    Report:
Lower East adks had good ice in areas of pike , walleye and perch. We picked a good sized lake that held all 3. I have fished there many times so knowing the water helped in safety on the ice. Temp was zero at 7:30 am and darn cold.
We spudded our steps and found 5" Ice to be adequate. Fished depth of 5' weeds to 20' drop. Chased flags all day. Mostly perch, our pike and walleye baits didn't get touched.
It was cold !! The ice was growing but whenever the sun came out , some groaning made me pucker. Weather went from fridged to sunny to blizzard to comfortable.
We braved it all and it was awesome !!
I won't be back out until the 28th and hopefully show some trout then .
Like I said, it was good to walk on water again, sadly there was trad**** on another lake in ourarea

Not the way I wanted to start my season.
I might be 1 and done for 2017. I'm not into going to Dr's because they only tell you things you pretty much know. Yup, it's broken, stay off it , blah , blah.
I might not make it out again right now but soon , the fish will fear me.

HT, perhaps a name change to Hardluck is due.  Shoulder, wrist, foot etc., you're almost as bad as me.  Knowing you, you won't slow down, not one iota! Lol  Sending prayers for a speedy and full recovery. Get well soon.

Here's the thing. If I go to a Dr, they will most likely put a cast on and that will probably sideline me from work and the ability to ice fish. Right now I'm taping it up and tying my work boot as tight as i can .
Still working and still able to hobble.
We will see what happens by March when the ice melts.
Your right Gerry, it takes more then a broken bone or two to keep me out

Must be sumpthin with firewood HT.   Out cutting wood the last three days and this morning I find the first tick I've ever been bitten by.  Cute little critters but I still plan to incinerate the little pryk in retaliation for the stinging pain, I experienced after removal.  Get well soon and get them fishin reports back on line.

That sucks, but been there also... keep it elevated and iced (in intervals) till swelling settles, you are probably an old hand at the elevate and ice routine by now though, lol.... my work boots helped a lot (mine was an ankle dislocation/fracture I was able to reduce before my pain receptors in the brain figured out what was going on).
I use vet wrap (available in all sorts of cool colors at Tractor Supply or Rural King)... it sticks to itself and holds tight for a full day, even under work boots, and it can be reused a few times.
    God speed on the recovery!

Thanks so much for the wishes and advice.
I passed on the Dr today. Way I'm looking at it is tightly wrapped and tying my steel toe boots tight from 5am till 8pm is the same difference. It seemed to help as my hobble, drag got less as the day went on.
Once I untied that boot tonight, well. It's time for ice and elevation.
If it were in a cast , soft or hard , my using it wouldn't change but it would effect what I could do. I don't want a plastic bag around a stupid cast as I try to hobble through the snow to get on the ice , lol.

I will try like heck to give another 2017 ice report in 7 days😁

Just keep an eye on it and watch it good. We call ''vet wrap'' Coban  here at the hospital.

It does work well. Just watch yourself for a fever as there are small chances of blood clots or bone infections for unset bones.  I broke a tarsal bone a few years back and it healed fine, saw it on an xray a few months ago for something else

I was walking on some ice today and the outcome was not good. No strength to hold any weight when the other foot slid.
Sorry folks but my 2017 season is over.
    I have 10 days to recover .

Great advice Clint and will try. I am prolonging unlacing my work boots, which I know is not right

Blood clots and muscle atrophy are both potential problems with immobility and constriction. I know having those boots on seems safer, and maybe more comfortable (mine certainly was) but as soon as feasible each day you should elevate it a bit, let the swelling ease and then slip the boot off and swich to using crutches or a cane to get around. Healing will happen, but the more you push the longer it will take. I was young and stupid and did stuff I shouldn't have and it ended up being 6 months before I could walk without a limp unless I was laced up in my trusty work boots. Was a real PITA and in hindsight I should have used more common sense and elevation,... live and learn, I guess, lol.

Also, pain might be a 'PITA' to put up with but it is mother nature's way of keeping you limited until healing happens. Be very careful on any activity when using pain control since it messes with mother nature's first line of defense....

Sorry for the 'mother hen' routine, but I went through many of those mistakes, and an enormous # of joint injuries through the years...I know most heal without expensive or fancy medical care, but not always easy to give them the best chance.

And BTW... look up the use of ginger and turmeric as natural anti-inflammatory supplements. They aren't miracle fixes but I have noticed an improvement with use. The old 'homeopathic' treatments are often overlooked in modern medicine but more often than not there is a strong reason behind their use for so many generations.
I hate taking any prescriptions and wont use pain meds beyond an ibuprofen type if I have no choice, and there are a lot of basic herbal remedies that can help. They may not be an instant fix or as potent as today's pharmaceuticals but I prefer them...

Well there were a few brave souls that ventured out in my area , but it was unsafe IMHO. With this snow it will hurt the ice making. With below 0  forecast for Cuse next week for 2 days we will see what comes of it. May have to try Black Lake

Didn't set the ice on fire but got a few.
Fished the same lake 2 days for gills and perch. The big side hasent froze in 2 years and has the best ice with a consistent 4" black. The smaller shallow side was very sketchy with 6" in 1 place and hit right through with a spud bar 20 feet away.
I'm calling it quits for 2017 as I have to much to do the next few days. I might try and get out on new years day.

    That sounds horrible!!! Just horrible!!

Zip lock sammidge bags work nicely in case your phone goes in the drink with or without you. Keeps the phone floating and working..... unless you forget to zip the bag closed.

I will give you the crazy. Negative temps are no fun no matter the outcome. It's a tough haul getting set up. In a few years I may wait until my siblings have the heat going in the shanty then show up , lol.
If it wasn't for this bum foot, I'd been out there everyday so far. While the temps been sub zero, there has been no wind and bright sunshine.. perfect conditions to ice fish

This is what it's all about for my excitement.
Heavy trout on a short rod.
Hopefully these will be plenty in 2018.
    2016 -2017 were tough conditions .
This fish was from the queen of lakes in N.Y.. 1 of many hats.

We put 3 Lakers on the ice yesterday. I lost 3 more. It was a good shake down for my son and I to get ready for a LONG laker season. Even with negative 18, I was not wearing a jacket once we got the heater rocking in the shanty. All 3 iced fish were from the same hole, the first one we drilled.
    Gotta love the crowds 😁
