Poor Smallie Fishing
Launched out of Shades yesterday and had ZERO luck. A single drum was the only fish we brought to the boat. Had never been skunked on smallies out there before. Fished hard from 5 FOW to 43 FOW. The water was much greener than normal. Possible algae affecting the fish? Anyone else out there after smallies yesterday? Please PM me if you don't want to publicly post.

Smallies can be tough to pattern on Erie at this time of year.
Did you use your electronics to find structure and schools?

Then why the heck did YOU make a post then? Had the big bad urge to tell us YOU had poor fishing? Why should WE care about YOUR poor fishing?

psu - you must have missed my question in the original post. People like you are very humorous to me. John, I didn't mean to come off as a jerk to you.. was just trying to make it clear for others reading. We used multiple types of electronics, fished previous marks where many fish have been caught, etc. I just want to know if anyone else on these boards was fishing smallies on Sunday, and if so, how you fared. There were a few bass boats out there, and we didn't notice anyone else catching either. I've got a hunch that algae was playing a large part.

Think the smallies were out protesting about the algae bloom. Should be back next weekend.

Smallies have been decent this year in the lake (at least for me, and I'm not targeting them usually). Not a lot of 5 or 6 pounders, but tons of 2-3 pounders. Some days have been better than others, but fishing the break is a pretty hot right now. On rough days with south winds I stay in close and troll or drift for them. Find bait, you find fish. Not that you need any advice......

BTW....I was out Saturday, got a few each (4 on the boat, probably landed 8 or 10 smaller fish). Sunday I went more walleye fishing, but due to the 6 footers on Saturday we stayed in less than 40 foot of water. Found a few smallies in the 25-28 foot range trolling cranks. Most were on the break...

I'm curious, what pound line and methods (flat lines, boards, leadcore, riggers, etc.) do you guys use to troll for Smallies? This is my third season trolling and I've yet to catch a single Bass. Can do decent on them drifting bait and jigging but never trolling. In the Summer I usually WORK 10-40 FOW pretty hard mainly for Drum and White Bass. I've caught just about every inshore species trolling except Smallmouth and Rock Bass, can't figure out why. Using any combination of riggers, wire Divers, boards, weighted and unweighted flatlines. 20-25# mono 30# braid and wire. Anywhere from 1.5-3.2 mph with spoons, plugs, and crawler harnesses. Thanks in advance!

IMHO, the smallmouth fishing is about the same as in the past. Biggest difference is how many pods of fish you might have to leave to find biters. My observation for this year is it seems to be more regular to mark fish on structure which will not bite no matter what you drop on their heads(seems to me there is an extraordinary amount of bait this year, at least my spots) . The old adage, "you never leave fish to find fish" does not apply this year. I've fished line to line and followed them from the bay to the lake just for reference. Yes, we were out Sunday and did well. If your electronics were showing structure and fish and you changed up your presentation, you needed to move sooner. I max out at 15 minutes on a spot without a bite; it has served me well this year.

We were drifting at around 0.7 - 1.0 mph, so we did cover a lot of ground. With that being said, we mostly fished within the same quarter mile radius. Thank you for the reply and info, I'll keep it in mind if we get back on the lake this year. Tight lines
