Genesee River

From the Monroe County report on LOU.

"This fishing report was written on February 9, 2018 and includes news from the City of Rochester:

"Public Access to Genesee River at Lower Falls Closed, City of Rochester News Release

"(Friday,  February 09, 2018) – Rochester Gas and Electric has closed public access to the Lower Falls/Genesee River from its Brewer Street Hydro Station due to the possibility of a sudden flow of water. The recent cold snaps followed by historic warm temperatures and snow melt could cause a sudden increase in the river flow from its spill gates.

"The temporary closure is from Middle Falls to the Veterans Memorial Bridge (Route 104 Overpass) at Genesee River (Keeler Expressway). The City has closed the entrances at the top of Hastings Street and the stairs in Maplewood Park.

"Rochester Gas and Electric is installing a temporary dam to help ease the flow of water while upgrades are conducted on the spill gates. The City urges all fisherman and others who access the river via the affected entrances to heed these warnings until river access reopens.

"The Lower Falls access remains closed and likely will remain closed for the rest of February, as the upgrades being conducted by RG&E are not completed.  If the work is completed before the end of February, and water levels remain low, they will consider opening the  Seth Green Access early."

This area has been technically closed since January 12.  I know, because I checked it on Sunday from the Driving Park Bridge, that some guys have been ignoring this, and have pushed through the gate (it may be chained now), but the Power Company is dead serious about the closure and tickets for trespassing issued by either the City or DEC are a distinct possibility, as well as you jeopardize everyone else's continued access when they compete the work, so please heed this and find somewhere else to fish until it is rescinded.  It was sort of moot for most of January as the river was ~8000 cfs, and very turbid, and it will likely be moot in a few days again because we are looking at a pretty long thaw spell coming up, and flow will likely go up again.

This covers both sides of the river, but also be aware that scuttlebutt is that the City has been handing out tickets for trespassing on the Maplewood side, which is posted against entry at all times, even though routinely ignored by fishers, because of the unsafe nature of the old trail required to access the area, and the difficulty faced by first responders if there is a need for assistance.

The river access points remain closed, the company has been unable to complete installation of the coffer dam necessary for repairs to the middle falls hydro station.  They have contacted an engineering firm to determine if access might be safely allowed.  This may all be moot if "normal" spring runoff patterns obtain, as flows will be too high to allow safe and enjoyable angling.
