Could use a lil help...Bay Fishing
Other than driving around PI I know very lil about it even though I am local I am more of a stream fisherman. Was wondering if the perch/crappie can be caught from shore-have waders willing to wade a lil. Have a friend visiting just looking for some good eating fish we did the steelhead thing yesterday. Anyone willing to spoon feed me some spots and tactics??? Private Message me if you want...THANKS WCW

Well .... The issue with catching perch in the bay right now isn't the issue, catching perch that have some size is. Pretty much anywhere you go, dobbins off the end, border patrol off the side wall, liberty marina off the rocks on the inlet side, PI marina of ends of about any dock, East Slip down by rum runners. Try with a crappie rig, or a slip bobber your more than likely going to catch some perch using emerald shiners. Try casting out, try straight down try right on bottom and try 6 inches to a foot off the bottom it will possibly allow you to target larger more dinner worthy fish. Crappie and perch are still up in the head of the bay but as of Saturday it was still iced over. My latest post here has some nice ones caught at Lib Park inlet side - http://www.eriereellove.wordpress.com

Nice story page Corey, I used to fish like that if it had fins I'm in, now worn out knees and all I just mainly fish from our boat. We launch mostly from Conneaut, Ohio and also had a tough year perching. Had to try different methods ,and the bite was hard to detect never had to do this before. We did pretty good but really worked for them.Hope this year the schools of perch aren't moving so fast ,or as spotty as the last couple years. Have a look at PCQueen walk on Charter boat web site and see the decline in the catch over the last 4-5 years. Makes me wonder ?

rmcmillan, I presume you use braid line for perching. When I switched to braid it made all the difference feeling bites. workcanwait, Can not help you with shore fishing perch. I have seen some nice catches off the South Wall at entrance to bay. Once saw guy catching jumbos at the mouth of Walnut off concrete that sticks out. He was trying for Steelhead and catching jumbo perch right on point between Creek and lake.

rmcmillen last year that offshore perch bite was nilch i agree. 2015 from mid July through September we caught over 1100 perch that were keepers as often as we could get out. Last year I dont think we boated over 200 the whole summer. I caught more of the edge of bay through fall than I did all summer long out there. I keep boat at walnut so I usually fish east to condos / lighthouse west to almost state line. I think I will get our Oh lic this year and venture out there. Walleye fishing was way down last year as well. The perch still havent finish spawn yet so they are still loaded up in the bay pretty good. Treesparrow, I have better feel with mono perching than I do braided on shore, but I think the rod has more to do with that than line does what lb and type braid you use? I use 6lb berkley iceline for winter bayfishing on shore, the ice buildup on line comes off mono easier than braid when its 20-30 degrees out, it works for the bay steelhead too.

The bays booming 3 trips 3 limits X2 with my buddy. Keepers to me 11"up. A lot of 1.25-1.50 lb fish with several 2 lb fish, one last trip was 4oz from the state record. Giant fish in the bay,key is finding the big one's. If your catching drinks it's time to pull up anchors. Yesterday 43 degrees air temps, 33 water, ice out to 12' at the head of the bay. A little more work because they where deep but we got the job done. If go have a boat the bay is easy to learn. There's a handful of spots that produce jumbo regular. Things to keep in mind, bobbers for fishing shallow, slip bobbers fishing deep, simply made your own perch spreaders,( go on YouTube) floating jig heads, small 1/64 leadheads, ice jigs, small plastics, maggots, waxies, and never be without emerald shiners never. People make fun of perch fishing till you eat a fried perch dinner. We caught and released the ever so hard to catch steelhead accidentally perch fishing,to me there just a big stupid trout. You can wade in the very shallow water by the cat tail island and get a mixed bag big gills, crappie and some decent perch although you may keep about 1 -10 perch there,it depends. A lot of locals keep 8-9 inch fish. To each his own,I don't. Erie full of fish and enough for everyone, you ask I'll tell. It's show time.

Well will say they call it fishing not catching...my buddy and made 3 trips to the bay. 2 hr drive for us. Feb...22 27. And march. 20. All with a south west wind under 10 mph.....water temp in mid 30s. We fished the head of the bay. From 12 feet. To 5.5. Feet of water.....we were lucky all 3 trips. We boated 60. Jumbo perch each trip. 30 each..... got into big gills on 2nd trip...was cast and crank with the gills...wish the docks were in ...but can't wait for that with the bite we got.....some. Fish in the 2lb range....no keepers under 10 ins.....also from time to time we hooked Steelhead...

Was out in the bay last night from about 5:30 to 8:15 or so, some chop and pretty **** cold. Found some shelter in Liberty Marina with many dinks ( thats under 9 inches to me) I agree with Big Tuna, unless its a chubby 9 not worth the time for me anymore, If I was fishing to eat it would be different and if I already didnt have 30 plus lbs in the freezer lol. Headed over to PI Marina lake and scoped some marks got on a few bottom bundles only 4 of size and they were released. Had to push out alot of ice at the chestnut launch with the boat. Water temp hovered around 36, it was about 37-38 in Presque Isle Marina. rmcmillen .... looking forward to it. Are you in Pa. or Ohio? Was checking out the head boats page.

Yellow Perch Dec. 1 through April 30 7" . May 1 through Nov. 30 None. Copied and pasted this out of the PA fishing regs for Lake Erie and tribs. For the newbies that might not know there's a size limit for yellow perch this time of year.

Maybe not 7's but there's a ton of 8" and 8.5" fish in the locals buckets off the city side piers. I really don't get it,there's a ton of jumbo perch in the bay. I travel 2 hours to fish and my 30 are going to be the biggest I can get, in 3 trips my limits where mostly fish over 10"- 15.5". First trip we did keep a few 9.5" fish but the last two trips they've been really big fish When you got a bucket of jumbo perch a 10" fish looks like a dink.lol The 7" limit comes off because when you do the deep water perch thing they just die anyway so some guys will ice them not to waste most guys let the gulls have dinner.

To bad you didn't get it weighed at a certified scale. The state record fish taped out at around 15 3/4". A 15 1/2" full of eggs could have been close.

Funny story when it comes to that state record perch. The day that was caught I found the perch at the 1st green shipping lane buoy outside of the channel. Started blastin em. I was the only boat there. Some other boats started showin up and they were catchin some but not like us. We ran out of minnows and didnt have our limit yet. Ran into east ave., grabbed more minnows and headed back. Someone was parked in my spot so I had to anchor 30-40 feet away. We caught some but they was blastin em. We watched them catch the state record that day. BH

The kid who caught it would anchor his boat right where you were after you went to get more minnows, he's a dbag.

4 of us messed around the head of the bay, tough fishing windy, and scattered fish few here, few there,a lot of short 50 yard moves,we fished shallow 7'-9' emeralds on 1/64 leadheads, pink, chartreuse, orange. Had one hot bite in late afternoon that was ridiculous,a ton of males today nice fish but 10" -11" fish, about 1/4 big females 12"14". Males where running milt. I don't keep secrets,Erie's big, tons of fish for everyone,I wanted to put in at Chestnut and fish Liberty today in 22 fow but short anchor rope and no 1 oz stinkers prevented that.My buddy smoked big females there today. We end up with 104 keepers and we don't keep drinks. 10"-14" are keepers. Pike are hitting well we landed 3,had 2others eat the jig, lost 2 something big probably steel, and I caught a 5 lb small mouth on a 9' noodle rod, that was fun. Till my next adventure,BT
