FYI: The PA fish commision has not stocked any steelhead in 16 or 20 mile for a few years now. That is why there is NO FISH anymore. Everyone who has fished these streams in past should submit a complaint on the fish commissions website. They ruined this fishery and didn't even put up a sign so people dont waste there time chasing nothing...

Doood... ive personally seeen tons of smolts in 20 this march sooo not sure where your getting your info.. try hitting the cricks in march if you wana see smolts with your own eyes.

Agreed. I am looking right now at a photo of a cloud of smolts on 20 Mile that I took with my phone this March.

I took a few Taco Bell dukes on the banks of those streams recently. That may have something to do with the low numbers. Also, I think I tried skein, on a double dog dare, at or about the time the dukes took place...but you'd think that would increase the numbers. I dunno.

Lol, you will learn to hate smolts and you cant miss them spring time. Anything they can fit into their mouth they take. Its no wonder they grow so fast to survivable sizes the first year. That's why i shake my head when people rope 15-20 inch jacks.
Those fish are actually the future. They are more than likely (according to studies) first year fish just following the packs. They grow up to 17 "inches the first summer and really aren't supposed to return for 2-3 years.
If you catch a 15" fish in the tribs that is "2-3 years old" we have got some serious issues. Its just not correct a 2-3 year old fish is 24-27 inches (about your average returned fish)
Think of that next time you see a sub 20" fish roped. (Alot of them this year)

Dukes shouldn't do anything to the numbers, after all ya got 16 mile fish living just downstream from that sewage treatment plant.

Glad you found my video helpful, that fly hasn't worked quite as well this year unfortunately, but I actually caught a fish that had one of those in it's tail yesteday, not sure if it was mine or not..

Maybe the predator fish are more prominant out east when the smolts return? Any input from you diehard walleye fishermen ?

I'm not an eye angler but they are common bycatch for us. One thing I can say is that the average size of Walleye for us this year started out well above average and steadily decreased all year. Perhaps it's because they were gorging on smolts all spring and then progressively lost them as a food source? For example, the two we caught this spring trolling for Lakers were 11 pounds and 14-15 pounds. We found a dozen or so hitchhiking on our steelhead presentations over the course of the summer but the biggest one was only 9-10 pounds with a few 5-8 pounders and a lot of 3 pound or less fish (including an 8", yes eight inch, Walleye).

Off topic but I watched a show earlier on the great lakes, it was about the invasive mussels and the toxic algae. They said the Great Lakes are going to have to relearn the new eco system caused by the algae. Its not a complete devastation and isn't predicted to be. A set back and challenge for current animals to adapt to. they were also researching what could of been a very large meteor strike near the st lawerence river mouth of lake ontario.

Was at 16 mile this spring when they were shooting the smolts out the black pipe from the truck. 16 mile is not getting the fish as it used to in the past because the mouth is a mess. lower portion needs to be cleaned out bad, used to have a nice deep channel, now its a mud island with reeds starting to grow. Steelhead don't like sand and silt and that's all the lower section has become. Yes some do blow through it when its higher but don't get the run in on normal or low flows anymore.
20 mile is still getting fish, but do to the high gradient and fast water they don't stick around long. and has a poaching issue.  They climb that in a day or 2 and up into NY they go.

Fishing is one jerk waiting for another on the other end.
