is interested in shooting and I'd like to get her started.  I've never hunted but my cousin is gonna teach her how to shoot.  Thanks!

If you can swing it, the Barnett Raptor FX crossbow is the way to go. Ultra light, adjustable stock, crank pull back device built in. I removed the crank and use the rope to draw it back, to lighten it even more. I can darn near shoot it 1 handed. 330 fps.

Mike, honestly either one I guess. She shot something with a pulley at summer camp and her eyes lit up when she talked about it. So I want to encourage that even though i know nothing about archery. My cousin is gonna teach the both of us some of the basics. Anything you can find for a fair price would be much appreciated. I trust yinz guys not to steer me wrong.

Barrett Vortex 115.00-120.00  top poundage 45 enough to kill a deer with the right broadhead. Add a new arrow rest a decent sight pin. I'd just put one pin on it and sight it in for 20 yards.

Not at all Gene not at all. In fact I actually own one. It seems to be you who gets upset when somebody calls them a gun and not a bow.

    They might as
well be a gun . they shoot a 100 yards just like a rifle. Lets level the playing field and let everyone hunt the rut in PA. I know a lot of guys who would like to hunt the rut with there rifles and get first crack at the big bucks before they all get****stuck and gang green by poor shot bow hunters. I used to hunt with a bow not these modern day guns they have now. Oh did I really just suggest a fair hunt for all.!!!!!!!!

I know you own one. Obviously still butt hurt about something. As far as being "upset". It takes much more than petty crossbow digs to get me upset. I think the digs are funny and worth pointing out as those that make them are often hypocrites when exploring the issue deeper. Not saying you are one of them, though.

Got news for ya. So do compound bows. Anyone that takes a 100 yard shot with either a compound or crossbow better be on their A game.

Also the rut isn't over when gun season starts. I see many bucks pushing does and locked onto does in the 1st week of gun season.

YES... YES, by all means please do level the playing field. Screw antler restrictions and get back to a 'single' day of "antlerless harvesting".

    Ewwww..... I didn't say that, did I??

I saw a show featuring a prominent bow hunter (don’t recall his name because I don’t follow the shows, was just flipping through the channels. — presume he is prominent because it was his show) who shot a kudu at a ranged 104 yards with a compound bow.

Now, he said he practiced a lot at 100+ yards, so it can be done.

But it begs the old question, just because you can do something, should you?

And I think that it promotes that because he can do it, any nimrod can. Or if he can do it, any nimrod can do 3/4 or 1/2 that, which still probably isn’t true.

The same goes for the crossbow commercials that show 100 yard capability.

The poster formally known as Duncsdad

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Watch a Nightforce commercial and they make it seem like anyone can shoot deer at 900 yards with a rifle.  I hate the advertising that is out there. Compounds, crossbows, rifles, broadheads. People buy into it and make lots of assumptions and decisions based upon what they see or others tell them.

Here is the 100 yard drop from a plus 400fps crossbow shooting 100 yards. Does anybody think that shot is a good idea under most circumstances?

Final word on the matter-if anyone in the western Pa area comes across a used bow that might be decent for an 11 year old to learn to shoot targets on, fee free to pm me. Thanks yinz.

FISHER, Where are you located ? See my post on national hunting & fishing day. We are having a open house this Sun. from noon-5pm We have a husband & wife team of instructors that run a shooting class for kids that are going to be there with some bows for kids to use.I don't know what they have but your daughter can at least try these & Jim Or his wife may be able to point you in the right direction. We will be having free shooting for kids. Also we had some free used compound bows that we will give to someone if we still have them, but I think that they were too big for her. You can look up the address & phone number on the web. (www.irwinsportsmans.com)  or you can p.m. me.  sam

fisherofmen, Sorry I got your thread off track. I’ll delete it if you want me to.

I also looked thru my extra stuff and don’t have anything at the moment that would fit her. I must have already gave away the youth bow I had. I’ll keep my eyes open and if I find something I’ll let you know.

I shot more than most with a bow and a cross bow, longest shot 32 yards compound XI  bow, longest X bow 27 yards. I know my capabilities,on targets 40 yards is very consistent, but through wooded area I doubt I try it. I'm not going to ruin my season wounding a out of range buck I've invested my time into. Gun hunters definitely wound more deer than archers. Don't know why we as hunters can't stick together no matter what weapon use choose. I've killed plenty of deer with stick bows, compounds,X bows, flintlock, pistols, inlines, shotguns and rifles. All good to me.

Dave he sure did start something. 😐 Fish's question started a bunch of memories for me. Taking me back to "Smoky Wagners Archery Shop" in Oil City waaaaay back in the early 80s and seeing the look on my son's face while Smokey measured him for his Fred Bear compound bow.

Smokey was a staunch supporter and I believe hunted with Fred Bear.

Still have that bow and a ton of memories. Including some great stories by Smokey.

My first immersion in an archery shop was Nelson's Arrows in Carbon (near Greensburg).  Couldn't believe my dad was taking me to check out compound bows, after I had proven to him my proficiency with the stick and string he bought me a couple years before.

It really wasn't much of a surprise, though I pretended it was, to unwrap a new Hoyt on Christmas Day in 1990.

I sold that bow to a young man who was around the same age I was when I got it (wish I hadn't but I needed to give up archery for awhile when the kids were little, and we really needed some money at the time).  He ended up working at a local archery shop, and sold me the bow I bought my son for Christmas a few years ago, and he still has that old Hoyt.

I texted FOM (we're kinda pals in real life) and told him he ought to take his daughter to a local archery shop.  If they don't have something for her, I'm sure they know someone who does, or someone who would know someone who does.  Plus she'd probably love the experience.

I have a Black Hawk Archery Wasp recurve bow. These were made in Mckeesport Pa. It is a beginner bow at #28 at 28 inch draw. It only has a shelf to shoot off of and does not have a string. It looks to be a pretty good shape for its age. Looking online it looks like they get about $80 from collectors.

My neighbor found this in someones garbage and gave it to me.

If you have any interest, and are anywhere close to Pittsburgh Airport, you can have it as long as you promise to use it or pass it along to someone else that will.

Actually, if one cares about facts, there is more wounding loss from firearms seasons. Those darn firearms hunters are messing up next years archery season, lol.

I hear about the firearm's vs  archery wounding all the time. Is this your opinion or fact...provide links to study. Every archer hunter I know says "hit one tonight" lol. 50 yrs of rifle hunting and only hit two that I didn't recover ( might have lived). Link pls. FT

Goof grief.... I can not find anywhere on the big game report card where it's required to report "I hit one". Be it with gun, archery, or automobile.

Hell, there are hunters that do not report "I killed.... err harvested a deer" so where shall we find "links" providing actual facts.

Unfortunately, I have no "links" to substantiate my opinion.

    Good memories and happy hunting.

You have one thing right. The wounding rate is higher for archery hunters. But, my comment was regarding wounding loss.
