A first for me.
Sunday was the first time I got out this year, I spend the day with my gf at Mammoth and Twin Lakes. The "first for me" came when we went to Twin Lakes and we both ended up catching 2 colorful Brook Trout call me crazy, but I never new the commission had ever stocked the lake with Brookies. They both were about 8" so they weren't wild I would assume, but I didn't think that the lake habitat and summer temps would be suitable for them. Also, can anyone explain to me why the stocked Rainbows in Twin Lakes are smaller then those from Mammoth? I caught 3 rainbows at Mammoth ranging from 10-12" and 3 at Twin Lakes which were sub 10" and one silvery brown.

Could be that the bigger ones are harder to catch at Twin? btw both lakes at Twin have water depths over 20 ft. & have some natural springs. Every year we catch tagged trout that were stocked 2-4 yrs earlier. So I would say that some trout make it through the summer fine. sam

They have been stocking brookies out there for the past few years. They usually stay close to shore which makes them fairly easy to catch, most probably won't make it past the first week of the season.

I've noticed that about lake stocked brooks as well. They're usually very close to shore and easy to spot in clear water. 3 fish from each lake is hardly enough to say there's no big fish in twin. They're probably coming from the same hatcheries except for maybe the fish the tlfa puts in.

I may just be crazy lol, but that was just weird catching Brooks when I always thought the state stocked Rainbows and Browns, never knew they dumped any Brooks in. I do know the lake is 25' or so at max and stockers survive the summer, but I always was told Brooks are the least tolerable to the temps and lack of O2 which I could have been steered in the wrong direction all along.

I took a brookie from Upper Twin maybe 5 years ago. Shallow water, close to shore, just like others have said. I too thought it was rather odd, but if there's springs on the bottom, it's not crazy to think that they might have a shot at survival (if they get past the anglers, that is...). Then again, based on some of the places the PFBC dumps trout, that's not a super high concern, especially with the pressure Twin gets.

Ya we got the 2 on the bottom lake from breast of the dam close to shore. I just found it odd. I'm sure there are instances of survival if they can elude the masses and they go deep. I just was shocked because I was always told and under the impression that the state stocked rainbows and browns.

Here is the state stocking list, there is no mention of brooks being stocked at either of the lakes, Am I missing something? Ed, I was there & caught bows ,browns, brooks & a palomino that even. They almost always stock some Brooks for first day as they are generaly easier to catch. I know that they put brooks in each of the cnty lakes in the past couple of weeks,I was there.Last year even tho they advertised that they were putting bows in for the fall stocking ,they put almost all browns in these lakes. I do know that it is not written in stone what they are going to stock. If it is that important to someone I think that they should call the Somerset office & get a reliable answer. I do think that the scheduling & availability of each specie is what they go by. BTW when they stocked Twin this last time those of us that were there helping were impressed by the average size of the Trout. A lot of them were too big too go into the tube & had to be put in by nets. I have caught a bunch of very nice Brooks along with some average ones. The smallest bows that I caught were at Keystone, altho we also caught some nice ones there also. ps the crappie & large mouths were hitting pretty well this week when you could find them. Don't forget to pick up some trash this week-end if you go out,& be considerate to each other. sam

I'm glad they don't stock just bows, it's nice to get a variety and good to hear there are some larger ones in the mix this year. I was at Northmoreland last night, fished for about a hour and caught 13 bows, no browns or brookies though. I also picked up numerous trash items, empty lure packs, water bottles, plastic bags, bait containers. It's a shame this much trash makes it on the ground, because Northmoreland has plenty of garbage cans around the shoreline to prevent this.

Mags; The commission trys stocks what they say for the most part & they try to keep brooks up north of rt80 if they can. But they put them here and there as needed. I've seen them stock them in Bradys Run lake & Creek and also in Herdford Mannor before they shut it down and it was never published that they did. If they have an excess of one species they will put them in. Plus it is a put and take fishery, most of the fish are caught a killed by anglers evently or by herons, racoons, now eagles. etc.. a very few survive all year at least in the streams. And yes you are correct. Brooks are the least tolerant to temperature, it's in their Char DNA...LOL It's kinda funny, our state fish the brook "trout" isn't even a trout, it's a char..... In fact the only 2 native salmonids in our state; the Lake Trout & Brook Trout are not trout.

Haha, I was just shocked for the most part... I just never saw the state say "Hey we put Brooks in" on their reports granted like you said they probably had to put them somewhere or just wanted to even out the # or something...
