I have an AllStar 11' steelhead blank (model IGSH1322-2) that I could part with for a reasonable price.

    Hi Scott, Skip,

I have two of those talon 11'9" blanks here that I'm looking to part with.  They rate as a 7 wt fly blank or a 2-8 lb spinning blank.  I don't think I'd use them as a centerpin rod since they are a little light in the middle, but I have one of my own built as a switch rod and it is sweet.  You can roll cast 50+' and spey cast a full line with the right line on it.  I also fish mine as an indicator rod for big trout water here.  It would be perfect for Erie.

I also have a 14' 8 wt spey rod blank with a grip installed if you're interested.  Would be a good way to build a first spey rod inexpensively.

I can do pictures if you want them.

    Thanks,
    Rick

    jon,

3 pc, matte grey.  Very light in weight, I think it only weighs 2.1 oz for an 11'9" 7 wt.

    Thanks,

Thanks anyway casts, I dont need a 3 peice, I was thinking about building one into a single egg rod, but I think that blank will be a little to heavy. Do you know if loomis still makes those 11'9" ultralight  blanks? If not do you know of any similar blanks? I'd like a 11'6" to 12' or so ultralight for singles.By the way, you ready for spring bird season?

    john,

No birds for me this season.  My weekends are booked from now until the middle of June.  The wedding is at the end of may and I've got a lot of traveling before and after.  I haven't even bought my NY fishing license yet.

Don't worry about it being a 3 pc.  It is lighter than most any of the 2 pc rods I've found anywhere, especially at nearly 12'.  I think you'd be surprised how light these blanks are.  They have a light enough tip and middle for single eggs on a tiny foam float, but I'd have no problems fishing them at trout run in the lake with the same setup.

There aren't many blanks in the 11'6" - 12' range that are light.  The St Croix is really heavy as a float rod.  The loomis canada blanks are going to be too heavy also.  Loomis US offers the 11'6" IGFA 4 lb GL2 blank.  It is an ultralight in power, but to be honest the Talon is just as light in physical weight with more power down low.  You might want to check talon's website for other blanks in that range.  I know they offer a lot.  If you want to go high end, you can order a custom CTS blanks from Andy Dear in Texas in whatever length/weight/power/color you want.

    Thanks,
    Rick

    Rick,

a bit off topic, but you mentioned CTS.  I'm building a CTS Elite EBT843 as a tube rod for a guy right now.  It's a tremendous blank.  It makes me want to sell all the St. Croix's I have and not build the Legend Elite I have on the back-burner.  I should have got one for myself at the show in High Point.

Thanks again casts Your always helpfull, I'm gonna check out cts, but I'm in no big hurry to get a single  egg rod, Don't really need one till next year. Anyway one more question, I'm gonna be working at the niagra falls powerplant soon  and I'll be there for about 3 weeks. Do you know of any trout fishing that will be happening then, And are there any salmon left or are they already gone for the year?

A boat helps but is not necessary.  I have seen many fish from shore, but it looks like it may be a rough walk down.

    Rick or Scott,
I am planning to have a 10 foot noodle rod built. I want to have it break down into 4 sections. I have not been able to find one that breaks down like that.
Do you have any suggestions concerning the blank, guides, seat, grip, butt etc.
I was going to use a st. croix blank, just to be safe.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I value your opinions as you have made fly rods that are top notch.
Thank you and good luck with your near plans.

you could probably use a 10' 5 wt 4 pc fly blank with a moderate action.  That would put you in the right range.  Depending on the power you want a lighter weight blank might be in order.  Schneider's rod shop in Arkansas has their white river series of fly blanks.  10' 1-4 wt (4 different models).  don't know how many pieces.  Most companies have 10' 5 wt 4 pc rods now.

Go as light as you can afford on guides.  Titanium SiC Fuji are premium and worth it if you can swing it.  Amtak Titans might be worth a try, but I don't know them.

Everything else is up to you.  If it were my rod I'd use Fuji SiC with the concept guide system to keep it light in the tip, and I'd probably go with a ~16" slip rings grip with a heavy but cap.  The heavier butt cap will help balance and the grip will allow you to balance with the reel's position.  Would also let you throw a fly reel on it if you wanted.

    Thanks,
    Rick

    Rick,
Why did you say a 5 wt. blank? I was thinking of something heavier for steelhead and salmon. Maybe @ 8 wt.
Thanks for info on the guides and grip/butt.
    Your help is noted.

well, you said noodle rod for one.  When I hear noodle rod I think St Croix 10'6" and similar 2-6 or 4-8 lb light power, slower action spinning rods.  The Wild river 2-6 lb blank would rate right around a 3/4 wt fly rod based on the power.

Also, the power of a fly rod on fighting fish is partly negated by using fly line as opposed to monofilament.  While I wouldn't use a 4 wt for steelhead, that same blank built as a spinning rod has more apparent power because of less water resistance on the line.

An 8 wt blank makes for a hefty spinning rod.  I have a 9' 8 wt blank that was once a fly rod.  I used it for a time for steelhead and it wasn't bad.  It has a moderate action, decent recovery, all in all pretty similar to the 9' 8 wt St Croix Imperial that was out a few years ago.  It was one of my early builds and had cheap components.  So I tore it down and built a spinning and centerpin rod out of it.  It is about a 6-10 lb line and 1/8 - 1/2 oz lure spinning rod.  I have used it to throw 1/2 oz bucktails in the surf.  It wouldn't be my first choice as an erie steelhead rod as it has too much power to fish 6 lb line all day.  Though, if I were fishing the salmon river for steelhead and salmon, then it would be a great choice.

It comes down to the blank and what you want to do with it, but if you want it for lake Erie steelhead, I'd start looking around a 5 wt and go from there based on your preferences.

    Thanks,
    Rick

I just found this guy for building supplies.  He had been selling local only but just went online.
http://www.rodtrader.net, there's a place to buy and sell custom rods also.

CTS blanks are awesome.  I just felt one the other day.  I'm going to get one to make a smallie rod with for fishing tubes.

What color is the blank?  I'm looking at getting that blue color.  Something different than the standard graphite grey or green.

It's Charcoal.  We (my customer and I) wanted something different too.  The CTS cobalt is a nice color, but I think it looks too much like the St. Croix Tournament Bass rods.
