Trolling Creek Mouths for Steelies

Can someone give me the rundown on how to go about trolling the mouths of creeks for steelhead? What type of lures/plugs? How many feet back? flat lines? How many feet of water? How close to shore should I get? I've tried it last week and was constantly snagging bottom and lost 2 smaller reef runners. Was in front of Trout run trolling back an forth at 2.8mph.
 
Any pointers will help

    Well, you've got the tips I gave you but other than that just try to keep your lines high, some of those fish will be right at the surface or willing to hit shallow lures. If I'm trolling in 10' then my deepest lure would be at 5', trolling in 15' deepest lure at 8-10', etc.

    As close as you can get to the guys wading, just out of Little Cleo casting range.

    Make sure you have 30-50# braid on your outside planer line (the one closest to shore) so you win the ensuing battle of snagged lines with the guys casting from shore!

    Think he'd be better off using 45# wire, that'll slice right through those mono lines!
