Gobbler #2

Sometimes it just happens. Opening week has been a heck of a week for me this year. Bird number 2 hit the dirt this morning at 6:45am. Called in two longbeards off of the roost. Once they hit the ground they never gobbled. Took them awhile to work in but they did and my arrow flew true.

Heck of a brush on this guy but he was young. Probably a two year old.

Gene it would be a honor to hunt turkey with you but rest assured, it would be months of rehab before you would even think about venturing back into the woods, after hunting with me.  lol

What were the weight and beard lengths on your big black birds?  Awesome job!

The gobbler I was after yesterday has hens with him and wanted nothing to do with me.   I am going fishing and rest the gobbler for a few days.   Hopefully, the hens will abandon him soon and I can get him to come to me.

I didn't weight them. The first one had sharp 1 1/4 inch hooks and 9.5 inch beard so he was a solid 3-4 year old. Felt like probably #23/24 or so. The second one had a super thick 9 3/4 inch beard but he was probably only a 2 year old as he had candy corn spurs. He was much lighter than the first. Be surprised if he hit #20.

Can’t speak to the ticks while Turkey hunting, but they seem to be way down in my area. Typically a find 3-5 crawling on the Pointer every time I run her, which is basically daily, but this year I have seen a total of two.

Another fine gobbler dpms. You are a hunting machine!

As for the ticks in my area, I haven't been hunting, but while taking the mutt for walks out in the woods this spring they don't seem to have taken the beating from the long winter that I was hoping for. Was late on the medicine for the dog last month and she was covered one day when we came back. One other day I wore just jeans out instead of the pants that I had sprayed, and wiped at least 2 dozen off my pant legs. Starting to freak me out getting into any kind of tall grass when I'm in the woods

Still trying for gobbler #1.  Been foggy here last 2 mornings.  I busted a turkey out of its roost at 11 am.   Fog lifted at 10:00.  Bugger didn't want to leave its roost I guess.
My neighbor had a tick in his leg.  Broke half of it off trying to remove it.   Had to go to doctor to get the rest out.   Told him to get a tick remover off the internet.

I was just driving away from the local sportsman’s club this morning, when a huge gobbler walked right across the road in front of my truck. It was obvious that he knew he was in no danger.

panfisher There is a new product out that you put on the body of the tick like a band-aid,leave a few min. then lift off. They claim that the tick will start to suffacate & then back out & get stuck on the tape.  I would try duct tape first, can't hurt. Might save a few bucks. Also I just read that some-one came out with a preventitive shot that is ready to be tested & hopefully be ready next spring. Between these ticks & now fishermen wearing facemasks & gloves to prevent sun damage it is getting scary outside.  sam

Shot would be a good thing.

On the ticks,  didn't have any stuck in me yet this year(knock on wood).   I treat my hunting clothes with Permethrin.  Seems to be working.

Seems like ticks are heavy around Golden Rod plants and rag weed more than other areas of the woods. My son walked through a patch of Golden Rod last year deer hunting and was brushing off all kinds of ticks when he came out.
