Welp, headed up and absolutely smashed them yesterday, 10 for 12 on emerald shiner streamers, crystal meth, and black and blue stonefly nymphs. Had a good one on, easily over 12 pounds, when the bloody alarm went off, and I had to go to work.

I hope all the non-members read that whole last sentence LOL.

You only hooked 12??  Sounds slow for the 2nd week of September. I Guess it's another down year coming.

Yes its them darn snaggerz ropin and smokin em all before they get up to the stop sign hole.

Why, back in my day, we could walk into elk, with maybe 2 or three guys visible in a 1000 yard stretch, and there were so many fish as far as the eye could see, you could snag one by jis droppin your bait in the water next to you.

Now that I'm up on the terminology, I'm heading up in the morning. I know it's to early, no rain, 80 degrees, and probably a waste of time but I can wait no longer ! I'll let yinz know why I caught none when I get back.

It's only a matter of time now, always depends on rainfall, water in the creeks, water temperature, and other factors. This season has been rough so far with the lack of rain and warmer than average temps, but appears to be cooling off later in the week, Im headed up next weekend regardless, the itch is just getting to be too much to handle, surely there will be at least some fish by then, even if I gotta strip some buggers down by the mouths. Im willing to bet bigger runs will come in October, however. Further, it's been my experience that there are a very, very small percentage of people who are very tight lipped, or will even understate the number of fish in the creeks in an effort to discourage people from coming, sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and go.

I only got 1 excuse. No fish!!! I went to 20 mi. walked from the parking lot to the lake and didn't see 1 fish. 16 mi falls to mouth same thing. went to the nut, nothing in the projects ,did see a couple surface along the wall but no action, maybe a dozen anglers there. went to elk saw about 8 or 10 in a group roaming the lower part of the stone wall, got 1 to bite but missed it. 2 steelies and maybe 25, 10 to 12 inchers is all that are in trout run creek. I've never seen so few fish at anytime after labor day.If I read this from someone else I wouldn't believe it, trust me somethings wrong.

I was sitting on a plane when I read that and now everyone is wondering why I'm laughing so hard. Please don't do that again.

I live with fear every day, and sometimes she lets me go fishing.

It will cool down. Steelhead will come. Rain will come. More steelhead will come. It will become October then November. More steelhead will come. People will complain. More steelhead will come. They stock eleventy million a year. They will come. If not, I blame Obama.

Re: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Erie Steelhead Fishing Jargon 2015/09/18 08:41:12 (permalink)
Every september-early october, I hear at least one person say:

- "There are no fish"
- "Ive never seen so few fish in (stream name here)"
- "I've never seen (stream name here) this low"

Not panic mode yet, this seems to be the last day of the indian summer (apologies to the PC police), at least for now, and things will be cooling off, so shouldnt be too long now. This weekend, last year, was one of my best trips of the season, yet there was an early run due to last year's summer being cool, and with multiple days in September where the temperature didnt get out of the 50s. We havent had that luxury this year, so things are a tad late.

That said, making first trip next weekend, I'm positive it will be worth it. Great drive up from central PA through the northwestern pa mountains and forests seeing the leaves change, great to get away from it all at work and home for a few days, surely will be able to find some fish somewhere by then. If not, will go drown my sorrows at Avoina and Doc Hollidays.
