Stream Gage malfunction question

So what do you do when you rely on the stream gage and it is no longer functioning?  Any help would be appreciated.

They take them offline this time of year due to potential ice jam damage. Just monitor the forcast heavily. Uncle johns webcams may help you gauge what is goin on.

Wait a minute...I don’t remember them ever “taking the gauges offline” in years past. ESPECIALLY not at peak season-mid November. I could be wrong...but can someone verify/confirm that the gauges are shut off??? There won’t be potential ice flows for quite a while anyway.

Well, don't rely on the stream gauges.

They are a FANTASTIC tool no doubt, and you don't really how much you'll miss them until they're broken. But as said, pay attention to the forecast, rainfall totals, etc. And above all learn the water. Know how long it takes for Stream X to drop after X amount of rain, during the time of year, etc. Goes for anywhere in the world, not just Erie. Been burned many times on streams that don't have gauges, as have many people, all the time. Gotta be willing to be mobile and flexible, and pay your dues.

OR just wait until someone broadcasts the conditions and fish locations to the world on the interwebs But by then you may have missed a good window, but that's on you.

Thanks.  Will keep all that in mind.  Gage is back up today.  Said was equipment failure.  Could be another steelhead sabotage conspiracy.
