Tandem Rigs

I've been playing around with dif. set-ups and i'm torn in which one works best. I usually just tie my bottom fly on the hook bend and it seems pretty productive on both top and bottom flies. but when i tie my dropper in the eyelet of my first fly it seems i can never get a good hookset with my top fly......tips, suggestions, opinions?

If it's not broke I wouldn't try fixing it.  I and many others do it the same way you are.

I typically tie my dropper on the tag of the Palomar knot that my top fly is tied on with. I haven't noticed any issues like you have, and its a lot faster to rig it my way. Are we talking tiny wild trout here, or just in general?

I am a fan of the dropper loop for a lot of fishing uses. For tandems, if not for line shy fish, it is nice to easily change out offerings, keeping as a loop and threading through and over. For line shy fish, cut the loop at one end and tie on. They are good for keeping the top fly away from the line. I use more for throwing teasers in front of plugs, with heavier line and not so line shy fish. Also good for drop shotting and making your own perch/crappie spreader rigs. Make sure you wet your knots, but I guess that could be said of all knots.

also anything other then having my fly tied to the hook shank always gets tangled more often than not for me... could this be shot placement causing this, haha,  or just lazy casting? I usually (90%) fish moving water, trout streams, wild and stocked

Are you putting shot after your top fly? I don't. And I have no input on this pertaining to small wild trout.

Your doing it right by tying on bend. Works for me.
