New year, new baits

Late last fall I started using a new bait that I won from Fle-fly. It's called the crappie kicker. It worked very well for the whole month of December. Gonna give it a go from the start this spring. Anybody fishing new baits this spring?

Maybe not real new,but I'm having great success on Maki plastics. I've got some decent crappie and some real nice gills this month.  Also love Ratso's. I know this stuff is small but that's what they want right now. It's almost like ice fishing without the ice. Very light bites. The gulp one inch minnows have taking fish also. Nothing new but working well.

Any special color on the gulp minnows? I saw some at GM last week. Still have some money left on my gift card so i'll pick some up to try. I took the boat out on Shenango wednesday to check my new motors out and fished for a while using about 6 diffrent baits and colors. Found the bobby garland baby shads took all the fish i caught, maybe 10, with 2 keepers, 12 and 10 1/2 ". Green was the color they wanted. I fished both deep and shallow and got them right on the drop. Water temp was 47.

If I could only pick 1 color of the 1" minnow it would be the black shad. Although I've gotten great results on all colors the B Shad seems to be the best followed by white

When going through a little of my sons inventory from (packed 10' x 20' storage unit) this week just so much new stuff to us or that we never seen before custom crap. Plus custom molds after molds & hardware to make 'em with. Should be a very interesting yr. testing them. Over 1/2 million jigs alone just for a start too unload.

Depends on the lake my best color is the emeral shiner, but luma, chartreuse work also. I really don't use many real minnows anymore. These are great cold weather baits,my hands don't get cold in the minnow bucket, and several fish can be caught on one bait. The Maki  plastics took more fish yesterday, fishing was slow, wind was bad,it was hard to keep my bait where the fish where stacked on the wood. Ended up with 11 slabs that I kept. Threw back about that many and some decent gills.

New bait for me this summer are called nervous wrecks. These are produced by Pour House Custom Baits. You can check them out at pourhousecustombaits at gmail.com. They've put a tremendous amount of fish in the boat for me this season.

This year I've been trying... minnows.  The ORIGINAL minnow imitation.  :)  Then again you probably catch 10 crappie to my 1 and that's on a bad day for you and a good day for me.  So there's that.

Sam, the reason I catch a lot of fish is because I'll keep changing colors until I find the one or two they will hit consistently. If one style isn't working, I'll change to a different one. I've had numerous baits sitting in front of me that didn't produce a fish. I keep changing until I find the one that will.

Where I fish, a few colors will do for most lure designs. Many lure designs work for most fish species that bite lures as long as the retrieve is slow and slightly erratic; but many other lure designs get few if zero bites no matter the presentation, color, size, etc.  I get far fewer fish using curl tail grubs, for example, versus prong tail grubs like Bass Assassin's Tiny Shad grubs.

Even jig head weight and hook size can make all the difference in certain months or weeks.

I really want to take Chauncy to one of my spots that I KNOW is crawling with crappie and see him work his magic.  I spent hours getting a half dozen off this spot the other day with minnows, and they were even being picky about which minnow they'd hit.  Since he's always busy killing the fish somewhere already maybe I'll settle for BTDT.  :D

Don't make me come down there so you can catch stupid fish while I can not.
