EHD is back in Pa. and Ohio.

My friend found 7 above average bucks dead in Ohio on his property. And area about 10 miles from my home is getting hit hard, another friend follows his nose and found about 12 dead including a big 10 fifty yards from his stand. Tough blow for the shrinking deer herd.Any other having this problem in your neck of the woods?

Dam that is scary sounding. That's a lot of deer and all bucks too.

Always seems to hit the same areas over and over. SW Pa has a bullseye on it for some reason. So far the farms I hunt have been spared but I expect EHD to find them. They usually get hit when the disease is around. If they get hit again this year, we won't hunt there much at all. In 2007 we lost about 75% of the deer on one farm.

I never really gave it much thought because I usually see doe when I go on my morning hike, usually leave while still dark. But after reading this and spotting about 8 doe this morning and watching them for roughly 15 minutes there was not one fawn with them or anything small enough to be this year's fawn.

CWD and EHD are two distinctly different diseases.

Just thinking some readers might find it interesting with what PA is doing about "CWD" including, the creation of a new position.

Stand-by for a epidemic..... to be announced at a later date.

I got word this morning that my best farm is currently getting hit in Washington County. I knew it would eventually. It always seems to get hit in outbreak years. It may be a tough hunting season this fall for me.

I thought it was linked to unusually hot and dry summers.  Part of the area I hunt in GreeneCo is getting hit.  I am going to take a hike tomorrow and try to assess how bad it really is.  It really sucks to see this.  I remember in '07 how bad it was.  '12 didn't seem nearly as bad where I hunt.

That is usually the case but this year it seems to be very widespread and we have had a pretty wet summer.

Let me know what you find out. I am hearing reports that the areas that got crushed in 07 are seeing it bad again this year. East Finley Township Washington County is getting hit hard again.

I saw a few dead ones along a creek behind my folks(headwaters of Enlow Fork of Wheeling Creek).  I also smelled a few I didn't get to see/ID.  No bucks(that I saw), but I didn't stick around very long.  It is a jungle over in there since Consol bought all those farms.  It should make for some big bucks, but it is going to be very difficult to bowhunt.  You can smell them before you get to them.  I don't know if the dead ones make the live ones more skittish, but I didn't see a single deer out and about at dusk when I took the four wheeler for a ride.  Probably a bad sign.  I didn't get to check the area over by Aleppo that I hunt, although in '07 it was barely hit, and it didn't get affected at all in '12.

Did you see anything this weekend?

That doesn't sound good at all. I talked to a farmer near you and he said he is finding them 2-3 at a time now.

I am headed down Thursday to take a walk. I planned to set a stand for the rut but not sure how much hunting I am going to be doing down there this year, by the reports I am hearing.

Let us know what you find.  It is starting to look like '07 all over again.  Gonna be a rough year on the GreeneCo/Washington line. I am crossing my fingers about my Aleppo property, but not holding my breath.  I might have to try to check it out this coming weekend.  We got really lucky in '07, it was exceptionally bad elsewhere in the county that year...

If I remember right, and this may be our only saving grace/silver lining, is that it started earlier in the summer of '07?  Is that right?  With the next couple of weeks looking dry and unseasonably warm, it might not even matter.

It might have been meant to be that I scheduled my vacation days this fall for Redfish in SC instead of the rut.

There's the smell of death down by the creek in tick heaven, so I'm not going to investigate but counted 9 vultures overhead.

This warm and dry weather we are recently having is certainly not helping. It is going to be 07 all over again, I am afraid.
