Arthur!

Where is this year's Arthur thread? Anybody catching yet?

Between work, snow and rain have yet to wet the Beaglecraft. Will be at it soon though. If you see a Bigfoot in an Alumacraft be sure to give a wave!

I'm embarrassed to admit, I still haven't wet a line this year...  I was planning to go out a few weeks ago, when it was around 50 and not raining, snowing, ect., but my fishing partner bailed on me that morning sick.  If I were to know this weather were to follow, I definitely would have just ventured out solo.  I might have to put on my December wading gear on Saturday, and go for it.  Not looking like I will be getting much work done around the house in this b.s. weather.  I'm blaming this on how much Auquanet you guys sprayed on your mullets back in the 80s!!!

Taking my boat to a friend's house tonight to pull the big motor and center the Tohatsu.  Then next week going to go buy a new trailer to replace the problem child POS I have now.  THEN I'm ready for a decent spring day on Arthur.  Weather is garbage anyway; cats are still asleep, wipers down deep and scattered, crappie and perch starting to think about spawning.  Probably some pike eating though, if you are into the pike game and don't mind freezing your ballz.

Are we sharing info this year or keeping everything DL?  I can't remember and usually someone who thinks Arthur is a hidden gem will PM yelling at me.  Let me go on the record now: I have never caught a decent fish at Arthur; it is a dead sea.  There, that should scare people off.  :)

Let the season begin!

I tested the waters this past weekend, and got a cold skunking.  Fishing partner got a nice pike.  Not much chewing at all, besides me on some Cal's dusted chicken wings!  Or at least what I was throwing and where I was throwing.  Good to get out, minus the windchill temps likely below 32.  Was nice when the sun was out and no wind.  Yeah right, Arthur, sun out and no wind...  Maybe about 20 minutes of the 4 hours I put on the lake.  Boat ran fine.  Docks were not in, but I believe on the grass at 528, so likely going in this week?

Can't make it out this weekend, but would likely be good times with the crowds out chasing trout instead.

Hope you guys start smackin' em, before I pull out my cast net!  :)  Speaking of which, I need my permit renewed.  If I could consistently catch fish without those things, I'd give up my cast net...  They are candy at times, and I am just fine being less of a man to use them!  Definitely other times, they seem to be more keyed in on plugs, which are no doubt more fun, especially on top.  On the bottom isn't bad, neither is from behind!

I went and told Pork I would be skipping the first couple weekends but I'm off Friday and Saturday looks to be super nice.  I might splash the boat just to test it now that that 80hp anchor is off.

In other more amazing news, my wife said to me "I'm super busy like every weekend this summer already.  You better buy a 1 man boat."  WOOOOOOOOOOO!

Friday looks like the classic Arthur trap day.  Warm nice looking day, but SW winds, forecasted gusts of 25.  Which really means, "you've got to be f-ing kidding me" gusts, that make blood boil!!!  Good day to try fishing Upper 528, if you enjoy things like, falling down stairs or getting the frank and beans stuck in your zipper.  Saturday looks nice right now, although afternoon rain might ruin things.  Hope you crush them.  I am going to be in NJ.  Debating to take my gear, but don't see much opportunity to get out in the weekend schedule.  Will be there in a few weeks that has more potential for some striper fishing.

Man I HATE the wind.  But I know where the pike hang out, so that's tempting.  And I've been seeing more of them in the last couple years.  You have to get lucky hooking them though... those crazy teeth shred mono.  And I'm not too keen on fishing wire since it tends to scare off anything you'd need it for.  But they love to suck down your fatheads.

Re: Arthur! 2018/04/12 10:48:44 (permalink)
50lb mono leader will hold most pike.  I'm sure there are a few monsters in Arthur, but I would imagine would hold up to the 20"-30" fish that are most prevalent.  Or should say 18"-23" that I seem to run into.  Maybe because I use a 50lb mono leader?

20-30 mph SSW winds going up the Muddy Creek valley (wind tunnel), is enough to blow you off of your boat...  I would say that doubling what they predict in gusts, seems to be relatively accurate.  I've been there on days they are calling for 10 mph gusts, and my 2 anchors would not hold.  20-30 mph from SSW in that valley, and you are likely going to see some well over 40, likely some in the 50 range.  From the NW or SE, no issues.  Although 20-30 mph gust are likely still going to whirl in that valley and still mess with you.

Went to the store this morning, and had the car heat runnin... returned home, with the cooling runnin.

Zellie Sam, some Musky guys use 50lb. flora-carbon leaders and there is now wire that you can tie. I've landed a few pike on pre-tied spinner harnesses, which I think were 15 carbon. Still, every now and again, you're gonna get ZIICKK!, and it's gone. Tight lines.

Never try to argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Do you guys find them to be leader shy?  I wonder if I should do something more in the line of 20lb or 30lb?  That 50lb is thick as heck.  I had to resort to it at the beach, after getting a few nice Spanish mackerel and bluefish cut me off of 20lb.  I picked up some 30lb that I haven't used yet.

I've had them slice right through braid, which I was kind of shocked by.  Some how that stuff will not budge using nail clippers, but those sharp teeth seem to go right through.

My son who's caught lots of decent Musky uses 6lb. test with a short 6" black wire leader. He landed a Pymy 40lber on that combo! I prefer around 8-10lb. test with longer heavier clear mono leaders. I'm trying Power Pro braid 20lb. no leader now days. Seen a guy land 3 Muskies near me and that was his setup. Claims he looses very few without the leader gets more takes , made a believer of me that day.....time will tell.

Red, black & silver steel leaders haven't seemed to matter at Arthur for me. Red worked just fine yesterday.

Not a very good evening/night. Wind ended up with none, like glass. Would have liked at least a breeze. Kept a dozen good sz. slabs. Bite purdy much came to a close at dark. Not much surface action after dark other than a few Hybrids.

Condolences to the lady's family and friends if any on here.

Crappy's "not very good evening/night" sounds like a banner evening/night for me...  I love the glass water nights.  Can see every small bite, and not freeze from the wind.  Looks like winter is back for a few days...  You guys and your mullets back in the 80s!!!  Sure, you rock n rolled with a hockey hot rod that always stayed in place, but now the rest of us have crazy weather to deal with.

Didn't get down there until 45 mins. before dark thinking they would hit after dark. I was wrong again! I might hang it up.

Had a 73 Vega my brother & I built,350 sm. block, Hooker headers, tilt front end, high rise manifold, Torino rear end

Had to deal with all the chemical spills & so forth on the river back then plus the "Bell Bottom Blues"

crappy

It's a coming down a heavy snow on Arthur as I type!!!

Yea rust, had mine cut in half and bought a nice one without a title from West Virginia & cut that in 1/2 & welded 'em together  Shoulda just switched the ID tag on the dashes  Had to beat the firewall in with a sledge hammer just to get the sm. block in. They were good for 40,000 miles before the aluminum blocks went bad.

Oh well, maybe get out fishing Thursday for a bit.
