Fly fishing question t

I typically only break my pole out for salmon fishing once a year and the occasional erie trip . But I live in Edinboro now a days so I have a lot more interest in taking it for walks in erie . Now here's my question. . How can I attach light leaders to flyline without having to taper heavy line to light via blood knots . The times iv taken my fly rod to erie never last to long Cuz frustration sets in when my leader snaps on a loop to loop connection . Would there be less of a breaking point at the loop if I tightened down a slip knot rather than a loop to loop ? I hope this makes sense . My dads taught me several things over the years but at times I find it might have a different name to some one else lol thanks in advance

Are you talking for steelhead?  Because if you are I never bother with various sizes of tapering leaders then to a tippet.  I attach one of those braided loops onto my fly line with the heat shrink tube that comes with it, then depending upon water conditions I tie regular 8 or 6 pound test line (Seagur fluorocarbon) to the loop.  Then tie on my fly at the terminal end.  At times, I'll go with a section of 8 lb fluoro, attach a small barrel swivel, then attach a 6 lb section of fluoro, then my fly.  This works just fine for roll casting in the tribs and I've never had any problems.  It's not like you're out there casting and trying to present a dry fly.

I normally just loop my main line then tie on 6 pound fluoro to the loop with a clinch knot.

Furled leaders and tiny Blackbird swivels are the method to my madness.

I user a 6 inch section of 25lb amnesia line from my fly line using two loop 2 loop connections. From there I put about a 4-5 foot section of 12 to 10LB Mono or fluro leader.

Off of that leader, using a double surgical knot (think that's what its called) I can attach my fluro line as tippet to my fly and then add tandem if needed. Try placing indicator on the main leader in case I do break off, it doesn't get lost as well.

Nail Knot for leader to fly line connection, and surgeons knot for tippet to leader connection.

fishmonger, I like those furled leaders, get 'em on ebay.  I'll use either a 3 ft or 5 ft furled clear or light green fluorocarbon leader that comes with a tiny tippet ring attached that I tie my terminal section of line to.

I have been making furled leaders for years. Got the method off the internet of course. We have a jig and use UniThread or very fine monofilament. We figure that they are costing us around a quarter to produce one. I get the Blackbird swivels from FishUSA. The ones we make for dry fly fishing are really nice.

Your problem is the knot at the connection of the fly line and mono leader.  If its a nail knot, perfection loop, surgeons loops, etc. and it's breaking before the 4# test breaks you have a major problem with that knot.  A properly tied nail knot, perfection loop, or surgeons loop will never break before the 4# test.
