prices of new rod and reel

i just got my 2008 salmon and steelhead catalog from cabelas. okuma has a reel for $299.99, 2 pages later g-loomis has a centerpin rod for $540. that comes to $839.99 + $16.95 s/h for a grand total of $856.94. for one fishing rod n reel seems kinda expensive. what are the advantages of this style as oppossed to fly rod or spinning? i know that some spinning and flyrods can get just as expensive as well.

the early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

you can get a hole lot cheaper setup off of FishUSA.com, or score a decent used setup off of ebay, i'd never pay that much for my first centerpin

You could have a better custom stick built for less than $540.  I'd go with Fish USA or the used route for my first set-up.

I have a whole rig for sale that is perfect for the Erie tribs.  It is a Islander Steelheader, Raven IM6 13'6" 3pc. and a bunch of random floats, hooks, spawn mesh and an extra spool of Siglon.  I'm asking $450 for the whole deal.  E-mail me @ steelheader01@comcast.net if you're interested...

Trout about is 100% right.  If you are going to spend over 200$ on any rod you need to go custom.  A rod just a good or better than that Loomis can be built by a custom builder for half the price.  You are paying for that G.Loomis label attached to the side of the rod and in all honesty Loomis is surviving on the legacy of they're name.  They're are many other blanks just as good for less cost.  Contact a custom builder and look into a rod made on a Raven blank.  You'll never pick up a Loomis again.

...this might sound stupid...but how can you get a custom rod built for yourself if you don't even know what you prefer or even know how to use a pin setup yet...or even know which reel you are going to use?

i'd say get out with someone who has one for the day and use theirs for a whole day... then go from there. if you don't know anyone who uses one, i am sure that someone on this board (including myself) would be more than happy to spend a day with you on the tribs and lend out their rod for the day.

Here! Here!  Instead of turning yet another thread into a woulda shoulda coulda, pay for the name, get a custom built Blah Blah Blah, an actual piece of good sound advice. Makes sense to me. Good post!
I fished with a good friend for 2 years ocasionally using his pin before actually deciding what to buy. What works for some, may not work for others. Buy what you feel YOU will be comfortable with, not what everybody else tells you to buy.

Not too sure about lending it out for the whole day,but willing to let you get the hang of it and land a few fish, that should only take a few minutes. If your making a trip to Erie any time soon.post when and i'll try to hook you up with a lesson on how to become dangerous to the fish population.

Mxdad66 when do ya want to hook up a few on the pin. I am free during the days, my best days are Mondays!  Tuesdays are okay the rest of the week usually is not good kids, and work. So if you wanna do a Monday gave me a day or two notice I'll be more than happy to meet ya and fish with for a day. Loomis i am still waiting for you to stop in at the Coney say hi, hell you are in the same area as me, i have a rod and reel you could use if you was wanting to learn or try the game. It's addictive you might get a pin after you try it. Ever since i gave up mine six years ago, only time i fly fish is back home. For steel i wouldn't be without my float stick.  We all should get a centerpin club together do a day or two through the year like the fly clubs on the forum do it would be fun. That would be awesome seeing every one with a pin hitting the tribs!
