Alaska - Kanektok River
Just got back from our unguided float trip down the Kanektok River in western Alaska. Unbelievable trip, rafted 100 miles over 10 days down to the village of Quinhagak. Absurd numbers of grizzlies, rainbows, and silvers. If I were to say we had 7 days of 70 degrees and nothing but sunshine in September in Alaska, you would call me crazy. The warm weather sure made for a more relaxed trip, not worrying about keeping the few pairs of clothes and sleeping gear dry. Last few days brought hard rains which pushed a heavy pod of silvers upriver. I've fished upstate NY for years and am used to a steady push of kings upriver, but nothing prepared me for the amount of silvers that one by one made their way into the various sloughs.
We floated the Arolik 2 years ago, both spectacular rivers, the Kanektok has a little more pressure because you are allowed to guide on t hat river, but I would say I will be doing the Kanektok again.
Now back in time to chase some chrome! Going to be odd fishing in civilization again thats for sure!
